[CHRISBO EDIT - Fixed title to be more descriptive.]
We all know the status of pokemon in the U.S. and have an ok idea about it in europe, but how is it doing in Japan? Has it's popularity decreased also? [ October 28, 2002, 04:01 PM: Message edited by: Chrisbo ]

From what I have heard, far from it. The most recent thing I heard was Pokemon was still selling strong in Japan, and was very popular. I also heard it had been outselling its competition (Yu-Gi-Oh) and YGO had significantly dropped in sales there. But keep in mind, they've had YGO a lot longer than we have over here.

From what I hear, Pokémon could be on its way to becoming a long-lasting brand in Japan, much like Sanrio/Hello Kitty. Yet another Pokémon Center store either will be, or already has opened in Japan, making a total of three in addition to the Rockefeller Center NYC store. It's a lot of fun to look at the Japanese Pokémon Center site( http://www.pokemoncenter-online.com/ ) with the help of a translation site such as cafeglobe.com ( http://www.cafeglobe.com/cafe/wotg/index_en.html ).
Hope this helps.

From what I've heard, TCGs (or "trecas" as they call it over there) are really hot in Japan at the moment, with Pokémon being the best selling.

Hmmm possibly to do with the cartoon series not being shown on-air during peak times on 'regular' terrestrial channels? That's what happened in the UK anyway. Plus the fact that when Pokémon was BIG it didn't need promoting. Company reps just got lazy, departments got downsized, people stopped caring..

Hi everybody, long time no chat. I never quit the game, or stoped playing at my league, I just havnt been up for talking on the message boards for the past gazillion years.
Any how I think pokemon has slowed down so much every where else but its home town becuase of how the cartoon has turned out. The Yu Gi Oh cartoon pretty much carries its card game and being a pretty good cartoon I think people will buy the cards more and more until they get bored. Same thing for DBZ, its a good show(to most) and even though Im not sure if the cards sell as well as Pokemon or YGO the cartoon carries it. I pretty much hate both my self but thats just me.
Now I love the Pokemon cartoon but some times I wonder what the translators think when they are translating and what the animators think when they animate. Have any of you noticed that some episodes will make Pokemon battles look so cool and other episodes will make them look so incredibly terrible. Its like a different set of people draw the pokemon fighting for every episode. If nearly every episode had a good looking battle and not always helping someone out it would be much better. Well thats what I think and I could go on. [ October 26, 2002, 05:38 PM: Message edited by: Matthew76 ]

Right when i thought this subject was over..... At a league i go to, i was informed after taking to an experienced person about games that Yu-gi-oh is gaining popularity fast in Japan. After what Lacy said, i'm not sure what to believe. Can anyone set this clear? also, if there is anyone out there who have seen fads like this come and go, how much longer should i wait to sell off my yu-gi-oh cards, if i should? what indications should i look for that the game is about to flop?

I would probably sell them now for the most profit since it's pretty popular now. The game may be about to flop if interest dies down in your area, or something new comes along. League attendance is a good indication.

Well, from what I have heard, Pokemon is having a "resurgence" in Japan right now.
Consider these facts:
According to a somewhat recent Reuters article: YGO sales have declined 60% from the same period a year ago.
A NEW Pokemon center in Japan has recently opened. This makes the total number of PC's in that country 3 now.
Pokemon continues to be one of the top ten programs on Japanese television.
Every year Japan Railways has a "Pokemon Rally" where thousands of Pokemon fans go train hopping to earn exclusive Pokemon promo cards.
Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire titles rank in the top 5 of the most sought after games in that country.
Pokemon is about to enter into its 6th successful season on Japanese Televsion.
Pokemon the 6th movie is due out in Japanese movie houses next July.
Pokemon has established itself as a very dominent force in a very, very competitive market. Fads come and go in Japan, even faster there than they do stateside, YGO I don't think will have the "staying power" that Pokemon has had, and continues to generate year in and year out.

Hm.
Well, I think that YGO isn't a problem... but here's something: Pokemon should be successful in Japan. It's THERES! Just like such shows are successful over here... and fads... and stuff. Disney anyone?
So I'm not certain we should even be basing pokemon's popularity on what Japanese figures look like. Nor should we base Yu-Gi-Oh's. Because truthfully, it doesn't prove a whole lot. The Japanese ANIME fad has come and gone, and now we have the staying group.
It doesn't seem like Pokemon is one of those, but who knows? Maybe it is. But even if it does stay for a long time, it'll always be targeted at the younger audience. Not us ;x

I wish I lived in Japan! THey're so lucky! It's practically Pokemon HEAVEN over there!
I also know the main reason Pokemon has delcined here... the horrible truth is that kids stop likeing Pokemon because BIGGER kids are beating them up for liking it! Trust me, I've learned first hand (thank Ho-oh for martial arts) Bullies search and pick out the kids who like Pokemon, taunt them, tease them, harass them, trash thier homework, and try and beat them up while they walk home from school.
