I think Martin has hit the nail on the head. I keep seeing all these little kids at our League who try and play Yu-Gi-Oh, but just don't know the rules. I have proven the local judge wrong once already on a very substantial issue-when side decks can be used. And it is a "judge"-we are "fortunate" enough to have a real, sanctioned, Yu-Gi-Oh league, which is actually a weekly tournament with a $5 cover charge. [Frown] This really hurts Yu-Gi-Oh as in our area. Pokemon League has always been free. It also forces players to choose one or the other. Then there is the state of the game, which we will ignore, but I must add that it is getting much better (there are finally alertrnatives to Beatdown [Big Grin] ). As for official rulings, there is a very small list of rulings on the upperdeck site. Edo has translated several Japanese rulings, but either Upperdeck or Konami has tried to shut Edo down before (I am not sure which), because he said his rulings were from official Japanese sources (and they are). What am I saying? Upperdeck is killing Yu-Gi-Oh, so we should be prepared to offer its disenfranchised with something else to play. At our League, there re maybe 5 "pure" Yu-Gi-Oh players that both only play that and/or only come for it. The other 15-20 are all from the Pokemon League.

For any who need to know, I play both Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh, and currently no other TCGs. The only other TCG I can recall playing was called Overpower, I believe, which featured various comic book characters. As for my experience with Yu-Gi-Oh, it has been mixed. I am probably at least twice as good at Yu-Gi-Oh as Pokemon , and have won one Unsanctioned tournament of about 30 people (half of which knew the basics, 5 of which were good). I also ran our area's (and all of Iowa's [Roll Eyes] ) first sanctioned Yu-Gi-Oh tournament.

Tootlie-pipski! [Smile]

Edit: Now that Sjhadow Card mentions it, I think it was Konami, but can't remember for certain. If you have time, search Edo's Yu-Gi-Oh site ( http://www.stormpages.com/edhrzic/Yugioh.htm ) as i think it is mentioned somewhere on there. [Smile]

Actually, it was konami that tried to shut down edo. It's an excellent site (if you any common sense and knew the address, you'd visit it) but because it was forced to take the title of having "unofficial rulings" nobody has to believe you when you show them a ruling from the site, even if they know you are right. Yugioh lacks coheision in its rulings and some are so complex, little kids don't get it. Some rules take the fun out of the game. Also, the rules are not inforced. you are not allowing to play with no sacrifices. the rulebook states that you "must" tribute. I like some of the artwork on yugioh cards though. I wish pokemon had some of that. I give yugioh until febuary before it starts dying. Then, i'm going to try to sell off my yugioh cards or trade them for pokemon cards.

Well the true test of any Trading Card Game is of course longevity. So we will just have to wait and see what kind of longevity Yu-Gi-Oh has.

Of course any company wants you to play their game. New ones come and go all depending on how good the game is and the kind of OP that is dedicated to it.

Then of course there is the "Buy it because it looks good factor". One can never underestimate that. All TCG's depend on this. It depends on marketing and media presence. Many games go through a "Fad" stage,Pokémon did, Magic did as well. Both are still around years after.

Establishment of TCG's cannot happen until the "Craze" dies and the game develops.

After reading the post, I have come to one conclusion. That many people THINK that they have to choose between ONE or the OTHER when it comes to TCG's. WRONG!

Steve who plays at YORK is a Pokemon Professor and is also active with YGO. My thought is: More power to you Steve. I hope you continue to enjoy BOTH games for a long time to come. Why should this man be ridiculed for liking something that some others don't? Truth is, he shouldn't. Remember back in the "heydey" of Pokemon? When there were a SLEW of People criticizing US as players of this "kiddie" game? Well, those people finally ACCEPTED the fact that Pokemon was the game that we enjoyed and will continue to enjoy. My argument then, remains the same to this day, "There is NOTHING stating that one cannot play both games."

At my league, many of my players DO indeed play both games, we run Pokemon Tournies on Sunday's and YGO tournies on Monday's, so players can play both game if they so desire, and many do just that.

Is YGO MY thing? No. Probably never will be. I have tried the game, and I have attempted to watch the series many times, just to be left with a very "one-sided" premise to the entire franchise. Does that mean that I discourage others from playing YGO? No. Why? Because it is THEIR choice to play one or the other, or BOTH, just like it is my choice to play Pokemon.

