TO: Pokémon Community FR: Chuck Huebner President & Chief Executive Officer Wizards of the Coast
RE: Future Pokémon TCG Releases by Wizards of the Coast
April 28, 2003
I hope you are all looking forward to the Pokémon-e: Skyridge set as much as we are. The Pokémon-e: Skyridge release is a special one for all of us here at Wizards of the Coast because it will be our last.
As many of you may be aware, we were planning to release two additional sets for Pokémon fans this year: Legendary Collection II and Jamboree. Unfortunately, Pokémon USA, Inc. has told us we will not be able to release either of these sets. Wizards of the Coast does not know whether Pokémon USA, Inc. is planning to release these sets themselves at a later date or if the sets are on a permanent hiatus.
We are still moving forward with plans for a Pokémon Fan appreciation tournament to take place Saturday July 26th at the GenCon Gaming Convention in Indianapolis. I’d like to also remind you that Wizards will continue to support Pokémon organized play through BattleZone, the upcoming Skyridge Super BattleZone, the Professor Championship at Origins, and the Team Multi-play Championship at GenCon. Skyridge is a great set that we know fans of Pokémon will enjoy both to collect and to play with during these exciting summer events.
Again, I want to express my deepest gratitude to the millions of players who have purchased our products and participated in the thousands of events that we have hosted such as the Super Trainer Showdowns, mall tours, Pokémon Leagues, and last year’s World Championship in Seattle. We hope you have enjoyed them as much as we have.
I hope you are all having a good spring.
Warm regards,
Chuck

MTM, I have played the game for many years..I have played from a bookstore, to a mall, to th emall tour in Lakeside Mall, events in Chicago, Columbus, Garden City, and Origins, and I will also go to GenCon hopefully this year...I've played many people, and it has been fun for the past years, but it looks like it might be ending... Sure, Nintendo will take it over, and hopefully they will still have events like you guys have, but I will severely miss you and all the other MT's...I know I am already buying 3 boxes of Skyridge, but as this being the last set, it makes me think of what's gone on...I will hope it still stays fun and doesn't become very competitive like Magic.....Also, I hope to see you a couple more times before it's over...Thank you very much for what you've done... *RabidRogueKid*.... MTM,
Thank you for all that you have done for me, and the Pokemon community. Personally I think that Suck that they wont let you release LCII and Jamboree. I was really looking forwars to some of these sets that you were planning on making. What is the reasoning for this, was it WOTC or TPC choice not to make these sets?

Probably someone one in a higher place didnt want to have the same franchise competing against one another. However, we will still have two sanctioning bodies to confuse the public. So fear not.

Moments like these bring into sharp contrast the difference between a class act and that which is not a class act.
MTM, DMTM, and the rest of WOTC: I am forever impressed with what a class act you guys are.
See ya in Columbus and Indianapolis.

Ok, a few things to think about here...
1. Skyridge is coming out soon. So we've got that going for us.
2. Wizards was planning on changing Modified Format as of June 1st. Now that Wizards isn't releasing LC2 and Jamboree, will there still be a format change?
3. Nintendo has said they were going to release their first set in June. Could it be that Nintendo is going to release LC2?
4. Is there any chance that Wizards will reconsider allowing the Nintendo-released set of cards to be used in the new Modified format (assuming there is still a change to Modified)?
5. Will there be a change to Promos that are allowable in the updated Modified format?
6. Worst case is that Modified Format gets changed to include only LC, Expedition, Aquapolis, and Skyridge. Origins and Gencon could get pretty freaky with this lineup.
Thoughts?

Doubt it. June was referring to the release of its first Pokemon-e set.

A: The first Pokémon-e TCG release with Pokémon Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire characters will be available in the North American market in June 2003. Nintendo of America will market and distribute the product. Pokémon USA and Creatures Inc. (the TCG designers) will support NOA.

