I would post your question here. You'll get much better answers.

test it with another set of headphones that you know works _in both channels_. if it still doesn't work it's the ipod; if it works fine it's the earphones. did the balance adjustment get changed accidentally?

why would you get a splitter?

99.9% it's a loose connection in the headphone jack. I had the same problem with my iPhone... bough a Griffin headphone adapter (~$18 for a stupid 1inch wire!!), and it stopped picking up the signal for the left headphone.

I went to the Apple Store in London and got it replaced (they were really good about it, even though my receipt specifically said no warranty. Although in the UK 1 year is like a minimum, don't know the US law). If you have a receipt/warranty, just get them replaced.

@'mom: I would think a splitter would force a stereo signal into two directions. If she puts her broken headphone jack into the splitter, both sides will 'work'. Although you'd get sound in mono, which is just plain wrong.

well, you can get stereo splitters, which would allow two people to listen to the same music source with their own sets of earphones. but if the earphone jack doesn't work correctly to begin with, it's not going to be any better using the splitter...which is why i asked the question.
