Once again, I lost to a Steelix deck in the finals at my tourney. I have Smoochum and Magmar teched in to combat him, but I faced a Steelix with four metals attached, and my Smoochum in the prizes.
What are some other good cards, combos, to deal with Steelix? It seems like every other player at my SBZ was running him. Three of my four losses were to Steelix decks (the other one was to Crobat, my Donphan's weakness).

Cards that Combat Steelix. I assume you are talking about Genesis one, but they are all the same once it has 3-4 Metal Energy on it. Now here are some ways to deal with all 3 that I have found
SER2- Well this is a Riscky card, but when used properly it is a win or not win situation. Send up a Baby with no Energy, or Recycle, and Flip away. 2 Heads will obliterate a Steelix. No attack for 2 turns, and cant just retreat away without help
Unown M- No Stealix can do much when it looses 30 damage from its attack, especially Genesis. It does 0 or 20 on a flip. AQ can only damage with its second attack. Dont rememebr what SR does, but -30 will slow it too
Smeargle Promo- Well, this wont hurt SR to much, but Painting a heavily Metal Energied Stealix to another color, basically has same effect as Unown M. It cant do much damage, and Metals are worthless on it. But with SR power, it changing color doesnt botehr it, it doesnt need real Metal energy anyways.
Any pokemon with energy removal capibilty. just discard the Metal.

If you are running into a lot of Steelix, first card is Unown M. Next, find a good fire tech or something to remove those Metal nrg from him.. Steelix is a beast, but can be dealt with.. If running grass decks.. Magnifier works well against a steelix.. other than that.. Poison is a must have for the beast... Confusion can work if running Psychic decks which is Promo Mew Territory for sure... best thing to do though is make them waste their Warp Energy adn such early game.. it is hard to do but not impossible.. Status, Status, Status is the best way with dealing with a Steelix that is fully powered.. Or SER2 with good luck works
That is about it.. chip away at him til he is gone..

I tried using a Gligar with Stun Poison to knock him out and poison, but didn't get the flips. What's Unown M do?

well apart from big fire, there is always Light Golduck and the new Skyridge Starmie. Both are good at taking out special energy intensive pokémon

a WONDERFUL tech card for anti-steelix is skyridge flareon.. it has worked wonders in my beedrill deck.. and since it really only requires colorless, it can work with any deck and if you do discard a fire energy card, it can deal 100 damage to a steelix... without taking metal into account..still...it does slow steelix down and makes the person think twice about using it...

Why Steelix (and now Scizor) is so good (besides the obvious) is there is no really good tech-card. Unown M is just waiting to be ZZapped by Pichu or Double Gusted and Ko'd by Steelix's Water partner. (usually water) Entei/Cargo will beat Steelix when it doesn't have a water friend near by. The best though is Light Dragonite especially now with Boost Energy. You can combine anything you want with the Dragon, even a steelix of your own. I may play this now that I've seen Scizor's power with that evil Furret.

Try the Promo Magmar combo with the Scorching Whilwind charizard. Turn all your Pokemon's energy into R and use Magmar's attack, which is similar to Magcargo's, except it's from ALL of your Pokemon, and does 10+ for each one discarded.

The decks I play put up a nice fight against Steelix if not taking him down. Pyschic deck- Light Golduck and Espeon and Promo Mewtwo do a rather nice job. Grass deck- Meganium (Pokemon Power- doubles G energy on Grass pokemon) Exeggutor's called shot hits bench and doesnt apply Resistance or Weakness, and the New Starmie does the same as Light Golduck (30+ 10 for each Special).

Thanks, guys, I found that I had an Unown M in my card box that I'll be putting in my tourney deck from now on. I've been looking at the Starmie and will probably put that in my next deck. I've tried using a Gengar deck (one of my faves, obviously) to move damage to Steelix, but it never seems to have enough punch to knock him out, perhaps the Starmie will be enough to do that. This is very deck specific, but since it works so well and invloves a new card, I'll emntion it. I played a Steelix deck at the Iowan SBZ and lost... and heres why. My anti-Steelix strategy was sound: I ran a deck taht utilized the new Wobbuffet and LC Alakzam. Well, a firend of mine picked up a box of Skyridge and let me borrow the new Skyridge Alakazam. Steelix hates this card. It has Psychic for CCC doing the usual 30+. It also has a useful power, Energy Jump, which lets you move one energy from one Pokemon to another once per turn. In my deck, with LC Alakazm backing it up, Steelix would have no hope: it can't OHKO Kazam, and I can keep scooping damage onto my Wobbuffets. On its own, it could still Energy Jump an energy to an undamaged Pokemon, retreat (it only takes two), get healed by a Pokemon Center, add a new energy, then next turn attach a second energy and energy jump the 3rd one over and start attacking again. Slow, but effective. However, all my ABra's were in my prizes, so it didn't work for me... -_- Oh, and if a person uses non-Metal, its even better.

Man oh man - Steelix thread!
There are several ways to beat steelix, most of them ineffective.
The first, is promo Mew. It cannot be hurt by Steelix, and can confuse the big metal beast. Does not stop it, but slows it down.
Second, and my choice of Tech, is Promo Smeargle. Anyone who discounts this card as tech has never seen a painted Steelix. Water is usually my color of choice in my Meganium and Jumpluff decks.
Third. Big Fire. I am beginning to run "psycho" combinations, such as Magcargo/NR Kindgra which are effective. Have a Charizard/Jumpluff deck in the works too! Big fire is so underrated, even in this, the era of Kabutops. Big fire just needs protection.
Fourth - Light Golduck or Starmie - good pokemon that turn the tables on Steelix.
Fifth - Energy Removal2 / Pokemon Tower (lock those energy in)
Sixth, play a deck that hits hard enough to ignore steelix, such as lightning cube, eggs, feraligatr, Kabutops. The big guy can be taken down, and he really does not hit that hard (30 or 50)
Seventh - E-Alakazam with Syncroblast - 80 for 3. Metal or not, that hurts!
Eighth - and only as a last resort, Unknown M. This card can be exposed by Murkrow! Lock and M and watch your opponent cry. Also is pichu bait (what isn't these days?)
Enjoy, have fun, and find your own way. Everyone has the way they enjoy to get around steelix. Use what works with your style. If you like the unknown, use it! If you like Promo Smeargle (which I do) then use it!
Go for it!
Meganium45
Those are my suggestions. I am sure there are more.

I use the new skyridge ledian with it's swift for 50 to take care of those nasty pokemon with resistance to grass and or metal energies. that, along with some poisoning effects (esp triple poison beedril) and even the mightest of steelix will cringe.
