Salemence VS Magmortar Lv.X

Muscovy Level X

New Member
Now as we know, Magmortar Lv.X decks are one of the big arch-types this season. I'd like to show everyone a card that can compete with Magmortar for what is best at: bench hitting. So without farther ado, here is how Salemence (Secret Wonders) and Magmortar Lv.X stack up.

Magmortar Lv.X
Evolution Stage: 3 Evolutions, 4 if Magby is used.
Main Attack: :fire::fire::fire::fire:, discard 2 :fire: and do 100 damage to any of your opponent's Pokemon.
HP: 130
Weakness and Resistance: Double Water, ouch!
Retreat Cost: 3
Poke-Power: Induces a double power burn.

Salamence
Evolution Stage: 3 Evolutions (Stage 2).
Main Attack: :fire::fire::water::water:, discard 2 fire or water for 100 damage. (Fire=to active, Water=to bench).
HP: 140
Weakness and Resistance: The Fighting Resistance helps against Gallade, and the Colourless weakness isn't too bad.

Both cards seem balenced at this stage. Let's look at other factors.

Evolutions
Magmortar Lv.X:
Stage 1: Magmortar (MT): The amount of damage is good, the best attack if you aren't bench hitting. But not that amazing on its own.
Magmortar (SW): Also a really good Magmortar. The Poke-Body is helpful, its attacks have potential, and it can do some small time bench hitting.
Basic: Magmar (SW):
Magmar (MT) Can do an early KO, but don't count on it.
Baby: Magby (MT): Burn is always useful.

Salamence (SW)
Other Salamences: Salamence ex Good power, and mass spread of damage.
Salamence δ ex Itr can do some bench damage, that's it.
Other evs up soon.

Nice tread mate!

I think salamence siriously has some good advantages, and is worth thaking over magmortar if you've got some good tanks on table who will let you collect all that energy. It might however work fantastic with a Togekiss, I sure would give that one a try.

The thing that makes all Magmortar decks dangerous is the ability of premier ball and a fire starter in mag decks, this gives you an asurance that you'll have your fire energy, which Salamance has a bit more trouble with.

Nontheless good topic! if you play Garchomp/Togekiss with him and just add a couple of psy energies you'll have a deck that is full with hard hitting pokemon!

The problem is Sally can't abuse scamble and dre. Also Mag is a stage 1 and sally is a stage 2. Mags basic is good and sallys isn't really. Unless you are talking about mag lv.x compared to sally. Then still mag is better because it is a tech.

He is talking about the Secret Wonders Salamance which can use DRE and Scramble and who uses Magmortar Lv.X as a tech?

It really comes down to the pre-evolutions and support.

The only real support you COULD run with Salamence is Togekiss, because you want water energies and the ability to attack. Togekiss eventually runs out of energy to find.
Magmortar has fire starters, which unlike Togekiss, become more effective as more energies hit the discard.

Magmortar's got a useful stage 1. One of the best in the game, actually. Salamence has... Well. Not much to be proud of with its stage 1. The fighting resistance on Shelgon SW is cool, but it doesn't have spreading attacks to put pokemon in range of Salamence KOs, nor does it have a steady attack that can be devastatingly powerful late game. It has... A defensive attack, which you most likely won't use due to the three energy cost and inability to access it on the evolution.

Salamence is interesting... But it just is outclassed by Magmortar, sorry to say.

The main Sally isn't ex, so it can use those energies. And a Stage 1 Lv.X is equivelant to a stage 2.

I did find that Mag was better, but I still think Sally is underated. As for energy aceleration, you can use an energy loader and Holon's Castform. The best Sally setup would be the PK ex with Altaria d ex.

Sally is cute, but before Leafeon, we didn't have a relaible way to give him energy. And now that we have leafeon... you are better off using Magmortar with him.
Sally is nice, but there isn't really all that much to use with him, unless you just absolutely love that resistance.

Read sally again. You have to discard 2 basic fire or 2 basic water. Also yes it is a stage 2 equivilent to mag lv.x but the only thing is mag lv.x isn't the main attacker, mag is. Mag lv.x is just the tech. Sally on the other hand has only a few attacks that are good but need a ton of energy. Mag could just spread.
