What is Redshark?

Redshark is a free computer application that allows you to play the Pokemon TCG on your computer. Nothing compares to real-life experience, but RedShark can be a great way for players to practice the game when decks are incomplete or when friends are out of reach.

Basically, RedShark gives you a TABLETOP that can be seen by both players.

Redshark is not an automated program that makes moves for you.
As in real-life play, you and your opponent will need to make your own moves, follow the rules, call your attacks, and computer your own damage.

Playing fair is the responsibility of the players. Mistakes and cheating can occur, just like in real life, so it is each player’s responsibility to insure the game is played correctly as in real life.

Redshark has the ability to create decks and play the game in a one-player solitaire mode or against an opponent over a network. It can also be played in a two-deck solitaire mode, allowing a person to use two decks to practice against themselves.

RedShark is a fan-made program and is not endorsed by or affiliated with Pokemon USA, Nintendo, or any official Pokemon company.

How to connect to and play the Pokemon TCG online using Hamachi and RedShark

There are two seperate programs that you will need: RedShark and Hamachi

RedShark will provide a virtual table top to play the Pokemon TCG.
The other program (Hamachi) is just a program that provides a connection between you and your opponent so you can both view the same "table."

Step 1: Install RedShark - click here

This program is a privatly developed software program that is an offshoot of the "APPRENTICE" client that is used by Magic the Gathering players. The creator of Redshark wanted to develop a similar program for the Pokemon TCG.

The creator of RedShark can be found on a great website called "PokeBeach." He makes himself available to answer questions and regularly updates the program to work out it's glitches.

TO START REDSHARK: Always RIGHT-CLICK the icon and select "Run As Administrator" if you're using anything newer than Windows XP. This will allow you to build, edit, and save your decks.

You can build, test, and play your decks on your computer with OR without an internet connection!
In "Solo mode," you can playtest on one side of the table.
In "Dual mode" you can play against yourself using two different decks.
In "Guest mode," you can connect and play with another player by entering his Hamchi number in preferences and hitting "start"
In "Host Mode," you simply wait for your opponent to type your Hamachi number in his preferences and hit "start."

It's really a fantastic way to practice against people around the globe!
_________

STEP 2: Install Hamachi - Click Here

You're going to need to install Hamachi in order to play against others online.
The page looks a little too corporate and intimidating. Don't worry, the program is great and the people there are very nice. They'll give you free email support for the free version!
Agree to the terms (checkbox) and choose "Unmanaged"

After you install the program, you'll need to join a Hamachi Network or create your own and invite others to join.
Go to our HAMACHI NETWORK LISTS thread to find networks to join or create your own network and post the ID and Password there!
__________

STEP 3: Connect to someone through RedShark.

One person needs to "wait for a guest" and the other person needs to "call a host."

NOTE: You NEVER need to change the Port # for Hamachi OR RedShark!
  • The person who "calls a host" needs to enter in the host's IP#.
  • To find your IP#, just open up Hamachi and create a network.
  • Once you have a network, look at the numbers on the top of the Hamachi screen; they should look something like: 12.34.567.890
  • Enter that number into the "Host IP" under: preferences - network connection
Once you have the Host's IP entered into your "host IP box" you both need to go to "New Game."

Once you are in "New Game" select mode 3 or 4 depending on who is hosting and who is calling a host.
Enter your deck in the area below the mode you choose.

After all of this, click "start" to begin connecting to your opponent.

You will use the "CHAT" function in Hamachi to speak to each other and coordinate starting games.

____ INSTALLING REDSHARK ON WINDOWS AND MAC ____________

Installing and Launching Redshark on Windows
  • Download the Redshark program installer from above, preferably to your Desktop.
  • Once your download has finished, run the installer program.
  • If Upgrading: You will need to uninstall any previous versions of Redshark to install the latest version. Go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel, click “Add or Remove” programs, then find and uninstall any Redshark listings (your deck files will be saved).
  • The Redshark installer window will open. Click the “Finish” button to install the program to the “C:redshark” folder.
  • If this is your first time installing Redshark, you will be prompted to create a new Redshark directory in your Program Files. Click “Yes” when the installer prompts you to do so.
  • Click “OK” once the installation has finished.
  • Launch Redshark from the Programs Files list in the Start menu (Start -> Programs -> Redshark -> Redshark). For easier access in the future, right-click the Redshark program listing, click “Send to,” then click “Desktop (create a shortcut).” This will allow you to access the program from your Desktop.

