Well, you know these various things:

How many cards are in your opponent's hand
How many cards are in your opponent's deck
How many/what is in your opponent's discard pile.

So, what are DCI/Nintendo rulings on this? If you ask your opponent one of the previous questions, must they deliver without argument, or only on their own consent? I have been having several problems with this in my area recently, so I would like to know.

Here is one answer from the Compendium...

Q. Some players freely examine their own discard pile (or their opponent's) whenever they want. Is this allowed? Or can a discard pile only be examined when you have official business there (like after playing Item Finder).
A. Discard piles are open knowledge (either player could look through them). (April 6, 2000 WotC Chat Q97)

The cards in the discard pile are public knowledge as well as the number of cards in your or your opponent's hand and deck.......

As long as you aren't using the query to stall, your opponent has the obligation to comply.

so, if i ask an opponent the number of cards in their hand, to know if it is a good time to play a copycat or something like that, they have to tell me? I thought they were allowed to keep it a secret (by closing their cards behind one another in the hand or something like that) until it is required to know (example: Copycat).

I'm not aware of any such rule allowing you to do so-it's public information.

Yep, public info.
Same thing with "hiding" cards in play under other cards.

I always spread them out a bit if I see someone keeping their energy cards "hidden" like that.

Ouch! >_<

That last one is something that I see needing a lot of work... and unfortunately, I am one of the guily parties. Force convenience of the owner, it's easier to stack all of your cards together, particulary with tehr eis a lot of retreating going on. For your opponent, it is easier if you keep your cards pread out and organized; I prefer keeping all my energy on the right side of my active and any tools on it too the left. The bench is the tricky part though-I try to keep the energies and tools spread out either in front of or behind the card.

And the moment your hand leaves their pokemon, this player stacks all energies, focus bands and gold berries back up underneath the pokemon. All future attachments are placed squarely underneath, just as all the past ones.
