2nd Place SRs Malaysian Nationals - See you at Worlds

I made the right choice to play, Gardy/Gallade/Weavile. It just shows that it's not completely dead. Here's my 2nd place report on the 2009 Malaysian Nationals.

A day before, I got my team, the Hunters and some other guys to gather at a McDonald's near our local league. Well, not so near maybe, we didn't want anyone to know what we were running. My deck just needed the element of surprise, actually, and it worked pretty good. So I slept early the night before, but ended up waking up at 6am, not able to get back to sleep. I was so excited about it. I got a ride from one of my teammates in his parents' van and got to the place at about 9.40am.

25 Seniors
5 Rounds Swiss
Top4 Cut

Round 1 VS Daniel w/ Machamp

He T1'd me but I had managed to use call earlier. I PLOXed his only Machamp and won after taking out his second lone Pokemon in play, Claydol.

1-0

The media arrived. It was a real surprise, and the event was featured on the 8pm local news. Woww.

Round 2 VS Adrian w/ Hippowdon
I locked him early, and managed to beat his setup. He couldn't setup due to being locked ; not being able Uxie an empty hand. Whenever my Gardies got close to being KO'd, I just Healer'd them. Didn't break the lock, AT ALL. =)

2-0

Uhm, lunchtime. We walked to McDonald's for that cheap lunch McValue meal.

Round 3 VS Ze N. w/ Gengar/Machamp
I almost got donked, but managed to Call, yet again. I got a Gardy setup, which got murdered by his Machamp Lv.X that flipped two heads on Hurricane Punch. At that point I thought I was gonna lose, but after taking that Machamp out with Uxie I managed to setup another Gardy with help from Upper energies, which locked him while I got another one setup. He came back with Gengars, but I managed to match that speed. Prizes got to 4-1 his favour at one point, but I did an epic Dark Palm on his second Gengar with a single energy attached with Unown G, and he suffered from energy drought from there on, as he was locked and couldn't do any Claydols. He tried stalling by sending Uxies out twice, which I locked both. Then, I took a Claydol out. To finish up, I used Bring Down on a damaged Gengar for game. VERY close one, GG.

3-0

Round 4 VS Tat W. w/ Gengar/Cresselia
He took an early lead, but didn't manage to get more Gengars out since his Claydols were prized. I managed to get a lock on and controlled the game from there on, taking his Pokemon out one by one. Didn't break the lock at all from that point. =)

4-0

Round 5 VS Shu W. w/ Gengar/Manectric/Crobat Gs
Uhm, I couldn't setup well. I managed to charge two Gardies but that was it. My two Baltoys were prized in this game, so I had no way to lower my hand count, or draw into any Rosy's or Unown G to protect my Gardies. He didn't play any supporters early game, and destroyed me pretty quickly.

4-1

I knew I had made the topcut anyways, so I didn't mind losing to Shu Weng. Dominic and Jit How didn't make it unfortunately. They both had bad resistance, while Jit How's case was pretty sad. His only loss was a donk by a player who later did lousily in the rest of the tourney. It is a pretty horrible feeling, I know. Nevermind, he still has one more season as a Senior though. I am pretty sure the Top4 looked like this :

1st Seed : Shu W.
2nd Seed : Malik H. (Me)
3rd Seed : Ze N.
4th Seed : Ching T.

Time to play for that Worlds invites. I have trophies in the bag now, but I need those invites/travel awards. Not to mention scholarships for the victor. =D

Top4 VS Ze N. w/ Gengar/Machamp
He was pretty confident of turning the tables. I beg to differ. (Didn't say it out loud lol) I never get cocky and brag about it. I personally think it overconfidence will be my downfall. I stayed alert against him, in case he had more surprises up his sleeve.

Game 1 : He got an early Machamp, which I soon PLOXed. Then he tried coming back with Gengar, which I owned with PLOX+Psychic Restore from Uxie. After that he couldn't come back and I kept the lock on.
1-0

Game 2 : Almost the same thing, cept he managed to Take Out some of my Pokemon. I fell 3 down on prizes, but came back with PLOX for pretty much the whole game. He tried to do another Machamp X on my Gardy but failed this time. Oh I finished this game pretty epically too. He wanted to force me into sudden death, but I KO'd his Gengar with Shiny Skull's Counting Song instead. =)
2-0

5-1

YES WORLDS INVITE. No more LCQ headaches. =D

Top2 VS Shu W. w/ Gengar/Manectric/Crobat Gs

Game 1 :
So he had the T1 Gengar, while I struggled to get my Claydols out. Apparently they were both prized. Gah, I managed to get them out eventually and turned the tables against him, leaving me with one prize left to his two. He did such a pro play, with Crobat G on my damaged Pokemon from Manectric earlier, and then timing Poltergeist perfectly, to KO my active Weavile and take two prizes. It really caught me by surprise.
0-1

