Why does TPC(or WOTC or whatever) ban whole sets? Why can't they just ban a few cards from the set, instead of the whole frigging set? 'Tis messed up, if you ask me.

The Japanese do something like that. I think it's too complicated to micromanage like that. Bans should be kept to a minumum, as LC-type sets acheive your objective much more readily. [ January 12, 2003, 06:56 AM: Message edited by: yoshi1001 ]

Okay, now for an actual answer.
The reason why whole sets are "banned" as you so put it, is because older sets eventually go out of print. And once out of print (like Base-Challenge), they become harder to find for the newer players. So what do they do? They rotate the older sets out of the Modified format and then Legendary Collection was released to increase the card pool in Modified, and give newer players an easier way to find those older cards. (With the exception of the 2 Gym Sets as TPC recognizes the Gym series as a separate game and doesn't allow WOTC to reprint cards from those 2 sets)
So basically, cards go out of print, newer players can't find them, so since they are at a disadvantage they just ban all the old sets and reprint the ones they feel suitable for the format in a new set.
Hope that helps. =\

Besides affecting the newer players, this method keeps the older players buying more and more cards to keep their decks updated. Thus, with a few bans, WoTC makes more money. It's all business.

Except for those of us who don't have the money to buy all these new cards. That's what I hate about it, once they get rid of LC and before, I won't be playing, nor will my son, since that's all we have. I see a lot of players playing more yugioh and Magi nation than Pokemon, and a lot of them are fed up with the same thing. It's all about money.

It's all about money.
Why does everyone see this as a bad thing? Mind you, Wizards/Hasbro is a BUSINESS who sole purpose is to make MONEY by SELLING products. It IS about the money, but there's nothing wrong with that.
Modified is only around to give new players an equal advantage in terms of the cards avaliable. Unlimited still exists for a lot of us old timers.

Soslowpoke remember that certain trainers cards from the Gyms have been reprinted that are useful for the overall game (Master Ball and Warp Point). I just don't want to confuse anyone on that point.
Unlimited is a special (but rather predicatable) format for players these days. Because we all know out of all of the avalable cards which certain cards rock and which stink. The reason I say predicatable is because when I went to the Professor/Wizards Challenge at Worlds, I think almost all of the decks had at least one Sneasel in it.
Modified I think is meant to 1. make use out of the recent cards (for newbies and $$$) and 2. to keep the game alive overall ($$$). Yes it is about business but it is about change too. Players of a trading card game should expect the responciblity to adapt to change in cards and in strategy because staying with the same cards will become stale.
P.S. There are still people playing Magi Nation?

Why does it matter what Wizards does for their tournaments? You can still play Pokemon - you just can't participate in the small number of events that Wizards sponsers, without making an investment in at least 60 cards in the appropriate range.
On ebay, you can pick up that many cards for less than $10 - shoot, a new theme deck costs less than $10.
The tournament formats that Wizards uses does not influence any gaming that you wish to do on your own. If you are fortunate to have a local league, and that league establishes similar rules, then take some of your duplicates and trade with others with duplicates from the newer series.

Another reason for banning whole sets is when doing deck checks, knowing what set symbols are banned can make for quick checking (thought LC kind of puts a damper on that). For example, with all of Fossil banned, any card with the Fossil symbol should not be in a modified deck (unless reprinted as a promo or in Legendary Collection).

Ahhh, now that's what at least 90% of Pokémon players who go on the 'net care about - winning that GC or SC. Winning Worlds. "Patiently" waiting for SuperBattleZone so they can win that too. They want to win those tournaments WotC does. [ January 14, 2003, 04:44 AM: Message edited by: BJJ763 ]

Anyone know of an ongoing list that shows the specific cards which are not permitted? As was mentioned, just because a tournament says "Neo or newer" series does NOT mean that most of your cards are not usable - Legendary Collection for instance included many of the original base set cards, making it possible to continue to use those cards.
It would be nice if someone tracked that information though...
