There were lots of rumours around the licence to issue the Pokémon TCG cards in the US (and presumably the rest of the world excluding Japan). Does anyone know if this has been settled? If not, when will it be decided?
The reason that I ask is that Wizards are releasing of a lot of Pokémon TCG cards at the moment ("Best of" Promos, "Pokémon Centre/Nintendo mag" Promos, at least two (maybe even three) HUGE expansion sets where the Japanese sets have been combined). To me it looks like WotC are making sure that they don't have a single unreleased card left when the licence runs out. This doesn't necessarily mean that WotC believe that will miss out on the new licence, it is sounds like sound business practice in case they don't get the renewal.
I for one hope that WotC will continue to release the cards outside of Japan...

Well, we'll probably not hear anything on this if they do get it renewed, and odds are it will.
In other words, no news is good news. [ December 16, 2002, 05:37 AM: Message edited by: yoshi1001 ]

Sigh...
Yoshi: "Ignorance is Bliss?"
I can fully understand if the people at WotC don't want to reveal what's going on during the negotiations. I'm just curious about WHEN we can expect to know if WotC gets the licence and if they don't WHEN the licence expires...

WotC is assuming they'll be renewed, judging by their plans. Pokemon USA stated in a conversation with Skywolf they were pleased with WotC.
Even if the deal is disclosed, there may not be an exact date...that's why it's called a negotiation.
I wouldn't worry, though.

Of course they've made plans for a contination! I can't really see a serious company saying "Hey, Coooooool, we got the deal, let's start our planning now!" They're probably prepared for not getting the licence as well, but we know nothing of those plans.
Just let's hope for a positive answer as soon as possible -
Hey, Santa, can you deliver on this one?

I seem to remember hearing that the contract goes up for grabs in April. If Wizards is still in production in May, then I think we're safe.

You all do realize that they have gone through this at least a few times before already?
The only reason it all seems so critical now is because of the rumors that were spread.
Not that we don't have to worry about Nintendo saying, "Hey, we're printing up all these e-reader cards for everything except Pokemon. Maybe we should print those up too." But, there is nothing we can do about it, so why worry until or if it happens.

The last time I checked, "a few" ment "more than two", and as the first set was released in 1999 that would imply that the licence is renewed annualy? Is that something regulated by licensing laws? Otherwise it sounds pretty time-consuming to renew the licence every year as it apparently takes months to negotiate the deal.
Anyway, IF the licence is renewed every year then I can understand why WotC can't tell us about release dates etc in advance. However, I fail to see why WotC can't simply state that this is the case? The main reason why rumours will start to circulate is when there is no information available and people start to speculate. The ultimate way to stop the rumour mill is to release information. However, I know that the WotC dogma is "no information until it is set in stone", so this will mean that we will have to live with speculations arising now and then...

April rings a bell and sounds logical, that should be after Skyridge has been released. It'll be interesting to see what happens after Skyridge. Let's hope WotC still runs the show after that... [ December 17, 2002, 03:42 AM: Message edited by: Planteon ]

Like the MT's said a lot of times, that kind of information may not be public ... and will not be I think.
Some recent announcements like 2 new sets, Battle Zone, new promos, Delegate Program, Super Battle Zone and the extra budget for it, ... make me think everything's ok concerning that license. Would Wizards put efforts and money in a product they'll not have in a couple of months anymore ?
But I believe we don't have to speculate on the license question anymore. Of course it's very important to all of us, but Wizards/Hasbro will not give public information on the subject anyway.

Now this is something my tiny mind can't understand... Why is so sensitive to say when a licence runs out? I'm not asking about the details of the negotiations, just curious about the date when it should be finalised! It's like If I'm asking when I'm getting my Christmas presents and being told "I can't tell you what's in your boxes" when the answer should be "Christmas Eve" (in Sweden/Norway) or "Christmas Day" (US/UK)... Planteon, have you considered that it would not be socially conducive to tell us when the actual dates are? I mean, what would people do if they knew? Panic unncessarily, maybe? Just what I think.

Why should people panic if they knew that the licence came up annually in, say April?

Duck and cover.
Folks, I wouldn't even worry about it. The odds of non-renewal are pretty low.

Planteon, think Martha Stewart. At certant times companies can not release information so that their stocks don't start plumiting because of bad news. And a possible loss of a big money maker would definatly qualify as bad news.
Anyways, I think you're being paranoid about the releases. WOTC has been trying to catch up with Japan in any way that they can without flooding the market with new cards for a long time.
Besides, WOTC just banned Slowking mostly out of MF's wishes, as stated in the chat. So, doing things for your licesncer (sp?) at the risk of being unpopular when you're going to be dropped soon by them doesn't seem very logical.

(Insert your favourite blasphemy here)...! My assumpiton is that WotC will get the licence, have I ever written anything else? I think that what WotC are doing makes absoulute sense, both by making sure that they don't sit on loads of unreleased cards and to have a shorter lag compared to Japan. However, I find the arguments that "Ignorance is bliss" very disturbing!