Game 2 : I just don't wanna talk about this game. He got such a good start to my so-so one. The Gengars were too good for me, I recall him getting at least 2 Gengars out by Turn2, so he pretty much beat me to locking him. Even if I did managed to lock him, he would Shadow Room to 2HKO it. My draws were terrible this game too, and in the end after sweeping me, I had 10HP left on Weavile and 60HP left on Dusknoir in bench. He had 2 prizes to go, and I simply asked him "Do you have another Crobat?". He showed it, and GG.
0-2

5-2

Well, second place still isn't bad. I got my Worlds invite, trophy and 18 packs which had Kazam X, Pikachu and Frostom in them. Overall, it was a good day for everyone. Yik Heng, my mate, won Masters with a pretty different tech in his Machamp. All in all, it was a great day, and I am pretty satisfied with my winnings today. I am going to have to pay my way to Worlds, but I have a chance of getting that travel award as the winner isn't interested in going to Worlds again. I have no clue why. And of course, I am very happy with my deck's performance in a format full of Gengar. See ya at Worlds people!

Credits :
- The deck, made by the duo of Malik&Sam, and later edited according to Omar's.
- Lip Yee, Sam, Dominic, the Hunters (Team) for playtesting.

Props :
+ Worlds invite
+ TROPHY
+ 18 packs

Slops :
- No sponsored trip. (MAYBE)
- No scholarships.

@ Jason : Yeeah, thanks man. You too. ;)

@ Lip Yee : Haha thanks a bunch. Well, you did help me out with some testing, despite the distance. :)

@ Sean : Lol let's do it. We'll get uhhm... We'll make ASIAN ones. =D

@ Rish : Yeah thanks.

@ Sami : Oh hey thanks. I did not have the chance to meet you last year but I am hoping to this year. =)

@ dtrain : Thanks man. :]

@ Aaron : Ohh yess. I finally did, but a bit lower than expected, haha! Too bad though, I won't be seeing you at Worlds this year, and what seems to be, my last Senior year. :O

Hope you do well at the Worlds! Too bad no one was allowed to enter the tournament area due to the silly rule imposed by the organizer, otherwise I'm sure there would be players and observers hanging around and giving you moral support during the Final.

this is whats suppose to happen guys............ TC in UK was also rounded up....... this is indeed the correct procedure ... not siding anybody... plus its at the discretion of the tournement organisers....

It was rounded up here too, but no one at all were allowed to even see the games. Even when there was a distance between the player area and the tables acting as a border. The least they could do was let people stand behind the tables and watch from there. D=

Like I said, what they are doing is killing the interest in the game by not allowing any spectators at all. Also, this is the first time in Malaysian Nationals that there is no top cut for Juniors. The Champion is decided by SWISS. If you get a bad hand in any game - tough luck then. Goes to show that Juniors are not taken seriously.

not trying to defend them or anything.... this was exactly what happened in UK too....... spectates were shooed away to one side of the hall, maybe some caught the juniors playing but definately not the seniors and masters..... i believe that this shoudl be the right way..... spectatles hoo-haing whenever a card is drawn or a play is being made CAN be distracting .... well imo i think what they did was fair and proper.... at least we are going the right way in terms of standards.... please note that subang is not exactly HUGE.... LOL.... maybe they could have done that in Mont Kiara but subang haha......................

well this is not determined by them this is determined by the software (TOM) this is probably due to the fact that there was less then 8 players in the juniors .... if more there would have been top cut.... nothing to blame them at all...... and yes the game does involve luck..... i was poised was TC but i had to be paired up .... so how do you comment on that? whether they are taken seriously or not i do not know..... maybe its due to the falling numbes

If the UK Nationals is so noisy that they need some form of crowd control, I can understand. But since you have been playing at Malayisan Nationals all this while before this year, you should know better than to draw comparisons as the noise level at tournaments here are not any higher than that of a funeral service. Organizers need to look at their own peculiar circumstances. Bottom line is this - the number of players are already dropping, would banning spectatorship help the game at all??

Thats very true............ indeed the numbers in malaysia are dropping and at a very bad rate too 96 in 2007 to 67 in 2008 and 47 in 2009 its an average of 33% drop .......

BUT

noise levels even at the minimal level is distracting .... plus it should be noted that (if i got my info correctly) there weren't many qualified judges at all..... the whole tournement was actually runned by volunteers... and maybe considering the circumstances of the whole situation they felt the need to round it up

Uncle.... i am not saying you are wrong..... what they did certainly doesnt help maintaining the game, and as a player i am very sad to see it happening too.... but i have to admit what CC is doing has indeed brought the standard of the game to what it should be ...........

Well just hope we get my kids in the future ..... if i do come back i will indeed try to push it a bit more XD
