Okay, my friend wanted to know why spikes get stopped if your opponets pokemon has a steel energy attached. He says that steel energy blocks all attacks and the power is not an attack, just a power. He thinks because it is a power, that it is not classified as an attack and will get through a steel energy.

Wrong, Steel energy stops Damage, nothing is in there about attacks.
From the Card Referance
quote: Metal Energy Energy Special Energy Card Damage done to the Pokémon Metal Energy is attached to is reduced by 10 (before applying Weakness and Resistance). If the Pokémon Metal Energy is attached to isn't {M}, whenever it damages a Pokémon, reduce that damage by 10 (after applying Weakness and Resistance). Metal Energy provides {M} Energy. (Doesn't count as a basic Energy card.)
It states that "Damage Done" is reduced by ten. This is why it'll stop anything that states "Does Damage", but nothing that Places counters, such as Poison.

Also know that 1 Metal Energy will prevent all Spikes. Even if your Opponent has 4 Forretress out, they all do 10 seperate damage, and Metal Blocks each of them.
And luckily for me this weekend, I learned Unown M blocks Spikes as well
