The format is Unlimited Constructed and it's non-sanctioned ('natch - so the WOTC folks can play!). Of course, it will be fun playing the Master Trainers in and of itself. The challenge will be to make the game play itself more interesting and enable it to rise above the same old standard archetypes...

First question: Anybody know if this will be Swiss or single elimination? Match play or regular single game? I'm trying to figure out how worried I need to be about FTKO's.

Second question: What kind of deck are you going to play? Not looking for decklists or anything, but here's my thinking - do I:

1) build the meanest, toughest, FTKO, BBP, Haymaker deck, and try to vanquish all opponents in as straightforward and brutal a manner as possible?

or do I:

2) build a clever, out of the ordinary, thinking-out-of-the-box, tricky/subtle/elegant deck, and hope that when I play one of the WOTC folks that they will reward my unusual brilliance with an extraordinary bounty prize?!? (perhaps maybe even if I lose?)

What do you think? I'd especially welcome any comments from DMTM, MTM, or the other potential WOTC players.

Well...I can't go to worlds, waay too far from Northeast Ohio for me, but if I were to go, I'd play light golduck. With a pluspower, he can eat a sneasel with a dark, or a Jiggly with a recycle/dce. I anticipate at least half of the decks played will either contain sneasel or wiggly (or both. [Bored] ) I dunno about the trainers/energy, but the pokemon would look like this:

4 Psyduck - Fossil - Headache first turn = Mean
3 Light Golduck
3 Cleffa
2 Chansey - I'd be playing DCE with duck anyway.
1 Mr. Mime - Screw with Stuff
1 Erika's Dratini - See Mr. Mime
1 Mew - Lillypad Promo - See E's Drat and Mime

and a buncha no removal gym.

Why Unlimited?

I dunno...but that's what I'd play.

Well, I'm going and here are my options:

-Sneasel/Slowking (I probably ain't going use this)

-Clefable Hay

-Raindance (Right...with all the Electabuzzes and Rocket Zapdos out there, it would be suicide)

Guess that I may have to play Clefable by default... [Mad]

I am playing with a mix deck: Fire/Fighting/dark/colorlus.
Its a sneasel/clefaible mix with hitmonchan, charizard, machamp and elekid. Its a great deck but it will need speed. Ill have it ready for worlds.

Hhhm... Can it work, Firefighter? I mean Charizard AND Machamp... Should be interesting to say the least. I'll prolly play this Clefable deck I have. Can beat Sneasel and Zappy pretty well, that 'Fable.

I'm looking towards a lot of Sneasel decks. Maybe a lot of Steel Chansey. Wiggly will probably poke his head in there. Rogue Hays are what I think will win.

Sorry, can't help you on type of tournament... I was wondering that myself. Also, what time do you think we will be there until?

Hey...my advice:

Try to make the fastest deck possible. The bounties are going to be worth going after...enough so that you want to get as many as you can. If I were you, I'd make a few decks:

1. An FTK deck. ESPECIALLY if Expedition is readily available so you can get 4 Power Shards. Erika's Jiggly + 4 Pluspower + 4 Power Shard = evil.

2. A Clefable/something or Wiggly/deck. This one will be for the long haul.

3. A quick hay. Why not?

In this format, speed kills (your opponent) so just make a few decks and see if you can win a whole lot of bounties really fast.

--------------------
What, like the pro-archetype attitude is supposed to be restricted to THIS company, and THIS TCG?
All card games run on archetypes. Magic is 90% archetypes. YGO is 90% archetypes. Pokemon was, for the most part, all archetypes before and during MF2. Pokemon will be archetype-based during MF3. Pokemon will be archetype based when it is under Nintendo.

Viva la unoriginality!

Expedition is not going to be available...except at the pre-release tournament...so putting those cards into one's deck is a moot point.

The tournament is a Swiss Unlimited Constructed. I believe it will last two days, like the Main Event. I believe it is one-game swiss as well but do not take that offically.

As in terms of bounty, if you win you might get the chioce of which promo you want. They might even have square cut base set holos. Even if you lose I'll bet you'll get a promo (their choice) for just battling them. This is what they did back in the Qualifer in Seattle for Open Players for the ECSTS 2001. But this could have changed, who knows?

Deck designs are still being tested. (I have about 16 in the running). Oh for anyone out of town like myself, get reservations now! Flights range $300-500. I was even lucky to capture a one-stop trip to Seattle for $298 from Delta. Close range hotels are ranging from $70-150 a night. So except for food, transportation, and tournament money. My trip is already at about $900.

As I understand it right now, this is how I think the bounties will work. Everyone will be entered into the tournament - the MTs, WotC staff and Professors. As the pairings come up, a Professor might be pared with someone that has a bounty on them. If the Professor wins that match, they claim the bounty. It will be a little something extra to make the journey to T8 more interesting. [Wink]

I'd play a "Make the MT Run Screaming" Deck:

4 X Ditto
4 X Brock's Vulpix
4 X Brock's Ninetales

4 X Lt. Surge's Secret Plan

4 X Rainbow Energy

and some other cards...

BJJ763 : Hi MTM, let's battle
MTM: OK
BJJ763: I play Ditto on the Bench
MTM : *groan*
BJJ763: I play another Ditto on the Bench
MTM : *groan*
BJJ763 : I evolve Brock's Vulpix to Brock's Ninetales
MTM : *groan*
BJJ763 : I LSSP this card to my Bench
MTM : That's it! I give up! Here's your bounty now go away!!!!

Wiggly's and Clefables? My Tyrogues laughing histarically.

Recycle Energy? Pokemon Tower + energy removal = a dead recycle energy in the discard.

It wont be as easy as many of you think.

As I told a few heavy hitter WotC players, I might play:

1. Slowking/Steel Chansey/Blissey deck, perhaps I will put a couple of Sneasals in for fun. [Devilish]

2. Hmmm, remember that Trap Deck at Towsen, MD ECSTS 2001 Qualifier DMTM. Perhaps I will modify that deck and bring it. [ROFL]

3. Oh, "The Ladies Man" deck [Love] Shoot, I forgot, faked cards are not allowed [Frown]

4. Clefable/Ditto/Sneasal

5. Hmmm, Muk/Sneasal

6. Oh, there are too many to choose from. Perhaps I will play a Rocket-on deck and modify it for unlimited. They seem to do well.

Whatever?

, Doesn't this mean that someone could go through the tourney without ever battle anyone from WotC staff, and therefore never even have a chance at gettng a bounty?

Sensei, you can't play "The Ladies' Man" Deck since you have only one of those specially made (thank you Purity and Eck) "The Ladies Man" card. We have four of them to put into our deck. Now to get WotC to make [Love] Energies. [ROFL]

CPU: the Erika's Jiggly Trap deck is a lot of fun. Just make sure you include one Goop Gas to turn off Erika's Dratini Power. However, with all those little Cleffas running around, pulling off multiple traps can be a [Eek!] ing pain.

jdb728: You got it. I would assume that there might be about:

1. DMTM
2. MTM
3. Steve (DAT)
4. MTWill
5. Keirin
6. MTPat

Plus a lot of others who play the MTMs during their lunch hours from Customer Service, a requirement of their boss, DMTM. [ROFL]

So there might be as many as 20 WotC employees.

The bounty I want is the one where the MTs take care of our boys for a night so we (wife and I with several friends) can go on a sun set sailboat cruise. [ROFL]
