Crystal Energy work similar as a Rainbow Energy card except:
1. It don't do self damage (Good) 2. It only provide the same type of energy that the other attached BASIC energy card provided. If only the Crystal Energy is attached, it only provide colorless. (Bad)
In my opinion, I would prefer Rainbow than the Crystal energy because:
1. It make this difficult (or impossible. Remember Ho-oh's "Type of Basic Energy Card"? I have to look at the text again to see if Porygon 2 work for Crystal. Edit: probably not) to provide Darkness and Metal energy, as there is no Basic energy card for Darkness and Metal. 2. When I need a type of energy, I need at least 1 basic energy card of that type already attached. I can't do first turn Sword Dance (Scyther) by Crystal energy. In multi-color deck, attaching correct energy on-time is critical. I believe even doing 10 damage, Rainbow is still better than Crystal. [ January 21, 2003, 07:28 AM: Message edited by: DOMCGI ]

its use- alot of the newer pokemon have pokebodys that you can not attach the engery required to them or if you do you must discard an engery, so the trick is to get just 1 engery on it and then attach the crystal engery. its basicly an any color engery - good for those pokemon that have a (*) attack then a (*)(X) [where X=any color]

I got 2000 or so in Kinglers day. I got 7 in Rapadash's dash. Butterfree's Flower Power 4700. 123 In Jumping Dodoro. My all foil deck is finished.

I agree with DOMCGI's assessment of Crystal Energy. It could possibly find value in multi-basic energy decks, but it's inability to copy Metal/Dark and it's inability to stand alone make it nearly useless in serious competition. Rainbow is much better, and the new Warp and Boost Energies in Aquapolis will see MUCH greater use than Crystal Energy in serious competition.

After check the wording from the Ho-oh and the Crystal energy card, I would say Crystal Energy will work in the same condition as the Ho-oh's Rainbow Burn attack.
Ho-oh Rainbow Burn: .... each "type of Basic Energy Card" ....
Crystal Energy: .... all "type (Color) of Basic Energy Cards" ....
So Crystal Energy will look for the original type of a Basic Energy Card.
If Porygon 2 convert a Grass Basic Energy Card to provide Fire energy, Crystal Energy will only provide Grass Energy.
Note: above is only my rule and is not an official rule. Could someone confirm this in the Chat?

WEll no one asked...
But Crystal energy would be "good" for those Aquapolis Pokémon that are tough to get energy onto. Zapdos comes to mind. You would first have to get an L onto it then you could freely use Crystal Energy.
