This is bound to affect Pokemon, but as to how -- I have no idea. It will depend on what kind of game dynamics WoTC creates for this new entry. But I don't find it encouraging -- I suspect that a lot of Wizards creative effort is going to be channeled into this "new" thing.

I think it's going to a fun game. I had a brief time with NeoPets... I just ran out of free time for it.
It probably will have the same target audience as Pokémon. In that way, it will probably effect Pokémon. I just hope it doesn't follow in trend made by Yu-Gi-Oh! by taking players away from Pokémon.
I will try the game out. If it is fun, I'll stay with it. If it's not, I won't. Either way, I'll stay with Pokémon.

Why would they go and do that when they're cutting down on liscensed products?
Personally, I don't think this will have any immediate affect on how Hasbro treats Pokemon. If you look at the Wizards main page, Pokemon is right at the top, where one would logically put the best products (Heck, the article linked to says "[Wizards] produces the world’s best-selling Pokémon® and Magic: The Gathering® TCGs").
I suppose alterations in sales after its release could alter Pokemon's position but not by much. However, I doubt it would affect Pokemon enough to make a big impact. Instead, I figure Hasbro/Wizards will probably stop some less-popular liscensed products. (How popular is Harry Potter right now?)

I will say his much:
If WotC loses the Pokemon license, there is NO WAY I will touch NeoPets.
It does NOT look good. I just wonder how something supposedly so big has escaped my attention entirely until now.
Even Pokemon I heard about before the game.
If the rug were being pulled out from under WotC, I'd understand, but that's not the way the people from WotC has made it seem.
I have devoted a lot of time and money to make the game successful, simply because I enjoy the game and I like others to as well. I don't have any loyalty to any company.
I will follow the game, even if it leads away from WotC.

Neopets, from what I know of them, they are virtual "pets" that people raise and care for. I have not seen anything else for "Neopets" other than online.
This seems to be a very limited franchise right now. There is no merchandise for Neopets, no videogame, or anything else.
The same concern arose when "Harry Potter" was released as a TCG. Harry Potter is a VERY successful francise worldwide, with everything from Lego's to a very popular movie franchise, to of course the J.K Rowling Books of the same name.
The TCG though, at least here, BOMBED. I think one box was sold. At last check, I don't even remember seeing HP in the top 10 TCG's.
Additionally, remember a similar press release was made for the much talked about "Simpsons" TCG, which also is a VERY successful franchise, with the TV series going on its 13th season. An announcement was made for that TCG months ago, and guess what, I have not seen a WotC Simpsons TCG yet.
Also, as Orange Soda pointed out, Hasbro is looking to concentrate more on ITS OWN "Core" Brands and cut back on licensed products, which of course, Neopets, Pokemon and Harry Potter are.
So, I really don't forsee anything happening anytime soon (if at all) with a Neopets TCG, as I don't feel that WotC has the resources nor the budget for such an undertaking.
WotC/Hasbro's "TCG Baby" right now, is Magic: The Gathering, and I doubt that that will change any time soon. Pokemon most likely, as far as sales of WotC products go, is #2, which is still VERY good, when it comes to numbers that count.
My two cents.

Neopets are bigger than you think. My sister is a big fan of the game. She has T-Shirts and 10+ stuffed animals. Merchandise is out there.

Pojosama:
Thanks for the info. I wasn't aware that merchandise actually existed, as I have never seen any "Neopets" merch. out in this area to date.
However, I thought I would share some information with you. I just happend to go to WotC "Press Release" site, and I found the following information out, that might interest some of you:
I was able to go back as far as April of 2002. In that time, there have been 56 press releases issued by WotC. The breakdown is as follows:
7 - Focus on Pokemon 7 - Focus on M:TG 8 - Focus on WotC Company Information (New appointments, etc.) - No mention of a Simpsons TCG either. 10 - Focus on Events - Primarily M:TG, Pokemon and SW:TCG 2- Focus on Harry Potter, with the last new expansion released in October of 2002. 9 - Focus on Showdown/Sports 13 - Focus on other/Misc. Items.
My deduction from all this, is that the IP rights for Harry Potter are in trouble and NOT Pokemon.
However, time shall tell. Aquapolois is selling well from what others have said, so Pokemon is still VERY viable indeed. I went through my "Neopets" phase, and it quickly wore off.

I imagine TPC having a problem with the name NeoPets if they and WotC are not on friendly terms in the future...
Look at the trouble WotC went to to come up with... SkyRidge! They couldn't find a better name that didn't have trademark problems.
You can bet that TPC would raise issues of confusion if there were Neo Pokemon and Neo Pets Trading cards.

To be honest, I am not the least bit worried. If you look at pojo.com's main page, it says the sales of Pokemon cards have gone up (according from info found in Inquest) putting pokemon at number 3 once again. It is beating out DBZ.
Numbers don't lie. Hasbro has to be aware of pokemon's sales increase. So My Prediction: There will be a future.

I think some of you are jumping to conclusions.
Remember we are in the business of making Card games. So it is natural for us to bring new ones to the market. There is a lot of undiscovered country out there and there is room for all kinds of games that appeal to a wide variety of people.
Pokémon is doing fine as far as I'm concerned. The Hasbro report is very careful to be non-specific about the liscensed products it is talking about.
It certainly does not say they will not consider liscensed product.
Worry about this product is not worth your time as it concerns Pokémon.
Besides A strong Neopets game is a good thing all around for you. That should not be too hard to figure out.
All TCG's either last ot they don't. The ones that don't some times do Real well at first, but when the fad is over the real teat of a game is it's appeal, mechanic, and support for OP amongst players.
My .02 cents

Looks to me like it will be like Furby, Digimon TCG, Metabots TCG, and the Harry Potter TCG. Max out in a couple months of selling, then die away with the rest of the games. We all remember Yu-Gi-Oh though. We must be cautious.

I think it was smart to make a tcg. I mean there are millions of people playing neopets, and this millions will buy millions and millions of packs and decks. I myself play neopets, and are interested in this. I don't think it will be better than pokemon because neopets doesn't have 300+ creatures to work with, and they won't be creating new ones anyday now. These cards will proberly just be like a kiddey game with learning stuff like math and english. And neopets like to put codes on their stuff so you can get free stuff on neopets, and if they do that, I will buy atleast 10 packs. If everybody who plays neopets buy 10 packs, at 3 bucks each, that will be 1,416,221,580 dollars Wizards get.

What can it hurt(famous last words). It looks like another fad (of course that's been said of Pokemon). It might get new players into the game (then again maybe not). Well that's real certain.
What I do know for sure is a little "friendly competion" never hurts. Pokemon has strong numbers and great fans. If Wizards loses or gives up the licenses, I'm sure someone else will pick it up(it is a good game, good seller, and not a WOTC original). I'm not worried by (or interested in) a NeoPets TCG).
It might be good for us all (but probably not).
