If you don't have any basic or baby pokemon in your opening hand but have a Mysterious fossil that is a mulligan right? I think it is or else you would just about automaticly lose if this situation occured. I just need absolute proof. Thanks [ May 20, 2003, 10:25 PM: Message edited by: Pidgeotto Trainer ]

See these rulings from the COMPENDIUM for your answer:
quote: Q. Can you play a Mysterious Fossil as your starting pokemon? A. No. You _cannot_ start with Mysterious Fossil as one of your Pokemon. It is a trainer card. You can't play trainers during your setup. [ED. NOTE: This is different than what is published in the Fossil expansion FAQ; this newer ruling now takes precedence.] (Jun 20, 2002 WotC Chat, Q101; Jul 11, 2002 WotC Chat, Q23 & Q63)
Q. Can you place Clefairy Doll during setup? A. Nope, just like with Mys. Fossil. It is not a Pokemon you can start with. You may not start with a trainer card as one of your starting Pokemon. (Jul 18, 2002 WotC Chat, Q10 & Q31)
Q. If you have a Clefairy Doll or Mysterious Fossil in hand, can you mulligan? Or are you forced to play it because it counts as a basic Pokémon. A. You can mulligan because it doesn't count as a Basic Pokémon when it's in your hand. (April 27, 2000 WotC Chat Q143)
Q. If a Mysterious Fossil is the only "basic" card you have at the start of a game, does it count as a Basic or do you have to shuffle and try again? A. You have to reshuffle, it counts as a Trainer card when it is in your hand. (Feb 10 WotC Chat)

Note, though, that the new "Ancient Fossil" (I think that's it's name) from Skyridge is a Basic Pokemon and would have to be played at startup if it were the only Basic in your hand!

Thanks SteveP. The point about Buried Fossil being an actual pokemon at the beginning is why I'm gonna be using Mysterious fossil. 3 Days til SBZ.
