Two events of the last few days make me think that the demand for Aquapolis was higher than expected:

I went to a tournament on Saturday that was supposed to be an Aquapolis draft -- 6 packs per participant. However the card shop was short. After calling around and finding no Aquapolis available the tournament became a Sealed Deck Event -- 2 packs + a Theme deck.

Today I called the organizer of a Super BattleZone event to offer my help on the day of the event. His biggest worry today was that he wasn't going to have any Aquapolis on the shelf on tourney day. He had sold out his original shipment and was getting word of backordered supplies. The last I heard he was considering going to EBAY to try to get a couple of boxes just to have them on hand.

Maybe my sample is too small to draw conclusions, but I thought it interesting that 2 different card shops are completely out. Maybe the SBZ has attracted some renewed interest? Maybe the prospect of Challenges? Or maybe a coincidence?

reduced production could also be it. With wizards stores not receiving aquapolis (at least not in my location), people are tourning to other stores to get their cards.

I truly believe at this point, Pokemon may be having a resurgence. We had a lot of negativity back in October and November because people were starting to realize nothing was going to happen for the game for a few months. Now that it's February, the Challenge Series should be announced anyday now (As it was announced last year around this time), AND with Super Battlezone coming up (which is an excellent move by WotC), I think that a lot of the people who went to another card game this winter (Most likely Yu-Gi-Oh, as it had a mall tour) are coming back.

Also, I would imagine Aquapolis is selling a lot better than Expedition is/did. I actually have only bought 3 or 4 packs of Expedition because the only cards I really needed from the set were Copycat and Strength Charm. Aquapolis, however, looks to be a really exciting set to collect AND play.

Hopefully WotC has a lot of surprises in store for 2003... because at this rate, Pokemon may look to have a 2004 and a 2005 as well. Remember... if Pokemon can continue to remain constant, when Yu-Gi-Oh fizzles out, most of their players will rejoin this game.

Aquapolis is also a much better set than Expedition. I have already told the store owners here that they should order some more boxes for SuperBattlezone, especially since I just bought one from them [Big Grin]

At End Zone they only got two boxes of it, because they didnt think it would sell well. I got a box, and a couple of other people picked up a couple of packs, that they had to reorder some more, and they are not the only shop in town that has had to do this that I know of.

York Comics and Cards where we play received their initial 2 cases(6 boxes each) of Aquapolis when the set first hit the streets and it was completely sold within the first week primarily from sales of whole boxes to York regulars. The store kept two boxes for selling singles, and as of last Saturday they were down to 1/2 box of singles. More was ordered right away but hasn't arrived yet. I'll update with whatever I can find on news of any delays. This is a great set, selling much better than Expedition from what I have seen.

I must be really lucky, my store, Coliseum of Comics where I run my league has plenty of product.

In fact, when I first heard AQ was coming out, the store asked me how many boxes he should get for my players.

Lucky, huh?

Sold out? My entire city hasn't even GOTTEN AQ yet. The only place I found with Aquapolis is Windy City Comics, and yes, they were sold out as well. My card store said they were finally getting some AQ on Friday... =/

Perhaps, because of the added costs of foils/dot-coding, the print runs of the sets since Legendary Collection have been much smaller than when foils were 1 in 3 packs? Thus, the reason for the "sell-out"? Demand is approximately the same, or even higher...but the available supply isn't as abundant as before?

Of course, that's proprietary information. [Wink]

Anyway, at least we know it's selling. It looks bad when they just sit there.

Reality Recess, the gaming store I bought my Aquapolis Box from, sold out pretty quickly. I don't know exactly how much they got in, (probably one or two cases,) but they started selling product on Friday... and were down to a single box of cards by Monday. Selling out of almost a case, possibly two, over the course of three days? I'd say that Pokémon is definately selling well, at least in the Northern Ohio area.

I strongly agree that many players are flocking back to Pokémon. (I know from experience, I convinced three to come back when SBZ was announced.) Just look at the forums here: there are more than a handful of posts from people that are "picking the game back up". It's great to see!

Of course, it also sucks when there's nothing there.

I haven't gone searching for Aquapolis for a couple weeks, being fairly content with the two theme decks and 10 booster packs I ordered online, but I hope they've actually arrived here. I need to pick up some things from Walmart sometime soon, so hopefully they'll have some.

The Wal-marts around here don't normally get the new sets in until they have been released a month or two. They are mainly focusing on YGO :/ although I try to slow the sales of it by pushing the YGO boxes behind other cards [Devilish]

Anyways maybe now that it is resurging maybe they will put the packs on the shelves a little bit faster.

Personal opinion why AQ is selling:
Its just better!!!! That Crystal Nidoking just looks cool! (Even though its not all that great [Frown] )

I haven't even seen the set in stores yet (not that that is unusual around here). But from everything I've read and heard it seems to be a good sign that the product is selling out. Even if there are less supply (not realy a bad thing for initial shipments), AQ seems to be a strong seller and a good set. Perhaps rumors and laments of death were a little premature. [Wink]

Aquapolis is a great set and the players know it.

The biggest mistake that WOTC makes is when they re-release cards (Base 2 and Legendary). Legendary hurt the sale of Pokemon. No one wants to buy cards when they are getting old stuff. And the presence of reverse holos didn't cut it.

Expedition was probably hurt by the loss of interest.

But, aquapolis is great.

If WOTC is re-releasing sets just to make their modified tournaments easier to run--that is a bad business decision. If there are old cards that they want re-issued for use in modifed--put them out as promos or provide a list of older cards that can now be used in modifed.

Anything is better than releasing a set of cards that hurts interest in the game.

I don't think Legendary hurt sales. From what I understand, that set sold well.
The crappy cards in the later Neo sets and crappy art on many of the cards, however...

Remember, the majority of the cards are bought by non-players.

But you're right about there being a lot of Gelardian/Lawrence III/whatevers out there. If anyone has an idea on how to get them playing...

You are so wrong on the BS2 and LC point Crobat. Both did extemely well. They sold very well.

We do not rerelease cards just to make tourmnaments run better.

You must remember that re-releasing cards allows you and us many opportunities that help the game and collectors.

Not everyone plays the game. In fact most people who buy the cards don't play.

New people buy these cards all the time. New players as well that don't have access to those cards.

Just using promo's for Re-releasing cards would be a very bad decision.

DMTM: Would you like to trade for the 8 packs of Legendary that I have had since Worlds and can't get rid of? If so, you'll find me at the Trading Post. At our club, the legendary packs did not sell. We normally trade some of the packs that we've won at tournaments for newer packs or single cards. They wouldn't take our legendary packs.

IMHO, the game benefits from new blood and new ideas. Legendary provided neither. I am glad to hear, though, that WOTC made money. That is important since your continued success with Pokemon is critical if this game is going to continue.

Aquapolis is a nice set for collectors as the art is much improved from previous sets. They're just really nice to look at if you don't play the game, and if you do, the supporters make it worth it. And yes, I believe more players will come back as we're all out of the "void" with SBZ coming up in about a week and the GC schedule hopefully in its final planning stages.

Anyways, back on the origional subject, today at Gamer's Edge they were sold out of Aquapolis except for two Abyss theme decks. Also, they barely had any Expedtion, about 1/4 of a box left.

SBZ is a week away and I have NO Aquapolis. That is like uncool. I can't find a place around here that sells them. Hopefully at the SBZ event I will be able to trade away yugioh cards for some Pokemon Fan Clubs.

That card is real good.
