As I was leaving Jonathan, Eric and a friend to play in the Magic Grand Prix event, the store owner (also a TO) asked us if we were still playing Pokemon. Having a Masters in Accounting, I told her it depends. She asked Eric how old he was and if he would be willing to Judge the Nintendo's events, especially with this new format. She has found out that younger kids respect kids their own age (especially with Yu-Gi-Oh and other younger player TCGs). She said she could use all three boys if they wanted to help out during the tournament. I told her that is up to them if them wanted to help and depends on our schedule. Since we planned to take a vacation during the first two weeks of August, we might not be able to help her with the August event unless it was held during the last two weeks of August. She indicated that perhaps they could start with the September events.
Now, without prying information from this store owner, I suspect she has had a lot of inquiries from her customers about this Nintendo GBA/TCG format. She also indicated to me there are a lot of kids that come to her store that play the GBA. She also indicated how generous the prizes were for this event and how great the Pokemon TCG players were shen she held the Challenge events (2001 & 2002) events at her store.
So, how many of the former WotC Pokemon Professors have been approached by store owners to help at the Nintendo up-coming events?

I personally don't play the GBA, so I've been asking some of my league kids who do play GBA to help run a GBA/TCG tourney. So far, Nintendo hasn't "officially" contacted our store about holding a GBA/TCG Challenge event, but then again, we might not have been selected to hold one of these events.

I run the Battlezone for our store. They have not even been contacted by Nintendo to sell the Ruby/Saphire cards.
We play at a store that specializes in Trading Cards, Science Fiction/Fantasy Books, and Games. No Electronic games. I suspect that they aren't even on Nintendo's supply list. When kids want to buy Ruby/Saphire cards, they have to go to the local Target or Circuit City. Maybe one of those stores has been contacted.
Our club combines Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh with a little Magic. I suspect that the club will continue for awhile unaffected by all of the licensing changes. [ July 05, 2003, 04:42 PM: Message edited by: Crobat1 ]

I have a feeling that the new tcg/gba series is going to be more mall based and corporate store based than local retailer based. Just my hunce.

I've been going around asking stores if I can help them...
So far I've got a store that is willing to let me bring in customers to it and if it is in their best interest, to let me run the new League there...
Things are looking up...

my sympathies GLB... It doesn't make sense
The most charitable thing I can think of is that Nintendo's OP has a few teething problems! If Nintendo aren't offering the events to Master Profs who also run Gyms then all I can say is does anyone know the number of the local firebrigade as there seem to be a few arsonists about.

Thanks for your sympathies. I got a copy of the tournament information email that was sent. Here are the two tournaments that Nintendo it planning.
§ PokĂ©mon Ruby & Sapphire Challenge †any weekend in August, except the first weekend.
§ Pokémon -e TCG: EX Sandstorm perelease – first two weekends in September
So the next set is call EX: Sandstorm. That is all I have to post for now about this whole thing, just is a little frustrating that Nintendo passed on those that filled out the app.

You all must be joking, that you agree with that Challenge event. I am playing the pokemon tradingcardgame and not the GBA game and i don't want to play the computergame. Don't give Nintendo a change to combine (read you must have a gameboy to play in a tourney)the tradingcardgame with a computergame even if the support is nice or more than nice.
Think about what is going to happen in the future.

I noticed the other day that when talking to Jimmer (head of OP at Pokemon USA) that they are requiring TO to have room for 150 people. Now does anyone here seriously think that any of these events is going to have anywhere close to 100 let alone 150 players. I guess they think there Gameboy is more popular then it really is.
Before I was looking forward to Pokemon USA (yes Pokemon USA not Nintendo, they pointed this out to all of us at Origins) taking over the TCG. However the more I find out and the longer they deny me the opportunity to run the events, the more I drift from the game. If places that held the game and tournaments before are no longer allowed to run them, how do they expect to keep players interested?

Whoa...isn't the 150 player requirement on the premier TO stuff?
I don't think Nintendo is going to require that for your general run-of-the-mill TOs; apps for those aren't available yet, right?
I'd also guess that this is pretty standard requirements for premier TOs and that WotC's, Decipher's, UD's etc. requirements (insurance, ability to rent a hotel ballroom for events, etc) are pretty much the same. We just haven't seen this before since we're not "premier"s.
Please don't panic, guys...I know change is difficult, and we don't have a lot to go on yet for events on 'our' levels. But I really don't think this is 'meant' for us, the professors/GLs/MPs...but more for the "big" TOs, like the Alan Hochmans and Mike Guptils.

Well, I for one am not up for this premier event.
Yes, I could probably secure the venue and assemble the staff, and procure the insurance... but it would take a huge amount of effort and time.
I am not willing to expend that level of effort managing GBA-fest, even if it does introduce a few new players to the TCG.
I would probably be willing to do it for a TCG-only tourney, because it sparks my passion.
I'm pulling my hat for out of the ring for now.

There is two BIG differences between the second STS qualifiers and TPC asking Magic Primere TOs to organize their first Primere Pokemon Event.
For one point, WotC did not ask Magic Primere TOs if they wanted to organize local STS Qualifiers. Most were forced into it (due to their contracts). TPC is only asking WotC's Primere TOs if they want to organize it. The difference now is that WotC's Primere TOs are NOT JUST MAGIC ORGANIZERS. There are plenty of Pokemon, Star Wars, and Magic Primere TOs. As well, they are not forcing these individuals to run the events.
Additionally, looking back at the second STS qualifiers, there was a very little percentage of people judging events. Now we have a whole bunch and if a Magic Primere TO does organize a Pokemon Event, there will be enough help and assistance given to make sure the event runs as any other Pokemon Tournament should, primere or local. -Phil

Gosh and I thought it was just me. I too question the requirement of 150 persons. But my biggie is that they want it in a proposal with dates for events next month? Most places will not reserve without a NRD, this "proposal" is by no means a guarantee from Nintendo they will accept. Payment for services is after the fact so it's OOP up front. Now granted this is for Premier status which I would like to have - but give me more time than a couple of weeks and give me more than a maybe on whether I'm going to get it. Anyway - sure seems like a wing-and-a-prayer plus cash reserves just to play. I talked to Toys-r-us - supposedly best friends with Pokemon again. Corporate has put out no official word so the stores can't accept posters to advertise. Just a lot of loose ends...

Well guys and gals I gotta say I relish the chance to Organise an event of this size and I have done it before.
The Rainham Gym Challenge accomodated 109 players we had insurance, something our regular league has anyway and we had medical cover in the form of 2 guys from the St John Ambulance Brigade.
Yes it took some planning and effort but that is what we have had to do over here in the UK for the last 4 years anyway.
It seems that you guys and gals maybe a little too used to getting it on a plate from WotC .. like we have been saying to you it's time to really show your commitment, step up to the plate or walk away.... your choice.
The future is different and Nintendo shaped sure, but that's no reason why it won't be as much fun!
GBA's at TCG events been there done that, Organised events over 100+ people with insurance - been there done that too, want to help out Nintendo and grow the game and the brand ... yep ready to go..
