2007 when did you drop? 2008 when will you drop?

We've been thinking about this too. Our son is ranked in Seniors high enough that were he to not play in US Nats then he'd get an invite. That has been this year's goal for him. But the prizes at Nats are so excellent. So winning the prizes at Nats is probably easier than winning them at Worlds so I'd say go for the Nats' prizes. But I see your question and ours too--if you lose a game or two, it might be best to drop and then get the invite to Worlds.
I'm happy to see many more invites this year.
 
How many rounds do the seniors have? This is my first year doing this. Also, what's an estimated time of how long it takes if you intend to stay for every round?
 
I didn't drop at all last year. Heck, I've made T32, but I'm not bragging about it here.
While I have nothing against the people who dropped to protect their ratings, I just find that stupid overall. Honestly, I don't really care for ratings because it would make me a completely different person.

I wouldn't drop at a Nationals at all, because it would be like, what's the point of going if you're going to drop in the end? Even if I have like nearly 1900 points, I'd still play all the way at Nats.

Keep in mind that there are people who drop on purpose because they want to screw with someone's resistance, so they would miss the cut.
 
I'll play it out. Last year I was 5-4 at the end. After the fourth or so round going 2-2, I knew I wouldn't make the cut, but I felt like playing it out.
 
2007: 0-1 drop. By now, everyone knows why.

2008: Unless you have a rating of 1990, there is no reason to drop Nationals this year - therefore, I intend to play the full nine (ten?!) rounds!
 
1990? There are only two people with that or more and one is a jr. The other is Paul at 1992. 1990 are you sure. I think if your that good you would be disappointed to go and play and want to drop.

How many rounds do the seniors have? This is my first year doing this. Also, what's an estimated time of how long it takes if you intend to stay for every round?

1-Depends on attendance. 2-Build up some endurance: you're in for a long morning/afternoon/evening if you play through the swiss.

I think last year the seniors played 7 rounds.

The only hypothetical situation where Paul would drop is if he takes three losses. If he loses three, then he won't be making cut anyways

Yeh Paul put himself in a great position to get an invite. Even if he gets three losses, I really dont think it will be 0-3. I would think he woud have more than a few wins before he would have 3 losses if he reaches that mark at all.

To everyone who says that dropping is stupid, I would answer that having an exit strategy is a necessary part of planning for any tournament.

If you have a ratings invite secured or most probably secured, and you have spent the money on hotel and airfare. Why on earth would you want to blow it and have to play in the grinder.

As to Kettlers drop last year. It was the pairing from h*** for his first round match. There may be even worse first round parings this year as there are a few Grinches out to steal points.

Does anyone have a link to the thread from last year that contains the ratings for NA prior to USA nationals?
 
NoPoke, check the World championships forum to find some Ratings list thread started by lia around this time last year.
 
So I am reading another thread about Worlds and invites and such when this ??/41 catches my eye. So does that mean if all the winners in North America are in the top 25 point ranking that a invite could go all the way down to number 41 on the list?