Installing and Launching Redshark on Macintosh

  1. Download the Redshark program installer from above, preferably to your Desktop.
  2. If you have a previous version of Redshark in your Applications Folder AND you want to keep your decks that you already made, then you must move or rename the previous Redshark application before proceeding to Step 3. If you do not move or rename the existing Redshark application, you may lose all of the Redshark decks that you have created.
  3. Simply drag the NEW redshark.app application to your Applications folder, replacing the previous one, if prompted.
  4. Double-click redshark.app to launch the program. If you want to save your old deck files, you MUST start the program before going on to Step 5. Starting Redshark will attempt to create a “redshark” sub-folder in the “Documents” folder, in which to save and load Redshark deck files.
If you had previous decks that you wanted to keep, do the following:

  • [*]Wherever you moved your previous copy of Redshark, right click on it and select “Show Package Contents” from the popup menu.
[*]From the Finder window that opens, open the “Contents” folder, and then the “MacOS” folder within that.
[*]Inside the “MacOS” folder, you should see your deck files. Leave this Finder window open for now.
[*]Now open your Documents folder. Within that, you should see a Redshark folder.
[*]You should now be able to use drag-and-drop to move/copy your old deck files into the “Documents/redshark” folder, where the new Redshark program will find them.
[*]NOTE: Newer Mac versions of Redshark will automatically save your previous decks.

A STEP-BY-STEP WALKTHROUGH OF PLAYING A REDSHARK MATCH

STEP 1: START THE REDSHARK PROGRAM

Always RIGHT-CLICK the icon and select "Run As Administrator" if you're using anything newer than Windows XP. This will allow you to build, edit, and save your decks.

Note: You may get an "ALLOW" pop up. Just hit allow and play on. I've NEVER experienced any hacking/virus issues as a result of using RedShark or Hamachi. You're safe.

STEP 2: TABLE SHARING - connecting to someone through RedShark.

You'll use the Hamachi program to join networks where potential opponents are sitting around waiting for a game (or are already playing someone else).

Right-click on someone's name (on the Hamachi Network List) and choose "chat"

A small chatbox will appear with the opponents screenname displayed at the top.
Simply type "GAME?" and they'll let you know if they can play.

Usually, the respone is something like "Sure. Who Host?"

What does this host/guest stuff mean?

Well, one person needs to "wait for a guest" and the other person needs to "call a host."

This means that one of you has to select "HOST" mode while the other selects "GUEST" mode.

The person who "calls a host" needs to enter in the host's IP# in preferences.

To find your IP#, just open up Hamachi and create a network.
Once you have a network, look at the numbers on the top of the Hamachi screen; they should look something like: 12.34.567.890
Enter that number into the "Host IP" under: preferences - network connection
Once you have the Host's IP entered into your "host IP box" you both need to go to "New Game."

Once you are in "New Game" select mode 3 or 4 depending on who is hosting and who is calling a host.
Enter your deck in the area below the mode you choose.

After all of this, click "start" to begin connecting to your opponent.

You will use the "CHAT" function in Hamachi to speak to each other and coordinate starting games.

STEP 3: STARTING YOUR MATCH

TIP: When in doubt, RIGHT-CLICK! Right-click options can get you just about anything you need in RedShark!

You will, probably, hear a 'ding' sound and see a bunch of cards appear on your RedShark screen.
On the left, you'll see your starting 7 cards. On the right, you'll see and empty table space.
You will note that your prizes will automatically be placed to the far right of the table for you!

To play a basic face down, right-click and drag it to the active position.
To place any card on the table face-up, you only need to drag it onto the table top

Doing common tasks:

Coin Toss: Click on the little coin icon that's to the right of your deck.

MULLIGAN!: If you have no starting basic, the program has an automated function that will shuffle your hand and prizes back into the deck and redeal your starting hand and new prizes! Simply click on "Player A" (or Player B if you are the guest) and select "Restart (no basics)"

Card Info: Mouse-over any card to read it's info (attacks, HP, PokeBodies, PokePowers, Set# and set)

Starting Your Turn: The buttons to start and end your turn are above and below the STADIUM box. When you click the start button, the program will automatically draw a card into your hand from your deck!

Drawing a Card: Click on the tiny hand/card icon to the right of the coin icon.

Drawing multiple cards: Right-click your deck and select "Draw N Cards"

Trainers/Supporters: There's a "T" icon just above the coin icon. If you click it, you will get a list of trainer/supporters. If you select one, RedShark will automate part of the function for you. For example: If you select copycat, your hand will be autoshuffled into your deck and you will have the same number of cards as your opponent!!

Calling Powers: Click on the card that has the PokePower and double-click the name of the PokePower in the big white box to the far right of your screen. (or you can just type it into the chat box manually)

Calling Attacks: Click on the card that has the Attack and double-click the name of the PokePower in the big white box to the far right of your screen. (or you can just type it into the chat box manually)

Placing Damage: Click on the card receiving the damage and add the appropriate amount using the big white box to the far right of your screen.

Discarding from table: Right-click anything you want to discard. You will see the option to discard it.

