Dalmuti,

THAT is no surprise. Westminster GOT rid of all its tables like they did LAST year...

THE BLOCK does that all the time. They'll place games on the table for would be customers to try out...

AND as long as I have asked... they have accomodated me IF I ask...

THERE are a few stores that could be helpful... I also know of one...

*Long time no see GK... sheesh harbinger of prosperous news =/

Yeah but Brea has never gotten rid of it's tables before. It was kinda spooky, seeing the back of the store with no tables.
And no thanks, I don't have any leagues I wanna run. Just always used to go in there and hang out and buy stuff, Brea WAS really good for that. I dunno I guess times are a changing, I really liked the staff there and now they are all gone too.

Actually, the gamekeeper that i used to go to (i stopped because yu-gi-oh replaced the pokemon league) stopped accepting personnal checks not because of them shutting down (they actually did not) but because of all the money they were losing due to bounced checks.

So you punish a few thousand check writing customers because you can't be bothered by the potential legal proceedings to get reimbursed for an "Insufficient Funds" transaction?
Poppycock!
And I don't buy this line of "Well everyone prefers Debit Cards and Credit Cards".
Again - poppycock!
My checking account is free, a debit card charges me $10 a month, and a credit card starts accruing interest -- I'll opt for the free option.
And gladly never do business at that store again -- and tell everyone I know never to do business there either.
Since I am at the ripe ol' age of 42, I've seen a large majority of stores that I used to frequent fail 6 months after instituting the "No Checks" policy. I'm not saying that my loss of business ruined them or that my bad-mouthing swayed others to flock elsewhere - it is just a portend of retail death.

Yeah but I know from my work not many people pay by check anymore. And BTW there are two types of people who bounce checks. There are 10% of people who just screwed up, and then there are 90% of people who are writing bad checks. It's funny cuz WAYYYY back in the day I remember Wizards Retail had some sort of check checking (does that make since) service. Then they stopped checking check's, and then they just stopped taking checks. One wonders why they couldn't have just gotten a check checking service again... oh well.
Anyhoo Wizards has not taken checks since just after the New Year as far as I can remember, and they aren't closed yet. So lets see what happens... although not taking checks and THEN canceling leagues... hmmmmm

Like WOAAA! Are you US folks still using personal checks???? [Eek!] [Eek!] [Eek!] [Eek!]

We stopped using them alltogether about 10 years ago or something. I just can't remember when I used one the last time...... NOONE uses them here. We use our banking cards to pay with. Much smoother since they charge your normal account directly so you can't fool the store and also it's so much safer for the store not having to deal with as much cash as before.... In most stores you just use your personal code along with it too so you don't have to find a pen that works [Wink]

I really thought that you guys wheren't so much behind the development in the world....but personal checks??? [NoNoNo] [Wink]

Guess that you need to catch up in that area. [Razz]

On topic though: I think we've had these kind of topics every year around this time. Mostly due to the fact that the holiday season is coming up and the stores don't have the time for leagues. What makes you guys think it's different this year?

Gordon: If you can, get an account at a credit union. They usually have low to no fees and should be able to give you a no fee debit card.

I just got word through the grapevine that the Block Wizards location offically got rid of all it's leagues. I talked to two guys who now play at a local comic store, that they CANCELED the leagues at the Block. Not stopped for the seasons, I mean CANCELED!

You still have to mail payment by check in if the service doesn't use direct debit. Or if you keep forgetting to write down your atm debits.;-) And some places still don't have debit card equipment.

The number is 714-769-4095, I believe.

Okay, I called "The Block" earlier this morning, and I was told very "matter of factly" that LEAGUES HAVE NOT, I repeat, HAVE NOT been canceled.

They have been "seasonally suspended", with them starting up again in January.

Many large store chains cancel League during the holidays for the extra space.

*perhaps the SKY is falling after all*
TIME to CALL all DELEGATES in the OC area!!

I KNOW TOO MANY stores in the area that support MAGIC & other ccg's AND i just checked with the BLOCK (and so did SKYWOLF) league is over BUT the tables are still there.

THE EMPLOYEES (except for ONE incident) have always been kind and IF THERE are tables available have ALMOST always allowed us to trade and battle (or duel)

*One employee was very curt and IMO rude BUT I did enough talking that he gave me the lowdown and became friendlier after that.

*Life goes one NO MATTER who says WE CANNOT battle at their store...

Well I guess that is the end of that. Teaches me to listen to guys in a comic book store. Oh well I guess we will see who is right and who is wrong come January. As much as I like "I told you so's," I hope it isn't true. I know how hard it is to find places to play games, and if Wizards Stores end it that would be pretty sad.

Hi everyone,
I'm also fretting about having a league in my area to attend. I'm an adult female who did, and hopes to continue, attending League at my local Books-A-Million. My situation is also grim because during our last meeting of this season the guy who was running things said that he talked to the local comics/collectibles stores and was told that they're not going to have a league next season. He went on to say that the reason he was checking around is because it's highly unlikely that the Books-A-Million would have a league next season. I'd appreciate any advice or insight y'all could give me so that I could possibly ensure a league in my area next season. I don't know if this bit of information helps, but I'm in Orange Park, Florida. Much appreciation for whatever you can do for me. [Eek!] [Cool] [ROFL] [Cool] [Eek!]

