Greetings all,
I - like nearly everyone else in the Pokémon community at this time, I'd imagine - have been looking for a way to boost my interest back up to what it once was regarding Pokémon. I'm not ashamed to say that I had for a while been experimenting with Yu-Gi-Oh, but in the end I found it too random and luck oriented to be a steady competitive game. But one thing stuck with me from Yu-Gi-Oh (which I now play casually)...
...the idea of playing cards facedown in an attempt to gall an opponent into attacking is an appetizing one, am I correct? And imagine if that same type of mind trickery could be harnessed for our game...Well, who's to say it can't?
This is a deck idea I've been toying with for a long while, and I think that now it has just enough of the surprise element on its side to help it work all the better. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the Mind Bender.
Mind Bender 1 Nightly Garbage Run 2 Scoop Up 3 Pokemon Center 2 Chaos Gym 3 Blaine's Quiz #3 4 Berry 3 Professor Elm 4 Lt. Surge's Secret Plan 4 Item Finder 4 Computer Search 3 Professor Oak 4 Metal Energy 10 Psychic Energy 1 Mewtwo L60 2 Erika's Dratini 1 Unown B 1 Unown Y 1 Unown X 3 Cleffa 4 Mr. Mime
Yes, I know how weird it looks. But let's examine, hmm?
First, we'll get to WHY the deck could be so annoying in theory. To do this, we'll need to get some rulings on Lt. Surge's Secret Plan, the main staple of this deck.
According to the Pokémon TCG Rules Compendium(unless it's been changed in some way), the following is true about a card put facedown by Lt. Surge's Secret Plan: -Anything that needs to know the specifics about a card flipped facedown forces the card face-up (Attacks, trainers such as Blaine, etc). -When attacking a card that is facedown, the attack is announced first, then the card is flipped. -Such things as attaching energy and/or Pokemon Tools do not force the card to be flipped faceup. -Gust of Wind and/or promoting to active status do not force the card to be flipped.
Keeping all of that in mind, let's see what this deck is capable of. Heavy hitters are going to have a cow when Mime is revealed to have blocked all but 20 damage from their attack, and is healing with a Berry/Scooped up next turn. At the same time, Erika's Dratini makes heavy hitting basics cry, and Unown/Blaine's Quiz #3 is enough to drive anyone insane. Sure, the attack is "Hidden Power"...now which Unown is it?
Put it all together and you've got one heck of a fun deck to play. I can't wait to get this sucker together so I can start annoying the heck out of people...comments? Critiques? Suggestions? All are welcome. Thanks!

All i can say is that it is extremely weak to pichu. But it looks, to say the least, intruiging.

A very interesting concept indeed! I don't like the Metal energies because they don't help E Dratini or Mr Mime. A Recycle energy can be placed face down and when it is attacked you may discard it (back to your hand) and push up the best wall against that attack. I think Clefairy Doll and Mysterious Fossil can be used to absorb the attack (they are treated as Basic Pokemon while in play)without loss of a prize and you can push up a Smeargle with DCE for real punishment.
The charade will end quickly if your opponent has a Pokemon which causes you to check the status of your bench, such as SI Mew (check type) or Pichu (check PP). CFK has already mentioned the havoc a Pichu will wreak on all the Pokemon with PP's in this deck.
Finally, those Chaos Gyms will probably cause you more grief than relief. Perhaps Healing Fields can slow down your use of Pokemon Centers and Scoops to keep E Dratini and Mr Mime alive a little longer.

Love the idea, but where you say attatching a Pokemon tool or energy card, if you mean attatch it to the face down "Pokemon" I think it would be flipped over, because of cards like the non-holo Raikou, Entei, and Suicune, and other cards like Eevee (either one with a power). My assumption is that whenever a player does something that any basic Pokemon can react to would cause the card to be flipped over, but that's just my guess.
I really like the idea, and in casual play, it would be one of the ultimate fun decks to play. Problem is, where's the Blue Eyes and Dark Magician?

Another addition to the Blaine's Quiz #3 torture chamber is any (W) Pokemon that knows Water Gun. Think - how many cards know Water Gun? Why let them be so sure it's an Unown, why not confuse them even more?

Yep, attaching Tools and Energy Cards would cause a flip of the card. Also, to correct your Mr. Mime statement: If an attack is blocked, it is totally blocked.
I agree that the Metal does not help you much. Better to spend the slots on something else. With all of the Trainers that you are playing, Chaos Gyms are not the way to go. Another card that would be frustrating for your opponent would be "Sleep! Sleep!".
