I bought the starter set for my son last year because he liked Pokemon and enjoyed looking at the cards. He wasn't really ready to play the actual game though.
This morning, he really wanted to play the game, and I think he is ready to learn the basics (8 years old now). Unfortunately, we can't find the rules for the basic game and the 30-card deck. I found a list of the cards that are in the starter set, but I don't know how to divide them into two decks.
I would really appreciate some help to find the starter rules, especially on how to put together the decks from the starter decks. Then maybe we can figure out how to enjoy this game that you all seem to like so much.
BTW, I did search the forums and poked around the wizards.com site and found some info on basic gameplay. I really just need to understand how to create the basic decks with the cards that come with the starter set.
Thanks!

Here we go...
- 1st Deck 14 Fire energy (red, flame symbol) 4 Ponyta 4 Charmander 2 Charmeleon 1 Growlithe 1 Bill 1 Gust of Wind 2 Switch 1 Energy Ret
- 2nd Deck 14 Fighting energy (brown, fist symbol) 3 Diglett 4 Machop 2 Machoke 2 Rattata 1 Dratini 2 Potion 1 Energy Removal 1 Pokédex
And the extra card is Machamp.
For rules on how to play the game, you can check the Wizards Pokemon site.
The only difference between the Starter level rules and the Advanced-Expert level rules is that for the Starter level game, you draw 3 prizes instead of 6. The Starter rules also left out that you have to flip over your Benched pokemon after you flip over your Active pokemon, when you start the game.

Wow! Thanks for the quick response. My son is sorting out the cards and I've got a printout of the online rulebook from wizards.com in hand. We're off to try our first game of Pokemon TCG!
Thanks again.

No problem! Glad to be of service to the parent of a fledgling trainer.
When he learns the basic steps to playing the game, he can remove his least favorite card from one of the two decks, put in his Machamp card, then shuffle the decks together into one 60-card deck for use in Advanced level play.
You'll have to purchase another 60-card deck to be able to play against him for practice, though, but you can also start looking for a BattleZone session running in your area so that he can practice against several different Advanced level players.
You'll know when he can move up to the Advanced level when he knows the steps of gameplay like the back of his hand. Once he's gotten pretty good at playing with a 60-card deck, he can try figuring out how to incorporate cards from individual booster packs into his deck, that's the Expert level.