This is what I posted on another board as well: When I was first told about this, I thought, "No way, this HAS to be a joke. And a very cruel joke at that." Unfortunately, I found out it was the truth, and ... it IS a cruel joke. I feel cheated. Well, I certainly will enjoy Skyridge very much, and purchase considerably more than I would normally. Not only that, but I'll put off buying any Nintendo product until I'm good and ready to do so. Perhaps I shouldn't post this as the way I feel, but if perhaps other people feel the same way I do, perhaps TPC might reconsider and let wizards distribute one more set after Skyridge. But then again, maybe they'll close up shop. Maybe I'm lashing out because I feel cheated, but I'll certainly be more apt to promote Wizards products now. You guys did a wonderful job on pokemon, and I wish you only the best of success in your future endeavours. Thanks again.

Man. If you had to print only one set, I wish it could have been Jamboree. I would have loved to have seen what the MT's would have given us for a designed, new set.
Ah well.

Wow. Just when we thought we had things figuired out, this comes up. MTM, you don't know me, but I started playing at the very beginning, and just a year ago came back into the league and tournament aspect of Pokemon. Just want to let you know that you have done a good job with what you've been given. We all hope Nintendo does the same. I'll be at the SBZ in Niles, IL, for the last SBZ. We will have to make it the best one ever! P.S. Can you post what would have been included in LC2 and all the spoilers for Jamboree, just so we can dream about what could have been?

We've had a good run with Wizards in control; here's hoping that Nintendo managed to fill Wizard's shoes (and they have some really REALLY big shoes).
Good luck, and thanks for all the fish!
Since GenCon will be Pokémon's final event as a Wizards product, let's help it go out with a bang! [smuggles his shotgun on his flight bag]

I sat there in shock for a while when I read that off the Professor List. I guess it's to be expected. I sensed a little trouble when Nintendo said they were going to release they're first set so early. I guess they're doing what looks logical from a business standpoint, choking the competition, but from a customer relations standpoint, this is a bad idea. I love Pokémon, so I will prob. continue to buy cards from TPC/Nintendo, but I will have sour grapes about it.
Maybe TPC will reconsider their mistake, but I sorely doubt it. This really does show who was on our side all along. Thanks for the great support MTs!

The thing I dont get is why did Nintendo change it mind. Did it tell WOTC it could print the new sets, and now they cant? What is up with that?

I hope not-- IMO, it'd be suicide. Basically, if Nintendo is going to avoid weakening the Pokemon TCG franchise, I think they are going to have to give people time to adjust to the switch-- slowly phase out or absorb the Wizards side of the franchise, rather than cut off all they can simultaneously. There have been times in the past when a fairly successful franchise changed hands, and few enough people noticed that it quickly rose in the standings of its genre. Why? Because they did not make a big deal out of severing its ties with the old company. *EDIT This is in response to both BigPoppa and Blaine. [ April 28, 2003, 10:45 PM: Message edited by: dkates ]

I guess it is for the best. Nintendo must have seen that the original plan was Skyridge In April, LCII in May, Nintendo's R/S in June, and Jamboree in July. Not good mixing in such a short time if you ask me, or it could be Nintendo is starting to pump the gas petal a bit. (Now I really, really, really have to get to Origins and Gencon this year).

Though I hoped to see LC II and Jamboree!
It always struck me as odd that the new company was allowing someone who had lost its license to compete and dilute its revenues after June.
Equally I thought it odd that Wotc would release a new set every month for 3 months prior to the handover, for much the same reasons..
I do hope that LCII may still appear...we need another sealed play set. Jamboree!? well with a name like that it could have been real fun.
So its all bad news??? Not quite...If Nintendo's spend on organised play is proportional to its revenues then the more money Nintendo recieve the better for us!
pre-orders being taken at the distributors for Ruby and Saphire...relese date mid June....its not long now.

Aaargh!
I was sooo loking forward to LCII & Jambouree... Does this mean that we will never se Unown R? And those missing Vending Cards? And possible WotC-made cards?
In my mind, Pokémon USA just shot themselves in the foot. Unless they release something similar in the fall they've deprived us of some fun stuff.
Legendary Collection is a GREAT set for drafts, and I would have loved to se another similar set.
And Jambouree, well we can only dream now...
