New Legal Sets

After Platinum comes out it's my understanding that some sets will be cycling out of legality for tournament play. What sets will be leaving and staying?
Thanks for your help.

That sucks. I was looking forward to not seeing rare candy and claydol. =P Do they always cycle after worlds?

Yeah, they always cycle after worlds. And I hate to say it, but rare candy will pretty much never be rotated out. It was reprinted in POP8, which, odds are will not be rotated out, which will still make it legal.

So wait, did things get cycled last year? I'm not that worried about Rare Candy, I mostly wanted Claydol gone. I don't wanna spend that much money for a staple. Also, I was told by Keith at a tournament I went to yesterday that they were rotating when platinum's first set came out.

Keith was wrong. September starts the new Modified Format by rotating out 3 or 4 sets.

If it makes you feel any better, Claydol will still be going out in September.

Is it clear / defined at this point how many sets will be taken out ? ... if not why is the assumption that they will take out 3 or 4 sets ? why not 1 or 2 ? .. ( don't know any history on this ... so just want to better understand and get prepared )

What if we follow the Japanese format? Still a possibility. Why can't we just stop guessing when we can't be sure anyway?

This wins the thread...

September 1st is a long way out. Let's focus on what we can play, not what might get rotated out.

Personally, I like the idea of running DP/On for another year, like the Japanese have.

Wait, is it already 100% confirmed that Japan will keep on going with DP-On? Didn't hear anything about that.

Expect to see some kind of staple card/s every season that you are going to have to pay that much money for.

This year, it is Uxie/lv.X and Claydol.
Last year, it was Claydol.
The year before, it was Holon's Castform HP.
The year before that, it was the Holon Engine (a set of Holon Trainers/Supporters) and Holon's Castform HP.
The year before that, it was Pidgeot FRLG.

Get my drift?

Buy Uxie now before they go up next season. Be a smart buyer now so you save some money next season.

The assumption that 3 or 4 sets will be rotated out is based on the fact that 4 sets are released each year. If 4 come out and 4 go away, the pool of cards stays somewhat consistent. There have been variations on the numbers of sets rotated out, but the average is 4, and most years the actual number is 4.

I actually think that the Holon Engine was for both of the years that you put Holon's Castform in. I will say that out of all these engines that the Holon Engine while maybe the most expensive was definitely the best and most healthiest for the game as it allowed decks that weren't so great to work or helped decks that wouldn't have worked, work.

I definitely agree with this. It was the most versatile trainer engine ever. And the problem with basing a deck around pokemon is that they are not as versatile (for the most part). I felt I got the most out of that format, because I could build any random deck and the type of pokemon I built didn't matter as much.
So if one wanted to have a deck with their favorite pokemon, one could.

Congradulations, I got 2nd at a CC with a deck I made at 2 am the previous night.

=/

Seriously, winning a CC doesn't mean you automatically get to throw silly and CLEARLY untested quotes out there, odds are you will end up just making yourself look foolish (...too late).

I don't agree, because that only really held true if your favourite pokemon had "d" after its name.

I'd argue that the Pidgeot format was healthier in that regard. Lots of rogues in that format.

Uh, last I checked, Claydol was still being played in more than half the decks out there...

But yeah, unless something better comes along in the next 2 sets, buy up some Uxie LA (which are already at Claydol prices).

The Holon engine was in EVERY tournoment worthy deck in the ENTIRE FORMAT. And it was harder to get than just buying 1-2 cards. Its alot easier to have Claydol than it was the entire Engine.
