Do you ('Gymers) think it would be a good idea to have a forum dedicated to the History of this amazing TCG? Some things that could be included are decks and a list that did well in the past, records of how many times those decks won or made top cut. A main strategy that was involved in most decks or anything game breaking that happened i.e. Holon Engine, Team Magma at a certain Worls. Also, the top cuts of U.S. Nats and Worlds of every year. Like the decks that made it, who played them; then how the Top Cut played out.

It might be hard to dig up that information now but as big as a community as the Pokegym is I believe it's very feasible. Thoughts?

Now to Mods, do you guys think this is a good idea? If so, is it feasible?

I'd love to see something like that. It's always fun to look back all the fun times you had with anything, especially the Pokemon TCG.

Besides articles on great decks and tournaments, I'd like to see articles on great scandals and controversies in Pokemon TCG history. I'm pretty sure there have been several. Other non-tournament, non-deck-related historical articles would be nice.

If you'd like to pull some of that kind of information together, we'd be very happy to publish it.

I did start a series of articles on the TCG history, but haven't had the time to work on it lately. I could see what you describe as being part of it.

well i wouldn't mind doing some research but i've only been around for a year and a half. So my input on previous formats wouldn't be very elaborate or accurate. I'll try talking to some of the more experienced players to see what I can come up with.

This is an EXCELLENT idea. Problem with articles though is to find the time to reasearch everything. Unfortunately, it's not like M:TG where

a) there's no language barrier (so many cool cards that will ever only be in Japanese)
b) WotC have kept proper records of everything. The official webpage for M:TG is like a historical forum full of articles about the game.

They no doubt had kept records for Pokémon too, but we'll never see them now :nonono:

It really wouldn't be that hard if a group of people that have been playing from the beginning of the game got together and put together their memories of the decks that did well since the beginning. I can recall pretty well the decks that have done well since Nintendo took over. That's a good 4-5 years, right? Then you just need people that remember the other 5-6 years and you can put together a decent timeline of decks that did well and events the decks did well at.

Contact people that played in the STS and battlezones and the old tournaments under WotC (some still play the game) and they would probably remember what they went against and played at those tournaments.

I agree that this would be a great idea.

Interesting concept, and one we should look at. I would see this forum being a place to gather information and discuss events and people in the game's history. Perhaps starting a thread would be controlled to focus discussions and control how much we are discussing at any one time, but anyone could post information - kind of like the members card of the day forum. Definitely worth some consideration.

I have an idea:
Get someone to set up a wiki. Let the history write itself! Many Pokemon fans would be on the wiki to edit and contribute. Collectively we could all write it and get lots of data up there really fast.

If you go to wikiindex.org (an archive of wikis) and see their list, there are tons of wikis that specialize in different topics. Certainly someone could make a viable wiki that specializes in Pokemon TCG.

I set up a wiki about Pokemon TCG in the Southern Maryland area. As soon as I turned it on, there were Pokemon players contributing and making their own articles. Certainly, a general Pokemon TCG wiki would work.

That's kind of where I was going with this. Like Single Card Strategy, Collecting, etc., Deck Help and Strategy, ATM it could have it's own Forum. Then within that forum we could have each individual season as Sub-Forums, to make it easier to organize and look up info.

I think the wiki's a good idea - it's an appropriate format for a collectively-contributed body of knowledge. I know it's certainly worked well for our computer science department student club to put together a guide to the department.

I would like to see standing of all players in all age groups from Major Events. Like the STS in the old days both days 1 and 2. I would love to see pairings (not possible) and Records after each round. I wish I could find somebody that had the info or something on the old STS, but I think it maybe a lost cause.

I do like the idea though.

Wow, that'd be awesome. It will certainly show how the game has evolved in terms of mechanics, metagames, strategies, rulings...the topics are endless. And we could revive all the headaches Ditto and Clefable caused about 10 years ago. Hehe. :p

Yeah, the great thing about it, is that if you want to create a compendium of knowlege, a wiki is very easy to make. When I made my wiki, all I had to do was turn it on. I didnt have to do a thing!

And with multiple contributors with a variety of points of view and a variety of specialized knowledge, you increase the chances that nothing has been missed, nothing has been overlooked. If you have a non-wiki source (e.g. one person writing an article), he could, three months after the article is published, say to himself "Aw, darn, I forgot to mention [something]!" With a constantly changing, update-able web of articles, with large numbers of users, if something important has been overlooked, you can be sure at least one person will notice, and fix it. It's anonymous peer review on a large scale.

Whenever, I talk to people at league about the wiki I run, I define it as a book that writes itself. That's what it is.

bulbagarden.net has a great wiki (not to mention one could contrib this info to wikipedia), pokepedia.net has timeline & Gym has WizPOG archive. Definitely open to the idea, but really is there enough interest and time to do something greater than any one of those things, let alone greater than all of them? All the above are lightly used for the purpose of history. Its cool to want a reference, or a history; its quite another thing to get a person or mass of people to agree on what to do and actually write one. Hey, it's raining here in CA, so my blanket is wet.

No offense, but as interesting as the forum/subforum idea is, I wonder if everyone finds forums cumbersome as a reference format? Also, there are no easy restores when authors just jump in and zap their whole article or and very poor ways to do group edits.

There's a nice vb->wiki integration; I've had it running in test before.

The best way to push this idea to reality is to commit to what information you would contribute by posting in this thread. If enough people commit to contributing... then why not? So, what would you write for this 'history'?

Well so far people have been focusing on the decks and so on, which is great. But my focus would be on the collecting side of things, the cool promos that so few people even remember now and so on.

All of that might've been lost forever if PCL hadn't made the database CD for the 10th anniversery celebrations. 'Pop had his excellent articles as well.

And I'd love to know what ways he has for extracting information

Wikipedia's trying to shift large projects into their own encyclopedias to avoid clutter or somesuch - if you've noticed over the last year or two, individual Pokémon pages (for example) have been combined into multi-Pokémon pages with only a brief description, and the Digimon section has been largely shoved off to its own wiki.
