I have a store which is willing to sponsor us.
The owner, who just took over recently, is busy. He asked if I would be the contact for it.

Looks like the format is flexible. The "Holiday" season seems like a good way to see what players arive and get a feel if league or tourney formats would be best for the players we drum up.

I need to know where to send payment and how much.
As soon as I know that I'll visit the store. (today if needed) He will send payment and get it on his schedule ASAP. (If I know who and where to send $$)

Where do I start?
Should I take the Professor test?

Dad

How many Battlezone seasons are there? How long does each season last? Can we order more kits (per season) to assure every kid gets a new promo (or is that discouraged)?

Yes! Take the Prof test! It's open book. A couple of hours studying and the proper documents open in various windows and you should be able to pass it.

If your asking if you need to take the Professor test to get the Battlezone stuff the answer is no. Your store manager needs to apply for Premier Store Status before you will be able to purchase the league kits from Wizards of the Coast.

I didn't see these questions asked before, but I may have missed them. Forgive me if I'm asking questions previously answered:

1. When will the kits be shipped to Master Professors?

2. After the initial kits are sent out, if WotC offers a program in the future and offers new kits, will they be different and contain new promos? (I realize that question may not be answerable at this time, but I was just curious! [Wink] )

Will the League Format of BattleZone be the same or different than the current League Format? Also, can a Battlezone be both tournament and league format(running league at different times than tournament)?

You will have to get the owner to apply for Premier status with WotC. This is something they should look into as it may help them with buying our products.

You should take the Prof test at least to familiarize yourself somwhat with the rules and info you will need to run events.

Looks like store is Premire member already.
It took just a little effort on my time to chat with the owner and get him to inquire. It turns out that its only 5 bucks to get a kit. I have offered my services to run it.
As soon as info arrives we will set it up around my availability.
This experience has me believing that everyone should try and ask. They could be supprised that their local store may make some time available. He was very open to Pokemon and ygo both being played.
And for you WOTC folks: It got him thinking of getting more of his Magic play organized again instead of free play and non sanctioned. He recently baught out his partners and is making improvements towards a mainly game shop.
Thanks for the help folks. I'll keep asking nuB questions here and will get a grasp of how it all works soon. Then I'll be useful to others [Smile]

So if you folks want Battle Zones in your area : GO ASK
[Bounce] It only hurts a little [Eek!]

Recall from DMTM's initial post:

If your question is ignored it means I don't have or cannot give you an answer.
I'm guessing that WoTC isn't quite ready to divulge the exact nature of their new promo structure (you can look in Thursday's chat for more info).

Does this mean all of the "Best of Game" cards are going to be like this? I was looking forward to getting all of those "broken" cards into the MMF format -- Buzz for one because half of the new archetypes are weak to it, and it's splashable.

--------------------
What, like the pro-archetype attitude is supposed to be restricted to THIS company, and THIS TCG?
All card games run on archetypes. Magic is 90% archetypes. YGO is 90% archetypes. Pokemon was, for the most part, all archetypes before and during MF2. Pokemon will be archetype-based during MF3. Pokemon will be archetype based when it is under Nintendo.

This was answered during the Chat last week. 'Buzz will start at 1. WotC is dropping the Black Star promo concept.

That is so weird. Wotc used to have 1st Edition and Black Star Promos, Japan didn't. Now Japan have 1st Edition Expedition and Black Star Promos, and Wotc stops doing it? The Pokémon World is a mysterious one indeed. ň_o

Will WOTC contact stores that were holding Pokemon Leagues and offer them to participate in BZ, or is it up to stores to contact WOTC? My store manager is interested to continue with Pokemon League but it sims to busy organizing Yugioh tournaments to remember to contact WOTC. His impression is that nothing's going to happen before January anyway.

I just visited the new Battlezone site (no info is up yet, but still) -- and I saw what I feel is a very disturbing link:

"This Month's Format"

Even if run as a League, there will be certain cards allowed/not allowed? This holds two possiblities:

1. Formats will consist of sanctionable formats only -- and since not all stores would be able to run Drafts, that leaves Unlimited, Modified, and TMP. TMP is questionable because (1) there are so many rules questions and (2) Some people may not have a friend with them to coordinate decks with. For the sake of this topic, we'll say that TMP isn't a format -- and that Unlimited/Modified are the two choices for formats.

Modified tournaments would consist of a few major archetypes and many, many kids who may not know what cards are legal. Once those kids are taught, it will still only consist of a few major archtypes.

Unlimited tournaments would consist of a slightly larger number of archetypes and some rogue decks.

As for Leagues -- and as described earlier, the promos are given to the player who racks up the highest point toal/win count:

Modified Leagues -- people that want the promos badly enough will play decks built to either win or lose fast -- just get points annd get on with the next game. (A certain legendary dog and a snail-like creature come to mind here...)

Unlimited Leagues -- We've seen this before. This is pretty much how the League system is now -- an Unlimited event. (Well, at least around here.) As I posted several months ago, when League Year 3's system of rewards was posted, it was noted that players who played very quick games, despite their means (as long as they were legal), would earn high seeding in the tournament, and thus, an easier time...

...but under this system the FTK-type games ARE the tournament, making that speed worth oh-so-much more in terms of promos.

2. We see formats that have never been sanctioned as formats for the League. Since BattleZone can be run as a tournament, I can only assume this would be a League-only option of anything. I mean...no rares, Gym block, things of this nature. (I personally don't see this happening as it may be difficult for people without major resources to make decks every month for new formats.) It makes a very interesting proprosition as a League, as it forces the players who grew up with the Erika's Jiggly FTK League deck to play other things.

My main question is this: Is "this month's format" a MANDATE -- or is it up to the store owner/League leader to use the format or a different one?

--------------------

This was also covered in the chats/Professor Emails. The Format du Jour will be the "recommended" format of the month. This is to introduce booster drafts, sealed deck, etc to the great unwashed masses. Again, it's RECOMMENDED, not MANDATED that the tournaments be run under the Format du Jour (as WotC will not be providing stock for limited events with the kits).

The League component will most likely run as it has in the past, no restrictions on card pools as it is casual, fun play.

CPU, though you make some good points I think you may have the wrong end of the stick..

'recommended Format' reads to me as a way of increasing the variety of play styles through education and prompting. Maybe some will be fun formats but I suspect the majority of sugesstions will be sanctionable. Those of us who mostly play modified will be encouraged to play unlimited and vice-versa.

Players won't try different play styles unless they are encouraged to do so. Will we ever get CPU to play modified for an extended period of time???

Another way of looking at BattleZone is to ask the question: How do we encourage MORE competative play?

--------------------
========================================
'Good News' or 'Bad News' but NOT NO NEWS

some people brag about their tournament results, me I'm gonna brag??? about what players have managed to get past me LOL

-------Hoodwinked---(things I won't get wrong again...)------

'legal stalling' : game loss at least
'only joking' on misreported match results: DQ Yep its that serious!

DaytonGL: Thank you for putting my mind at ease. I have a group of 4 people (self included) that plan on running a BattleZone -- will probably go with the Format of the month as long as it's not a series of Modified-Modified-Modified-Modified-Modified-OMG look Unlimited!-Modified-Modified...

Yes, you can get me to play MMF. I play it on Apprentice a lot and will play it IRL should the need arise. (Tourney, etc.) What you can NOT do is make me pull the Enteis, Magcargos, Dark Feraligatrs, Slowkings, etc...(and soon to be Kingdras) out of my decks. [Devilish]
