Just a little Idea I had. Im sure everyone of you has been watching the news lately and knows whats going on in japan. Afte the earthquake and the tsunami the extend of the catastrophe is something even the news can just slowly wrap their head around. And with the weather turning worse and worse and food stll running out It seems like its getting worse by the minute. Even hospitals run out of supply.

So what can we do? Youve probably know about the various ways to donate money:
http://www.google.com/crisisresponse/japanquake2011.html e.g.

So my idea is that, with states running right now we could try to collect money by selling states prizes and stuff, I definintly know I dont even need cards right now and it just seems like a good thing to do. Maybe we could collect the ebay links and try to spread the word and making something out of it? Giving people the opportunity to get some new cards while also donating money? Maybe even selling other spare cards? I have tons of them and If I can sell some to gain some money to donate Im more then wlling to do so.

Just a few ideas I had in my head, please let me know what you think about it. Ill definitly do this but if other people join in I might make a big thread about it and spread the word on other boards / facebook / etc etc.

I really think this is a great and easy way to collect money for those who really need it right now, and its also somewhat bit symbolic. I think we all have been influenced by japanese culture quite a bit here and at least I am super thankful for that and what pokemon has done for me, and paying a small part back in a situation like this in such a way just seems like a good think to do.

Maybe its a stupid idea but after watching the news all day for the last week I think that maybe we can get something going here.
Please let me know what you think about it =)

I just hope if anything happened to Australia, other people can afford to donate more than a penny to help those who really need it.

Yoshi - This is a really great idea, maybe it could be a good way to put all those Call of Legends boosters to good use. Maybe we could have a thread open on the Auction and Sales house, where people can send any prizes they don't need to a designated seller. Then that person could sell those prizes back to the community, and we donate that money to Japan?

If your house gets swept away by giant waves and your entire town is flooded, I'll be sure to spare a yen for you too.

Definitely willing to donate. Can't exactly paypal it but maybe we could send Japanese leagues English cards or something? That would hopefully brighten up the days of Japanese people who have lost everything in the flood.

The point is to ebay the stuff and send the money ;)
Im sure you dont mean it but sending people in a shelter a pack of pokemon card seems almost cynical ^^"

If it wasn't for the fact that I'm just about flat out broke, I would send money. :/

This is where all the rich people need to step in and donate for me. :p

No I get that, but only sending money is just kind of impersonal imho. If I were a Japanese kid in a shelter I'd very much like something to do; it's sort of like being stuck in the car for days with absolutely nothing to pass the time, only much, much worse.

Yeah we should send money, but something you put thought into is also very nice imo.

I find it shocking how selfish people can be sometimes. Just imagine being stuck under something for days on end, bleeding, hungry, thirsty, in pain, then seeing some Japanese guy laughing and saying what you just said with a ':p' on the end. You make me sick.

the schell family and some of the other LA/MS players did something like this...bring cards and show kids how to play...for families that were displaced and in shelters after hurricane katrina.

the thing is: right now, the donations that are going to be most useful are monetary. i've been watching NHK's disaster coverage (since my cable provider has unscrambled it during the emergency)...and it's just heartbreaking :(

the most pressing needs now are food, water, fuel and medicine. people are living in gyms, arenas and halls with no heat other than small kerosene heaters...and it's SNOWING in the tsunami area.

many many of the people in these shelters are elderly, and suffering from the lack of heat, food and especially their medicines. the infrastructure...roads, railroads, airports, electric/phone/water lines, etc...is shattered in these areas and oftentimes the only way to get supplies in is via helicopter or ship.

bringing in things so the kids have something to do is going to be way down on the priority list for quite a while...so while i understand the wish to help, i doubt actual donations of our cards will be useful :(

i'd guess very few of the kids are experienced enough players that they'd be able to 'know' what the english language equivalent of their cards do. also, our cards would not be playable in their OP, once that resumes.

do not get me wrong: i think it's a great idea to do something to help the country that's given us this game we all love. i know several of the PTOs are planning to collect donations at their states this weekend, and i hope to do something myself at my next event.

but when disasters like this strike, the best way to 'help' is to donate money to reputable agencies rather than to directly donate 'things' which then have to be sorted, shipped and distributed...eating up monies that could go directly to the food, medicine and other necessities of life so desperately needed immediately. ebay auctions or other ways to raise cash to donate to aid agencies will be much more useful in the immediate future.

'mom

Ebay has a really nice option now for Japan donations. I just started going through my store, and I think I'm going to set up a few auctions for a percentage to go to help Japan. I may need money for bills myself, but at least I have a roof over my head. I'd like to do what I can to help out.

What if everyone on the planet was going to donate 1 penny?

What We as a Community can Do

I know some are going to probably hate on this, but mental health is just as important as physical. We know Pokemon has been somewhat ingrained in the Japanese. There are definitely some kids who really enjoy Pokemon affected by this tragedy.

We all have extra cards we aren't going to use or could at least part with, so why don't we amass as many cards as possible (maybe P!P could help out?) and send them as a donation to the people who brought us this game we all love in the first place.

This actually got me interested, so I've done some research on it. Japan's population is about 127 Million, so they represent about 1/48 of the Worlds population. If everyone was to donate even $10 (which is unlikely considering the amount of people that don't donate to causes like this, or are in poverty themselves), that's $470 for each Japanese citizen which runs out quickly with prices of food and immediate shelter, and when you factor in the costs of rebuilding houses, it doesn't look good :frown:. The other problem is that Japan have a huge national debt, over double what the US is currently dealing with, so there isn't a lot of money the government can invest themselves into rebuilding the country.

Keep in mind not all of Japan's citizens need relief, nnaann

It's difficult to judge completely, because you also have to factor out all the children/ people who can't afford to donate that money due to being in poverty themselves. I was guessing that they would roughly cancel each other out, but unless there is any huge change, it would still leave them in trouble anyway.

The problem is that even if you were the richest Japanese person in the world, all the stores are out of necessities you need. (Food/Water/Gasoline/etc)
... well thats what my family there says. Luckily they have farmer-friends to give them food..

@Yoshi-
Awsome idea.