Take Care,

While it's not this way everywhere, where I play at it has become play either Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh.

It started off with only 1 YGO tournament a month, then 1 every Saturday to where it's at now with unsanctioned tournaments on Wednesday & Friday evenings & the sanctioned one on Saturday afternoon.

It had been a Pokemon tournament on Friday evening & Saturday afternoon until the entrants were too few to justify. A lot of the players would rather play YGO because it's "new" & different.

Now don't get me wrong. At first I was just watching the 40+ YGO tournament players while I played in the under 8 Pokemon tournaments. Now I play in some YGO tournaments on Saturday's. It's better than sitting there doing nothing, and one of the big reasons I took up Pokemon in the first place was to spend time with my son, (who also plays both), so I am still accomplishing that goal.

I just hope that if YGO continues there would be some way for the store to have a separate time for each game. It sure is nice to try out a new deck at a tournament which all leads up to the challenge series, & this is an oppertune time to test & tweak. If it means only getting to try out a deck only occasionally then I might not feel comfortable with it.

In the past we've had, & still have Pokemon league or a tournament, going on 7 times in a week. Now with battlezone it doesn't sound like it will handle that much activity, so maybe there will be time for battlezone & YGO. If there are no more Saturday morning & evening Pokemon leagues then maybe 1/2 of the day can be battlezone & the other 1/2 be YGO> I know that would make me happier.

Sorry this is so long but I do tend to ramble on at times.

I just gotta toss my 2 pesetas in here.
Economically speaking, most people do in fact have to choose. Depends on how serious and also how deep are your pockets.
The story usually goes like this (and I've seen it with 3 TCGs now).
1 - new fad hits town, people jump on board.
2 - finally figure out how to play and discover they need more cards (natch)
3 - Sell OLD TCG cards to get new ones.
4 - Fad dies - nobody to play with - decide to go back to old standby (Pokemon) where the GL has struggled to keep the game alive.
5 - Not competive at all anymore because all their good cards are sold and gone - nobody wants to buy the has-been fad cards so can't afford to get necessary cards to be competitive again.
6 - Leaves game in disgust because they simply can't keep up anymore.

In reality - very few people can afford to SERIOUSLY get involved in more than one TCG. We are serious about Pokemon - we dabble in Magic. Heck I usually buy a box or two of MtG when a new set comes out - versus 3 to 4 boxes of Pokemon. Even at a discount that represents close to $500 every few months. That's some serious change folks... I'll be dipped if I get sucked into something like YGO. Can't afford it. And I bet most others can't either.

I get some cards and learn to play just about every card game that comes out but yugioh and pokemon are the only 2 that I still play actively and I'm considering getting back into magic too. I have cards and decks for Harry Potter, X-Men, Magic, Pokemon, Star Wars (the WotC made one, never played the decipher one), Monster Rancher, 7th Sea and probably some more that I can't remember, I don't even know how to play those last 2 and never did.

as far as rulings in yugioh are concerned there is an official master ruling document, but you can't see it unless you have access to the retailers section of the official site and there are still alot of questions that could be asked that can't be answered by it.

the official tourney system for yugioh is shut down and season 1 is over with no date released yet for season 2.

when it comes to decks there is a vareity to choose from but not as much as say.. pokemon. I have 3 decks for each game right now (yugioh and pokemon). and you don't nessisarily need to have the best and most expensive cards to win. a couple weeks ago there was a kid playing a game of yugioh and losing horribly so after the game was over and he had been crushed I borrowed his deck and played the same person that he had just lost to and the game looked almost oposite to the previous proving that with skill you can manage with a bad deck or a deck without the best cards. I also help people build new better decks using the cards they already have.

I run both yugioh and pokemon tourneys but recently pokemon players and been rare and many of them have been showing up with yugioh cards as a backup in case the league doesn't happen. last sunday we had a yugioh tourney with 24 players in it (the most we've ever had) and there was no one playing pokemon, the other gym leader was sitting there reading a newspaper.

I consider myself a very good player at both games and enjoy playing both so I'm not taking a side, I'm just filling in some holes so that people have all the information, or at least more then they had before.
