Possibly my favourite pokemon cards to play with are the 'shining' pokemon. This is due to their fun attacks, interesting energy requirements and them all being basics.
Personally, I believe shining mewtwo is the most viable for gameplay, followed closely be noctowl (seeing as they can both run in a psychic/lightning deck)
I am interested to read people's views on the shining poke's and what they use them for, and when.
For a gameplay point of view, here are my top 5 in rank order:
mewtwo noctowl gyrados kabutops tyranitar (followed closely by raichu)
ever played an all shining deck with a 4-4-4 line of cleffa/clefairy and expedition (moonlight poke power!) in it??? works pretty well actually.
maybe the new furret will be a good supporter for shining pokemon (helps steelix and tyranitar...)

Actaully, I think Kabutops deserves less, and Riachu deserves higher, maybe the best. Personally I like Mewtwo the best though, then T-tar, then Riachu, Celibi is really good for Status effects as well as Noctowl!! Actually I havent tried an all shiney deck with the new Clefable, I used an Unlimeted Metro-Fable, with Rainbow Burn Ho-oh and Porigon 2. That way it didnt matter what energy I attached.
My best deck was a Raindance/Riptide/Energy Conversion deck with Red Gyardos. The idea was simple, Get Stoise, 2 Pori2's and RG up and going, using Riptide to retreive all those waters I converted to fire with Pori2's. His second attack is devastating when teamed like this, using it every turn

I like the red gyrados idea! will have to try that.
I actually like celebi too, but its HP puts me off big time. near guaranteed status is nice though.
I have to admit, raichu once running is cool. And we must'nt forget miracle energy which can be a god send for some of those shinings if played right.
miracle for tyranitar's destructive fire, for raichus bench damage, for gyrados's devastate, for kabutops water slash, and even a surprise psyblast from mewtwo.
hey MTM, will we EVER get shining mew in english?!

I have a shining deck; it's very fun to use.
Mewtwo is the best shining by far, then kabutops or noctowl. The worst is charizard. Shining pokemon are pretty underated in my opinion. [ February 28, 2003, 12:42 AM: Message edited by: Alakazam700 ]

Thanx to EX Venusaur (Harvest Bounty) Charizard is not the worst anymore, thouhgh he still comes in a close second. That Shiney Steelix is last, an Iffy attack that you cant use last turn regardless of damage or not, and it requires 2 special energy??? forget that, least Zard can do 100, and possible not hurt itsel (I may be wrong, it has been a whiel, but I think Zard was flip, if tails 30 to itself, am I wrong?)

Your absolutly right Spectreon there are plenty of energy support cards for zard, but steelix's attack is just plain bad.

the only way I would use Steelix again is with the is with something like EX Drafonite, at least I suppose that retreating back to the bench, then bringing it active again would allow you to use it 2 turns in a row, maybe not. Still with the flip envolved, it is not really worth playing.

Which is the best? Shining Raichu. It's a guaranteed Baby killer, and, it can go in a Lanturn deck, since they both can benefit from the Lightning and Water types.

hey there!
thats a cool idea for shining steelix!
steelix + dragonite.
I am DEFINITELY gonna try that for fun.
finally a slightly competitive way to use steelix.
maybe a steelix/dragonite/aqua furret deck???

Combo with mostly an Lanturn, and you have lots of damage with lots of Water Energy. It's like a Water Gun that never stops!

shining tyranitar could even go in an expedition charizard deck!
just play fighting energy, and if neccessary, use destructive fire thanks to zard's power.
here's a question:
if i have an expedition zard in play and am using a shining zard with 5 lightning attached, could i still use white hot flame thanks to expedition zard???

I use Light Azumarill's Bubble jump with Shining Raichu, and energy switch. It's really a baby killer when you have 3 water on it, but it needs too much energy to attack.

Shining Pokemon are a very interesting genre to play. Kind of reminds me of YGO's exodia decks, only weak/clunky. From best to worst, here is how I'd rank the 10 Shinings:
In playability:
1: Noctowl 2: Mewtwo 3: Raichu 4: Tyranitar 5: Gyarados 6: Kabutops 7: Celebi 8: Magikarp 9: Steelix 10: Charizard
In "Value":
1: Charizard 2: Tyranitar 3: Mewtwo 4: Steelix 5: Gyarados 6: Raichu 7: Celebi 8: Kabutops 9: Noctowl 10: Magikarp
Overall rating for both qualities:
1: Mewtwo: 17 Points (balanced high) 2: Tyranitar: 16 Points (balanced high) 3: Raichu: 13 Points (Slightly more playable) 4: Noctowl: 12 Points (more playable) 4: Gyarados: 12 Points (balanced high med) 6:Charizard: 11 Points (more popular) 7: Steelix (balanced med) 8: Kabutops: 8 Points (ranges) 8: Celebi: 8 Points (ranges) 10: Magikarp: 4 Points (balanced low)

I would think Magicrap (perpously spelled wrong btw) would actually be the worst. Wish mew would come out, it would be so great and works with shiney Mewtwo and Noctowl (Fire/Electric/Psychic for attacks). Vague memory on transalation, but 1st attack for 1 Electric- look at top 3 cards of deck, shoose 1 shuffle deck, second was 1 Psy, 1 Fire- Discard the fire or attack does nothing (no metronome, hehe). Flip a coin heads is either confused or paralyzed, tails is either Confused or Alseep and the attack does 20.
I could be completey wrong, but that was the translation I found a while back, I just cant remeber the status effects on heads/tails flip.

Magikarp has a tradition for being utter crap, but Charizard's is even greater. Tells you what I think of most Charizards (Except the Exp fast Charizard and Dark. Those are good ).
Anyways, I am inspired to make an all-shinings deck right now! Hehehehe
