PF summed up exactly why it's a dumb game to have competitions with. Seriously, it would be more entertaining to watch everyone play brawl and be restricted to Pikachu, Pokemon Trainer, and Lucario. Probably would be a lot more skill based as well.

I've actually played it competitively, and let me tell you from first hand experience. This is how games turn out more often than not. You could say that this is the "metagame" as of when I quit the VG.

T1: You both choose a starter

T2: You don't like your starter's matchup against theirs, so you switch. You cannot attack that turn. Your new guy gets smacked in the face.

T3: They switch their Pokemon. Their new guy gets smacked in the face. This time, it's a critical hit, so their guy faints.

Here's where it goes one of two directions;

T4a: They bring out Jumpluff or some other fast Grass type and use Sleep Powder. You can't attack now.

T5a: You switch, and they hit your new guy with Sleep Powder.

T6-9a: Repeat T5a.

T10a: Your entire team is now asleep, so they just beat face.

OR

T4b: They bring out Forretress or Tentacruel, and set up Toxic Spikes.

T5b: Repeat T4b for double poison

T6b: They set up Stealth Rock

T7b: They switch into Hippowdon (If Forretress) or Abomasnow (If Tentacruel) and take a hit, taking little to no damage.

T8b-T592b: Their entire team is made up of high defense Pokemon using Recover/Roar/Protect/Random Attack or something similar, so they basically just sit and wait for you to die on your own from Sandstorm/Hail/Poison/Stealth Rock damage, while occasionally attacking you.

EDIT: This is ignoring those stupid Baton Pass strategies, because they never work when it matters, and setup strategies like using Swords Dance or Agility to raise stats, since you basically give your opponent a free turn to swap into whatever they want.

EDIT 2: Made the OR clear in the middle of the post, since it was causing some confusion.

Doesn't quite apply, since VGC is double battles. Both Sleep Powder and Baton Pass strategies are unheard of there.

Sleep wasn't a viable strategy in VGC last year because of how many people were running Lum Berry or Chesto/Rest. Baton Pass sucks in singles, too.

Really don't post about stuff you have no knowledge of, scrub video game players have no strategy in their games, but good players have a lot going on in just a few moves, I play both and the vgc is easily as competitive (and luck based) as the tcg

(Also most of what you said does't even make since, sleep powder and then toxic spikes xD)

Yeah, cause that big OR right in the middle of the post just didn't make it clear that there was either sleep OR TS. Obviously. Also, would you like to elaborate on me not having any knowledge of the game? Do you play online, or by VGC rules? Single, or Double? I know in Singles offensive Pokemon like Salamence and Gyarados are popular, since you don't have to worry about 2 attacks hitting the same guy.

I do have to admit, though, the above strategy won't really work at this VGC. Kyogre, Groudon, and Tyranitar are unbanned, so there are going to be a lot of weather based teams.

nobody even mentioned that not all members are asleep in real competitive play - sleep clause.

And the VG is requires MUCH more practice/skill to play well than the TCG.

In VGC, there's no sleep clause.

You made your "scenario" seem like a normal singles battle. No one in the right mind would ever have a team like that for VGC 2010. When it's just 4 v. 4, you'd rather spend time on actually hitting them then setting entry hazards, no?

No, see, my scenario was sarcasm. Truth be told, in 2v2 battles, there are double the risks to your current Pokemon out, therefore it's probably not wise to mess around with statuses outside of Thunder Wave. Also, if you read my posts, you'll see that I said:
