For those of you who are lucky enough to know another language, could you help out the rest of us? Post a useful phrase in English and then in another language. I have found that it shows great respect for you to be able to speak the other persons language, even if it is only a couple of words, than to assume they speak yours. This list can also be used in reverse for someone learning English.

For everyone that posts, thank you in advance. Maybe before worlds I will put together a pdf of all the phrases and have it posted for everyone to download and print.
 
Great idea! I wonder if PUI can provide pdf files of the book that is given at Worlds. It would be great fun to practice some phrases before the big event!
 
all participants at worlds get a booklet with basic sentences concerning gameplay/getting to know another player in their 'goodie bags'.

sentences...for example, 'would you like to trade with me?' is printed in all languages used at worlds; one just has to look up the phrase and can either attempt to say it, or even just point at what they're trying to say.

well, if some of you REALLY want that, i can scan my booklet i got from worlds 07 and put here for download (but probably as .jpg extension, not pdf)
 
'Mom is right, you do get a battle dictionary, but it's not translated into English, you can only point at a sentance for someone else to read. For example, one column will say "Hello", the next column will have a list of 'hellos' but in the foreign language. Hello in Japanese is written in Japanese characters. There is no way a person can attempt to say hello in Japanese unless they can read those characters. Too bad there isn't a pronunciation column in that battle dictionary.

I had fun last year at worlds, meeting some people from France and some from Spain. It gave me a chance to dust off my French and Spanish I learned in college. This year I'm studying Japanese--I want to practice my new skills!
 
not true, in the booklet it has on ocidental characters how to speak. for an example:

poisoned is doku
burned is yakedo
asleep is nemuri
paralyzed is mahi
confused is konran

but there isnt anything in danish in the booklet, Peter =(
i wish they could write in some scandinavian language.
as for the booklet, cant scan, i need first to copy the booklet and scan after =/
i'll do when i get some time to do that

It's not in all languages, only 7 languages (incl English) are covered.
 
The 7 languages they cover are:

English
Japanese
French
German
Italian
Spanish (Mexico, Argentina)

portuguese is such a tricky language, but we say:

broken card = carta espancadora

broken combo = combo esbudegador

okay, i might remeber other phrases

For anyone who's interested in the Norwegian versions of the same two phrases, they're EXACTLY the same. :D So save printing paper and just print them out once for your Worlds notes.

However, when pronouncing them, remember that they're so far apart from each other that it's impossible to hear any resemblance at all. :lol:
