Vegetarians/Vegans Unite!

Okay, so... my New Year's resolution has been to stop eating all meat other than fish, and so far I've done great. This is a thread for all of those people who choose not to eat meat. Tell us when you made the choice to stop eating meat and why. Simple. :thumb:

I stopped eating meat because it was a healthy choice for me. I used to love eating meat and I would often make bad choices when it came to food because of it ("Veggie combo? No way, give me the meat-lovers one!"). After I noticed that a high intake of meat combined with a low amount of physical activity was a bad idea, I decided that this year would be a great chance to get back into shape. Since then I've lost some weight, paid more attention to my eating habits, and felt a lot better than before. I also don't agree with the way humans treat animals in regards to the food industry, so it was somewhat a spiritual decision for me as well. And finally, I like animals, so that's cool too.

Note: The purpose of this thread is not to convince meat-eaters to become vegetarians or vegans. Let's not start a big argument here. People who eat meat choose to eat meat, so be respectful. I'm just looking for the proud among us who have decided to stop eating meat.

Well hes a better answer i was born an vegeterian with our culture and i plan to die one too. Its kind of easy when you havent really tried meat too much. But pretty soon people will be like "Zomg have you ever ate meat before"

Well, I personally hate vegetables and am thus a meat eater, but my dad started being a semi-vegetarian, and it's definately helped improve his health.

I also eat no meat other than fish. Honestly, I'm only doing it because I just don't love most meats. Ever since I've been a little kid, I've been hearing "voices" from animals... I don't know if its just me going crazy or not, but because of those voices, I've kind of tried to stay away from supporting people killing animals. I hope you've all enjoyed a small insight into my mind. :)

anyway...

Cattle have never been treated well. They're low on the food chain and honestly, they'd have a much worse death in the wild to a different predator.

as stated in the OP, this thread is NOT for those who choose to eat meat to post about how much they love it/how much they can't imagine living without it. such posts are off-topic and will continue to be deleted.

ummm have you ever seen how they are treated??? much worse than *snap* broken cow spine

ANYWAY, yeah, if you eat to much meat, it can be rly bad for you, but if you eat no meat, its rly hard for you to get the right stuff like protein. ever seen those plates with 3 sections? the small one is for like potatos, the middle sized on is meat for the protein and such and the HUGE ON THATS HALF YOU PLATE is veggies. =D

I was vegetarian for a little bit over a year and a half. I tried being vegan, and failed because of my love for cheeses. I can't live without those. But I did notice when i didn't eat meat, that my iron level was never up very high. Meat gives you a lot of those vitamins, and yes, veggies can do it too, but not in as large of a quantity. Morningstar Farms has some fantastic Black bean Burgers. You should definitely try them. They are tasty!

Man, and to think that not eating meat on Fridays in Lent almost kills me....
lol

I couldn't live with out a good cheese burger every now and then, or a good ham. *drools*

Anyway props to you guys that give it up and don"t give in.

Oh, heres something that I've always wondered. Why is it that someone who wont eat meat eat fish? Really it IS meat when you get down to it, so why the difference?

I dont eat fish or any other type of meat. I'm guessing because fish comes in a lot of medicines too.
And fish does help you become smart even know we're not going to have fish by like 2050 or something like that.
secrets idea of veggie patties are actually pretty good.

I’ll never knock anyone who doesn’t want to eat meat. My sister went veggie for a few years after working on a farm and I worked in a health food store for a while that had a vegetarian only lunch deli.

The mistake I think that folks make is assuming that being Vegetarian is automatically healthier. While there are many things to recommend it, veggie dishes are not automatically healthy in general and folks need to keep in mind that our bodes evolved with a food intake that included meat, so one has to plan more when eating without that.

In particular I remember one regular at the deli freaking out when he realized that the vegetarian food he was buying every day wasn’t low fat. Things like veggie lasagna can contain a lot of cholesterol ... and this guy had assumed that no meat = low cholesterol. Not true.

Similarly I saw folks like my sister not put any thought into what they ate as long as it wasn’t meat. The problem is that the body need protein and other things that meat contains in order to stay healthy. In jest I told her that she wasn’t a Vegetarian, but a “pastetarian” instead. Lol. Fortunately my parents were there to make sure that she got what she needed nutrition wise since she was still in High School at the time, but for folks going solo you need to read up and do some meal planning in order to stay healthy.

Just something to remember, if you eat fish then you are NOT a Vegetarian. That's a Pescetarian.

I am a Vegetarian. Partly because of the way animals are treated in the production but also because I just don't agree with eating other [previously] living beings. I understand the argument that humans are designed to hunt and subsequently eat animals but nowadays we have an alternative and while that alternative is present I choose to live by it.

You need the vitamins and minerals from meat.
Do you take some sort of replacement pills or something like that?

Yah, my vegetarian friends were also talking about how hard it was to get proper nutrition by eating only vegetables. I guess you have to eat some of the same things pretty often.

dont think theirs no wrong in eating both.

although take a note on this, Japanese live alot longer then anyone else in the world by staying on a Diet of Fish and Rice.

I think the Japanese country has over 3400 people who is over 100 years of age.

I have been shown alot of evidence about eating meat bieng bad for you, eating vegetables is alot better, ect, ect. If eating meat is bad for us, then why did we evolve to do it? Meat has the highest and most potent sources of protien you can really find, so eating meat is important for a healthy and balanced diet.
If you are veg/vegan, you have my full respect, having that kind of self control is really quite impressive (seriously).

I partialy agree with SPARTA, while I applaud your devotion to a resolution I must say if you only eat fish and veggies then fish and maybe nuts are your only source of protien you want exactly be real strong. Want you need is a balanced diet of each along with a work-out shedule. But hey thats just my opinion.:thumb:

well, you can get lots of protein in beans and tofu too.
but to stay on topic, i went vegetarian for like 4 months last year to see what it would be like. when i realized that i was not feeling much different i started to eat fish again, and then meat. but also i try not to eat mass produced meat because of the way the animals are treated. i like farm raised grass fead eef, organic meat, etc.

Vitamin B-12 is one of the nutrients you do not get a lot of without eating meat. There are plenty of vitamins out there for vegetarians to take, to be sure that they get the nutrients that they do need.
