Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

My Report (and lousy placing) of Canadian Nats

Muscovy Level X

New Member
I showed up early, still undecided for my deck. I had a choice of Infernacatty or Darkvile (a Darkrai/Weavile based deck). After a lot of thought, I went with Darkvile (this proved to be a mistake :frown:).

This was my DarkVile list at the time:

2 Darkrai Lv.X
2 Darkrai (GE, #4)
3 Weavile (SW)
1 Weavile (DP)
4 Sneasel
2 Crawdaunt ex
2 Corphish
2 Palkia Lv.X
2 Palkia (DP)

4 Special :dark:
9 Basic :dark:
6 :water:

3 Moonlight Stadium
4 Bebe's Search
2 Roseanne's Reasearch
4 Dusk Ball
2 Premier Ball
1 Night Maintenance
1 TVR
1 POV
1 Warp Point
2 TGW

Now, it started as an idea of using Weavile to load up Crawdaunt. Darkrai was put in to make Crawdaunt do even more damage. Then I got the greatest Tech idea: Palkia Lv.X. Using the already present Moonlight Stadium and Weavile SW, you can use Palkia's power and then swap out for your choice of active. It was such a good idea, I went from 1-1 to 2-1 to 2-2. Palkia could very efectivly shut down the big engine: Claydol. The ever-benched Claydol could be dragged up, and Darkrai Lv.X could do 60+ damage and the notorious double sleep. There would only be a 25% chance of it waking up to use its power, and it would take 2 turns to retreat.

But now, on to the event...

Round 1 - VS Brandon S (Empolostar)
After a brief confusion and almost playing Aron*, I got down to the match.
I started with a loust hand, but managed a Weavile T2. He was always a step ahead of me, and I never really got to use Palkia. But it was pretty much lost when Darkrai Lv.X got KO'd by the second Surf Together.

Loss, 0-1.

Round 2 - VS ? (I never really asked names ) (The Torterrible that wasn't really)
This kid played a Torterra deck with a 1-1 Sceptile (and he managed to T2 it ) and loads of openers (3+ Pachi, 1+ Phione, and 2+ Chatot). I sniped the Chatot with faint attack, but didn't get to use Palkia. By the time I had it out, all my good attackers were KO'd, and everything could either KO me on the next turn if I did Restructure, or retreat for something that could. But wothout that Scepy to speed things up, I would have won.

Loss, 0-2.

Round 3 (Empoleon+Tech)
This was an easy win, about T4. All he ever played was an Empoleon and an Eevee (I assume he had Glaceon). I built up Darkrai Lv.X with Weavile, and anoyed him with a T2 Palkia. Once Darkai was charged and Lv.X'd, I KO'd the Eevee, then won next turn when he rolled 2 tails on his sleep.

Win, 1-2.
At this point, I'm figuring that I had a chance at the top cut, if I won my next 3.

Round 4 (The Torterrible that really was  )
I won by a T2 donk. I went first, got a Sneasel with a special :dark:, and did 30 damage to her lone Turtwig. During her turn, she put played a Quick Ball, and really proved a point about her deck. If you are running Quick Ball, you should have simple and focused Pokemon lines, normaly 1 or 2, 3 if one or more is Basic. You do not run it in a deck that requires a 4-2-3-1, a 2-1-2/3-1-3/Several in mixed openers and Claydol. And you do not run Torterra without them. You run Torterrible.
And, a win.

Win, 2-2.

Round 5 (Gardelade, with loads of techs)
This kid was probably only 11, and really over-did it on the Tech department (Mostly stuff like 3-3 Claydol, 4 Pachi, 2 Phione). I had a pretty good start, and sniped a benched Phione for the first prize. But before I can set up, he's got 2 fully loaded Gallade in play. I was hoping for an oportunity.
After loads of fuss, I used Restructure and swaped up Claydol. Palkia was active (purposly, I did ot want to have it stuck there), and I sent up Sneasel. I managed to get the DP one, and grab a Moonlight Stadium out of my 20 or so cards left. I was able to do my free retreat routine to get Darkrai up & attacked, we stalled like that with Claydol stuck for ages, and this is where we hit time. The senario was this: a Benched Pachi, Gardy woth 20 damage, 2 Gallade with 60 HP each, and Claydol active, 10 HP left with the sleep effect.
Here's where it went wrong.
I would lose if i didn't KO anything that turn. So I just took out Claydol, to tie us. Then there was Psychic Cut...

Loss, 2-3

I learned a lot that day:
-Canadian players just don't play archtypes, even at big tourneys. That was the first time I ever faced a G&G style deck.
-Infernacatty would have been way better.:frown:
-Darkvile should have been either the obvious with Crawdaunt ex or Palkia. Both clog things up too much. I never got Crawdaunt in play.
-To mess with your opponent, play a Corphish imediantly. (It was worth it, they never had much benched...).

Props:
-More & better free stuff than usual.
-Meeting Aron*, and meeting mike (though it turns out I knew him before ).
-Trading, including offloading my DRE (no longer need it), and my Gallades (I don't need temptation).
-Having fun, and for once not caring about missing top cut.

Slops:
- 2-3. :nonono:
- Only 5 rounds.
-I made the wrong deck choice.
-Cut was top 8.
-An old enemy was there.
-I spent the whole time thinking I was going to get yanked at 3:00, because my dad was having a dinner party. Luckly, alternate pickups were aranged.

What age group? Because my friend got 5th in Seniors at Canadian Nationals last year with a totally random deck. It was Typhlosion d/Arbok d/Milotic d/Full Flame. Because not that many archtypes were played, and ones that were, he lucked out on burn flips on. :)

I'm a senior. Personaly, I think I did have pretty bad luck with that.
But I stand by what I said, I should have used Infernape. I've been using it forever, and the only reason I didn't for this was becuase a fast Empolostar would (theoreticly) win by 4 prizes.

well I think I was the one who played you round two but I didn't use pach or phione, what did you start with if it was corfish then I was the one who played you.
