Hi Professors,
This is a follow-up to the email I sent out yesterday.
As you hopefully know, the virus W32.KLEZ was uploaded to our list on Friday 7/12/02 just before 7:00 AM. I'm quite sure that this was due to an attack on one of our member's computers, and not a malicious attack on our group. The infected email will contain two files. The first will be the KLEZ virus, the second will be a random file chosen from the infected machine. The subject of the email will be random, so I can't tell you exactly what to look for. If you execute the attached file, you WILL have the virus and MUST clean your system. A free scanner and cleaner for this virus is available from Symantec. Use the following link to retrieve them:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]
Again, I'm sure this was NOT an attack on our group, but rather the virus spreading itself from one of our members' PCs. That said, it is quite evident that at least one Professors' machine is infected. This virus is very hot and will spread itself through email and networks.
If you have any questions, feel free to email me. My address is on the professors list.