Getting a Card from Your Deck: Right-Click your deck and choose "VIEW." Click on any number of cards and select "Send and Close." If you do not need to show your opponent the cards you chose, select "PRIVATE" in the "action visibility" option that is at the bottom of the selection box.

Special Conditions: Click on the card receiving the damage and add the appropriate amount using the big white box to the far right of your screen.

Attaching and Energy to a Pokemon: To attach energy and tools to pokemon, simply drag whatever your attaching over the pokemon! The program will ask you "Attach?" Then you'd select yes.

Detaching energy: Right-click the energy that is attached to the pokemon and select "detach." You will also have a "discard" option.

Evolving or Leveling Up a Pokemon: To evolve or Level Up a pokemon, simply drag your higher Pokemon card over the target pokemon! The program will ask you "Evove?" Then you'd select yes. Evolved Pokemon will have small tabs below them that show the levels beneath. You can mouse-over the tabs to view the card info of any card beneath the highest evolved!

Devolving a Pokemon: Right-click the tab that shows the lower level and choose "devolve."

Great, just great. This is going to be extremely beneficial to those looking to get on redshark. I wish this was around when I tried this out about a year ago and failed horribly

Thanks Rogue!

Yeah. It's a one-shot deal. All we need to do is just add and edit and add and edit until it's this massive piece of useful information.

I think I actually remember when you were trying to get going on this General!
It's a bit intimidating for some to install these "strange" programs on your computer and need to know how Hamachi works in cooperation w/ RedShark.

Once you install and play your first game. The anxiety, mystery, and suspicion disappears :)

Haha, I remember you helping me out as well. Very good guide, will help alot of new players. Props.

is the password the port #

You never need to change the Port # for Hamachi OR RedShark.

The only Password you'll need to worry about is when you JOIN or CREATE a Hamachi network (after you have the program installed).

In RedShark, there are no passwords at all. There's just Hamachi Screen names and IP addresses (that's the same as the Hamachi number).

This is to bypass port forwarding right?

My friend can't forward his ports on his router, but I already did.

Can he still connect to me? or is the ONLY option to use Hamachi?

Umm.. don't guess you have any instructions this clear for Mac yet, huh? Try as I may, I have never been able to connect to anybody.

I'm working on pics that will help you SEE how to do it. But, you just select the menu at the top "Networks" and choose "Join" or "Create" a network .

Could I do redshark on my iPod touch

OMG that'd be hottness. But... no :(

I cannot open hamachi, when i try, it says "Safari can’t open the file “hamachi.msi” because no available application can open it."

Hamchi is a seperate program that is not RedShark.

RedShark is the "table space " that you play the game on.
Hamachi is the software that allows you to share the table (i.e. connects your computers together)

So, you need to INSTALL Hamachi.
Then you need to INSTALL RedShark.

:)

Hamachi and Redshark do not directly interact, so that makes things really creepy and counterintuitive.

Like R_A said, you need to install them both separately (though the order you install them in does not matter).

Making Hamachi work requires an active internet connection. Personally, I use an older version of Hamachi because it cooperates with LAN games, as well (warcraft and starcraft), which is AWESOME - but it doesn't matter for Redshark. Once you have Hamachi installed, open it. You'll be prompted to make a username and password, or whatever, and then it will take you to the interface, which is completely blank basically.

Open the "Networks" menu and click "Join an (existing) Network". You'll find that what they ask you for is pretty self-explanatory.

Playing Over Hamachi:

Open up Redshark and click Game -> New Game.

Select EITHER Mode 3 (Host) or Mode 4 (Guest). Mode 3 takes less work. You MUST select the opposite mode from your opponent; they have to pick Mode 4 if you pick Mode 3, or vice versa.

Whoever is using Mode 4 needs to look at Hamachi and find the IP address of the player they're playing against; it should be right next to their name. In new versions of Redshark, there is a link right underneath Mode 4: "change host IP..." Click that, and in the top-right box full of weird numbers and periods, type in the weird number sequence next to your opponent's name. Click OK, make sure everything is right, then click Start.

Note that you will be playing the deck that is below whichever mode you picked (if you are in Mode 3, you'll be playing the deck on the left - if you are in mode 4, you will be playing the deck on the right).

Uhh R_A explained all of this already buuut...

EDIT: SPEAKING OF STUFF R_A has explained!

In Vista and newer computers, R_A suggests using Run As Administrator to make sure you can open and edit your decks in Redshark - however, if you are a little computer-savvy and get annoyed with that easily, I have another solution.

When you install Redshark and it asks you where to install it, DON'T install in Program Files or Program Files (x86). Go to your Documents folder or your Users folder, and create a "Programs" folder. Install it in there!

Since it's in your documents, you ALWAYS have privileges to create and edit files there. So you don't have to bother running the program as an administrator. However, it will work just as well.
