New to states.

I am going to my first states this year and i have some questions.
I heard that top cut is 16. What does this mean? how do i get into the top cut? what do the top cut people do?
If top cut is 16 does that mean those people are the ones who get the prizes?

Top Cut is the top players based on their win-loss records and their opponents + opponents-opponents win records. 16 People will make it into the top 16. What the top 16 do is they play single elimination games. They play best 2 of 3 games until they lose. Once there is 1 person remaining, that person is declared the winner. The Top cut games are based on a 75 minute clock. As I recall, top 16 all get prizes. Be warned as most states have top cut going late into the night. If you are planning on making top cut (usually X-2 record), get rest and be prepared mentally. The judges do deck checks on all Top cut members before it starts.

so if the top cut is 16 and the top cut comes after the tournoment, what is the structire of the tournoment? isnt it like one game andthe winner for that will determine the top cut?
 
The tournaments are usually somewhere between 5 and 7 rounds (should be more in my opinion). They are swiss play which means that everyone plays all 5 to 7 rounds (unless they don't want to). The best scores (6 wins, 1 loss for example) play top cut. Usually, there will be a massive tie (many people will be 5 wins, 2 losses). The way it works is that the computers take the opponent's win records (all of your opponents' wins divided by the number of games they have played). The people with the highest opponent's win records are placed higher in the tie (as they theoretically played better opponents).

The games in swiss are single games and they have a 30 minute clock to them.
 
What z-man said. Don't spend too much time worrying about top cut, though. Your primary concern should be getting through swiss with a top cut record; without doing that, all testing for top cut is for nought.

Actually, only top 8 get prizes in states. Top 16 get prizes in regional. For masters, there is usually a top 8 or a top 16 if you get lucky or live in an area with a large player base. But for seniors and juniors, there is usually a top 4 or top 2 cut unless you get lucky or live in an are with a large playerbase.
 
So that means that if I go 5-2 and the guy next to me goes 5-2 but he played better players theres really nothing i can do do reach TC?