I don't know if this topic is dead or not. But I happened to be at the Westminster store the day after thanksgiving (which was really really really really really really really stupid, since I work an odd schedule and have Monday's off I should have just gone then, when all the normal people were at work anyhoo), and I just want to put this question to the forum. Where are Westminsters tables? I mean I have been there once or twice in my lifetime, and back in the day they had a TON of tables, it took up a quarter of their store. Now it's all gone, they have vanished from existance. Based on the property lines and such their backroom isn't THAT big, where they put all those tables? It's a good question, that deserves to be answered.

Dalmuti I feel I must apologize SO GOOD that you brought this back.

FROM another SOURCE... one VERY CLOSE to the BLOCK... SAY BZ is NOT going to be RUN at these. And supposedly being told by a SoCal higher UP in WotC...

NOW I do not know whether THEY WILL not put the employees to run them or IF VOLUNTEERS can help or NO BZ period.

[Mad]

December will be a very BUSY month.
I'll try to get delegates to these stores if THAT will be possible!! and we MUST be persistent to get to the bottom of the RUMOR. Hoepfully it isn't US who spread it to them.

*UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE*

I have just called WotC corporate offices, and I have had the opportunity to speak with Ms. Freddi Scott directly. I want to re-interate here. Leagues have been *SEASONALLY SUSPENDED* Period!

Ms. Scott tells me that out of 84 WotC/Gamekeeper stores nationwide, 10 of these DO NOT participate in ANY Organized Play whatsoever. The primary reason for this, is due to size and space constraints most likely.

She went on to tell me, that next year, that Organized Play WILL Continue (Pokemon, DBZ, YGO, M:TG, etc). BTW, this *DOES* include "Battlezone" for those of you wondering if that program was going to be included.

She went on to say that the stores at "The Block"
and the store in "Misson Valley" are still holding OP tournaments even now.

I hope that I have "quelled" this fear that some of you players in the OC area have had with regards to organized play in that area.

Once again, LEAGUES have been *Seasonally* supended. With leagues STARTING back up again in January of '03. This comes directly from Ms. Scott herself.

HTH,

Skywolf1

I wonder IF the rumor mill was a self-fulfilling prophecy?

I'll let me friend know, I still suggest we contact local managers about scheduling and such for January & if there is any need for Profs or Master_Profs, delegates, GL's that are not WotC employees.

AND WHAT WOULD WE DO WITHOUT SKYWOLF????

IPGeek:

That comes directly from the top. So, I hope that I quelled some fears that some of you have down there that are most certainly understandable and justifyable.

It wouldn't be a bad idea though, to see about getting volunteers, just to assist WotC with judging issues, maybe due to staff size or amount of business going on during the event.

I am suggesting this just as a courtesy maybe to the stores to help with leagues, in-case the staff is busy doing other things.

Take Care,

Okay people, new questions then.

What, if anything, does Freddi Scott have to do with WotC retail stores. Based on the posts in the Buffy forums I have read, Freddi has nothing to do with WotC Retail, I could be wrong. Also from the Buffy post it's kinda strange that high ups in WotC retail seem to have a different opinion than Freddi Scott. Forgive me if this seems to me to be A) Somebody trying to keep their job. Or B) somebody who is completely unrelated to the management of WotC retail and not knowing what is really going on in the stores. From what I know, things "FormerBrea" said in the Buffy forums is true (recently the entire staff of WotC Brea did quit, it's all new people there right now, and the store is now quite different than it once was). It makes me believe that all of it is true... and it really makes me mad (My other mom and pop local game store recently canceled instore gaming kinda recently too so I have nowhere to play now).

Well there you go... shouldn't have gotten up on my box about this here. Like I said I think we will see what really happens in January. So lets recap

Evidence For
1) "FormerBrea" says that the district manager of So-Cal, is getting rid of leagues.
2) The tables of all local Wizards stores have either vanished completely, or at least in part (haven't been by the block lately. But I know Westminster and Brea have vanished completely).
3) The leagues, by some accounts, were ended early.
4) "FormerBrea" also thought that the manager of all Wizards stores is getting rid of leagues.
5) Freddi might not be in on it. Cuz if they are getting rid of leagues that is her job, and maybe they don't want to tip off Freddi that she won't have a job much longer.
6) Wizards stores are currently interested in making a profit (Which perhaps they feel leagues don't do).
7) Many strange "non-gamer" items have suddenly appeared in Wizards stores (support for point 6).
8) All Wizards stores have suddenly changed their look, pretty drastically (which I have commented on in other places). The new look does not include gaming tables.
9) This theory only works if you believe in a conspiracy by WotC stores. Where they are saying one thing, and doing another.

Evidence Against
1) By all accounts "FormerBrea" is a disgruntled former employee, and thus he or she might be lying.
2) Freddi IS currently the director of leagues in WotC stores. You would think she knew what the fate of leagues would be.
3) Wizards stores have always been around to suppport gamers, and make gaming kewl. It is crazy to think that they would cancel leagues of their own product.
4) The Block (at least the last I checked) still had tables. Actually Brea did too, just the "gaming" tables at Brea now held product.
5) Wizards stores are currently trying to make a profit. Leagues generate profit because it encourages league members to buy more cards (which they hopefully don't get at Frank & Sons).
6) Every responce by the company says that they will not get rid of instore gaming.

Looks 50/50 to me at this point... wel will see in January.
