Over the last couple of days I have been noticing a common trend. I am seeing a lot of Modified "Haymaker" type decks. For those of you who do not know what a Haymaker is, it is a deck conceived early in the game's beginnings. Typically, it consists of powerful Basic Pokemon, disruptive Trainers, speed, and lower energy counts. Thus you have powerful Basic Pokemon attacking on just the necessary energy while your opponent scrambles for options after losing their hands (Lass), or Energy (ER/SER). Why does this deck work so effectively? Well, because compared to Modified, there's more speed in Unlimited and there are no definite powerhouses, with the slight exception to Sneasel which can be countered.

In Modified, however, I don't see this deck working. There are just too many powerful Pokemon. The only way that this type of deck can work is if your Pokemon can attack the weaknesses of your opponent. (IE: Your Electabuzz attacking an opponent's Electric-weak Water). Speaking of Electabuzz (Base), this is the reason why I believe that Haymakerish type decks are reemerging in Modified. Electabuzz is the first Promo of BattleZone, and is the best Basic Pokemon ever released, at least in my opinion. Again, I do not see these decks working. The main reason is these Basic Pokemon do not have enough HP to last very long against the opponent. Also with no evolutions, it's hard for these Pokemon to evolve out of status. Lastly, the most difficult aspect of these decks is the energy. Using seperate energy can lead to a headache of problems. My best advice to those who are testing with these decks are to big a solid Stage one, and use some powerful backup.

The Following Pokemon are some of the "Haymaker" Pokemon I am talking about:
Water: Mantine (Destiny)
Electric: Electabuzz (BattleZone)
Grass: Scyther (Promo)
Fire: Magmar (Genesis)
Psychic: Mewtwo (Expedition)
Fighting: Tyrogue/Hitmon families

You can even include Murkrow and Expedition Skarmory in these types of decks. Well, good luck to those of you testing these decks, and as always, thank you for reading.

Glad you're back... COOL articles.

I've wondered about this and AND AM not scared.
70 HP just DOES not cut it in Modified.

BUT do you know where I may see its use?

I don't think that a "Modified Haymaker" can cut it, but there is potential for a Potpourri/ Haymaker. Potpourri decks (pardon my spelling) use several different types of Pokemon and match Weakness/Resistance to win. I am ot sure if they have to be "Haymakers" by definition (that is, all basics) but that is the easiest way to do it. I have tested a few Potpourri decks. If they set up quick enough and/or can type-match, they tend to do quite well. We also have Magnifier, something that would have been nice in the old days, for those worst case scenarios. I don't think they will be able to dominate, as they did in Unlimited, but they may be come viable... or they may be a complete waste. I see things that could lead to both.
