I'm planning on taking part in the Pokemon Fan Appreciation Tournament, and I need to know how to play the first 3 rounds of Theme Deck Sealed Deck Format. The info says a themedeck and 3 card-e boosters will be supplied. Can anyone explain this format to me?

--------------------
Best Decks
Kurai Tsuki no Kokoro
Dark Ampharos/Dark Espeon
31-7

Kage Ha!
Dark Scizor
8-0

Elm, Oak, Cleffa and Copycat are archetypes.

YGO Deck:
Yukai na Shi ni yotte Ryu
Pleasant Death by way of Dragon
25-8

Simple, you get a theme deck, and you use the boosters to modify the deck before the tournament begins. Depending on the format, you build either a 40 or 60 card deck.

I am almost sure it will be 60 cards in the deck. Think about it, you already have a 60 card deck, you just get another 27 cards to modify it.

It's a 40 card deck. You play for 4 prizes. We did it at Worlds. IMHO, by turning the decks into smaller decks, you make them quicker. In a 60 card deck, with minimal draw power, it would be unlikely that you would ever get to your evolved Pokemon. In my 40 card deck, I had 5 Bills. It was so quick that decking was an issue. Everyone who I know who played it had fun. The event was sooo popular, that MTM, DMTM and company had to quickly add on a second event--meaning that there were twice the number of spots (64) that they had expected.

From the Pokemon floor rules. Bear in mind this is a Limited format...
231. Deck-Size Construction Rules
Limited decks must contain exactly forty cards. Players are not restricted to four of any one card in Limited tournament play. A player uses that exact 40 card deck throughout the tournament. All additional cards gained from the draft or sealed event not used in the 40 card deck must be removed from the tournament.

So 5 Bills is a good thang!

I remember the deck I ended up with at worlds. I was hoping for one of the base 2 decks because they usually have the broken pokemon or trainers. I got wallop instead. I felt much better when I saw the elm (none of the base 2 decks had oak), double gust, the two scythers, and the four tyrogue!!!!

OK, so this is the four prize, 40 card deck, next question - what happens after this part of the tournament is over? do you just keep the cards?

Yes.

BTW, this is one reason why draft is a good format for new players. It builds their card library so they can make more decks.

Why would WOTC want the cards back? It would kind of be hard to distribute them back into card packaging...plus they won't have control over pokemon anymore, so they would just end up giving them away or burning them or something =/

btw guys...i usually know stuff, but what type of decks will be going around? Ones from base all the way to recent? Or just Card-E decks? I'm assuming we will get 1 of each card-e booster. :/

Oh yeah - well a few of us were fortunate enough to get the Rocket Devastation deck. Now there's a real powerhouse. [Roll Eyes]
I believe Josh actually dropped and went for the second event rather than play with that thing. I wish I had... I'm sorry but this is where the skill vs luck issue comes up. The Rocket decks are junk. The only place luck would come in is:
1) you're bad luck to draw it.
2) if you actually won with the stoopid thing...

Feh...lets see what I remember from teh challenge.

At first I got teh Trouble theme deck and was like...oh good god. Then there were 2 empty spaces that someone had inadvertently placed 2 theme decks. One of them being Devestation and another being Psych Out. Now I was tempted to trade but kept the urge until the person across from said, "HEY! Thats the Wigglytuff deck" and then tosses his Wallop deck and takes the Psyche Out. Naturally, I take the Wallop deck...I mean its not like anyone else was gonna use it...and it was still random and there were all these other people trading so yeah.

So afterwards I go through my deck and see Freddy spazzing out over his Seadras and Magmars...poor guy, he went 3-3 I believe.

So I take out my deck and I gaze at teh 4 Tyrogues... oooh pretty. And then open my boosters and naturally dont get a single card that helps. So I take out the deadweight from the deck and have myself a stable deck with scythers, tyrogues, and a butterfree line.

Wallop v50.5L0W

3 Caterpie
2 Metapod
1 Butterfree (Disc)
2 Scyther
2 Dratini
1 Dark Dragonair
1 Dark Dragonite
1 Tauros
4 TYROGUE!!!

1 Elm
2 Double Gust
2 Moo Moo Milk
1 Bill
2 Super Rod

15 Grass Energy

Round 1: Light- Neo:Destiny
Round 2: Psych Out- Base Set2
Round 3: Power Reserve- Jungle
Round 4: Water Blast- Jungle
Round 5: Trouble- Rocket
Round 6: Devestation- Rocket (we ID)

So after the swiss I wind up in first and then face the same person I did in round 4 and this time lose to her miserably :'(

So yeah, I think at the ComicCon and GenCon, LC, Expeditoin, Aquapolis, and Skyridge decks will be all thrown in to the mix...and a couple of them already have their strategy set out for them...so yeah, good luck children ^_^

I talked to MTM at Origins, and he indicated, albeit not very clearly, that they would be distributing all the theme decks, and not just those from LC onward. Of course, his reply was steeped in the usual amounts of "probably", "Almost sure", and "it's possible". We'll see...
