If Hypno uses Spiral Aura against a defending Pokemon that has a focus band--what happens to the "effect" of Spiral Aura.

Normally, Spiral Aura would allow you to gust up one of your oppenent's Pokemon--so long as you don't knock out the defending Pokemon. What if the damage done to the defending Pokemon would knock the Pokemon out--thus, triggering the focus band.

The problem is the order. According to my rule books--effects of attacks occur before a focus band is applied. It therefore seems to me that you lose the option of gusting up an opponent's Pokemon because you don't learn that the defending Pokemon wasn't knocked out until "between turns".

Crobat2 diagrees with me. He agrees that the gusting of a benched Pokemon occurs during the turn and therefore occurs before the focus band is flipped--but he thinks that I should always be allowed to gust up a benched Pokemon because there was no knockout since the knockout was delayed.

Has this been ruled on?

I believe that sine the attacks switching of the Pokemon occurs AFTER you make sure the Defending is Knocked out, so I think that, when it would be knocked out, you'd flip for focus band, then, if it was not KOed, you'd activate the effect from Spiral Aura.

Dark Llama: That makes perfect sense to me--and that is what I would have ruled--until I reread the rules. It now appears to me that the rules are very clear that effects are the last step of events that occur during the attack. Tools such as focus band occur in between turns.

The KO-check (when figuring out attack damage and attack side-effects) is always done in the step immediately before any attack side-effects are applied. If the Pokemon is KO'd after this step resolves, then any attack side-effects are ignored. Focus Band is a triggered response to a KO and gets resolved in the KO-check step. So, if the Pokemon survives the KO-check step because of a successful Focus Band flip, then the attack side-effects are applied (if any).

OK, this is confusing, but that's how DMTM once explained the KO-check step to me.

** ADDITIONAL COMMENT **

Focus Band NEVER triggers in between turns because it's a response to a KO by an attack. There is actually one case I can think of were the Focus Band is triggered AFTER the KO-check step. It was ruled that a KO resulting from Perish Song's effect triggers Focus Band.
