People around the world: Im sure you know how oil hungry america is. So this following car The Apterra type-1 is the future of american automobiles, or so there saying. It looks like a spacecraft from the jetsons. Its an electric car which supposly gets 120 mph and 300 mpg. This is just wierd and cool at the same time. I guess using more electricity and less oil is well worth it. Not to mention these cars were very expensive and now there very affordable. Thoughts?

All I got was this message. But I did see a little thumbnail pic of the car along the side of the page. It looked pretty cool. 300 MPG is insane.
 
I wonder how expensive it is and when the hybrid is coming out. I'd buy it just for the 300MPG benefit.
 
The video worked for me this time, and I watched it. It is pretty cool. It unfortunately appears to only be a two seater, so it wouldn't be much of a family car.
 
As mew* said, 2 seat, no trunk and looks ridiculous.

Other than that, it seems amazing. I mean, 300 MPG that insane.

Did anyone besides me realize the gas pedal has a + sign on it and the brake has a - sign?

I think its awesome it expels hot air when your not in the car too.

In the end, i say, i would buy one seeings as I am at the age where I have no wife or kids.

And i agree cars like that will eventually be all the drive and we will laugh at those who drive things like a SUV or something.

Actually, from the video, the pure electric one only gets a 120 mile distance range, not 120 mph(upper speed limit, the true value is actually 90 mph).

The hybrid is 300mpg. Pretty nice I gotta admit.

Though, I wish cars would go back to the way they were when gas mileage was favored over power, I'd take a 60 mpg car anyday over a 30 mpg car / a Hemi...

Yeah, and 90 mph should be good unless your going on the autobahn or you like driving really fast o_O but 85-90 should be good enough for most people.
 
The price is less than 30k - it's fairly expensive, but worth it considering you'll almost never have to buy gas :).
 
Actually if you look at the 300 MPG compared to the price of the vehicle...Its really cheaply priced...If you drive quite a few miles then you will easily offset the price of the vehicle. Look at my Family: Just me alone I drive 45,000-65,000 miles a year, while spending roughly 300-400 a month in gas. My mother drives nearly a third more than I do, and a equal more in fuel, so, our family buying 2 of these cars would GREATLY reduce the amount of the cars total price and upkeep.

Heres a little math: 60,000 (2 of the Apterra Type 1-H) - 8800 (Fuel for 1 year) = 51,000 (for 2 vehicles that get 300 mpg a piece)(Granted you will spend some on fuel, but no where near the amout we currently spend...). Where on earth could you get 2 cars for 51,000 that get 300 mpg a piece?!

Look at the hybrids that are the market now, that dont even get 50 mpg, and they are like 35K and up.

Im buying one when they get released!

But...

How reliable is it?
How hard is it to work on?
How rare would the replacement parts be?
How much would all of this cost?

How often does the battery cell thing (yeah, I don't know what it's called) need to be replaced?



All of that contributes to the cost. Everything has to wear out at some point, and just when is that point?
 
Well, I do like the MPG. But, if you hit anything bigger than, say, one of those new Smartfor2 cars, you're probably going to end up splattered over the road in the event of an auto accident...
 
Let's see...

A 300mpg car that only hits 120mph and is probably un-mod'able OR

a Subaru WRX STi which has 305 hp, can run a 4.6 0-60, low 12 1/4 mile and gets 23 mpg...

i'll easily take ths STi even despite the 277 mpg difference.

i'm just the racing type i guess.
 
You guys are crazy. When do you need a car to even go faster than 75 MPH? Seriously :tongue:. Just as long as the acceleration is good enough so that you can perform well in stop and go traffic. Do you guys drive your street cars at speeds > 90 MPH? I hope not :lol:.
 
Personaly, i think its a good idea but 2 seats and no trunk is just dumb.

The average teenager doesn't even drive all that much to bother with the MPG, my bro fills up like twice a month and his car costs 13k, do you really think he will get another 17k in gas? no to mention the bother of when he sometimes drives to pokemon events with me, him our friend and my sister... that will definatley fit in a 2 seater... then you put our deck bags in there... yeah, thats not going to fit.
 
seeing as this is the TYPE 1-E/H I have a feeling that they are more then likely just making sure that they can get everything to go as planned in a smaller version.. then will eventually *next 2-5 yrs i'm guessing* move into something of a Minivan or such for families that require it.
 
i am in the process of putting a electric motor in a 71 VW bug, is it well worth it?

the down side, is that our current batteries arent that great, with the weight of the batteries needed to power the car, the charge is only good for about 60 miles....

in the next 20 years we shall see a huge different in battery tech

but the oil companys wont allow them....

believe it or not there was a production electric car in the early 90's...the EV1 the oil companys bought everyone they could an crashed the brand new cars.....this was back in 1990

Not a bad car lol.

Anyway, it still uses fossil fuel, so it's not a real solution.

The real solution would be to create a device that can Teleport humans from Point A to point B.:thumb:

Small Diesel engines are the only route forward right now. But they do have to be small. Fast ground transport has to be by rail or bus. Imagine a world where personal transport was limited to 35mph but the buses could do 80MPH+

Lowering maximum vehicle speeds means that far less radical aerodynamics can be used. drag losses are proportional to frontal area and the cube power of speed.
