In the WotC Vault there is a list of "Dead" WotC TCGs:

C*23
Battletech
Doomtown
Dune
Hercules
Legend of the Burning Sands
Netrunner
Rage
Vampire: The Eternal Struggle
Xena

Anyone out there who played (plays?) any of them and if so, where did things go wrong? Especially, what has the Pokémon TCG got that these haven't?

from a few friends who tried the "vault" games, I have heard good comments about Netrunner. However it, like legend of the five rings, vanished off the Earth after its 15 minutes of fame.

L5R dead who says so?

look at http://l5r.alderac.com/ I think you'll find it's very much alive just not a wotc game anymore..

As for the rest well...

NetRunner fantastic game but too complicated for mass market appeal. Probably the best CCG I have played that and Last Crusade.

Battletech great game licensed product .. died when due to lack of support and poor player base

C*23
Hercules
Xena

Bad games designed to cash in or dumb down MtG for newbies.

Legend of the Burning Sands and Rage - never played can't say

Vampire: The Eternal Struggle - erm not dead again gone back home really to white wolf http://www.white-wolf.com/vtes/

So some died .. WotC owned or in the case of BattleTech when the lot went belly up too.

And some survive by going home from where they were invented or licensed. Maybe the future for Pokemon?

Anyway all speculation .. remember chickens and heads.. and the sky is yet to be falling.

Then there's Harry Potter, which will sadly make the vault, as its product value has gone WAY down (15 dollar booster boxes, anyone?)
*Gulp* better add another to "The box"
(so now sneasel and slowking have a whole new group of playthings! [Evil Smirk] )

You've forgot the Simpsons. And I haven't seen a $15 booster box, but I've seen a $25 one.

Thanx, ukpokemonpro! You've been busy in the TCG dept... [Wink]

Maybe I should rephrase my questions now...
As we all know, the Pokémon TCG has it's deficiencies (poor balance between colours; cards initially released in Japan, to (hopefully) fit the Japanese format and then brought into a different enviroment in the rest of the world), but is still a success - why?
Is it because of the initial fad that ment that the game achieved "critical mass" so that it could spread and survive? Is the Pokémon TCG better than C*23, Hercules & Xena games or is it "living on borrowed time"?
Or is Pokémon a very good game despite it's flaws and Battletech was just unlucky not to go through the "fad stage" and generate enough players to survive, while NetRunner was too complicated?

As for the "living" WotC games I guess that Harry Potter might enter the "Vault" pretty soon by the sounds of it - Magic the Gathering IS complicated but STILL a huge success (again, why?)...

One of these TCG's I know a good bit about, because I still collect and play.

Rage TCG produced by Wotc is a "reworked" version of the old White Wolf TCG also called Rage. When Rage first came out it was kind of popular, but the TCG from White Wolf lacked enough rules and many decks just became too "broken" to be any fun. The Wotc Rage TCG improved on this greatly, and it's really a *GREAT* card game to play - Especially if you like battling werewolf tribes. The art is also very cool. [Wink]

In my opinion this game lost popularity because there wasn't much to back it up, unless you were already a fan of the White Wolf RPG or novels. There are still many players of the Wotc Rage, and most are extremely devoted fans of the series. Rage is also a slowly growing TCG, with new fans discovering it on a regular basis. The main problem with that these days, is Rage from Wotc is almost *impossible* to find in stores, especially any of the later sets.
