Top Cut-Time Limit

30+3 has worked out fine for swiss rounds. And we've been doing that somewhat for top cut. However, I think we need an hour and a half for top cut. Both states I've been to had me lose on time in top cut. Has anyone playing a slower deck like Vilegar or Dialga had a problem with this? Some Top Cut games need to have 3 games within them. An hour is not enough time to play 3 games in my opinion.

Please move if in the wrong forum. I wasn't sure where to post this.

I disagree. I think the disadvantage to decks like Vilegar and Lostgar is completely deliberate... I think they want those decks to struggle with the idea of winning in that time limit. JMHO.

I kind of agree with BoF.

If you play a lock deck, it's a fair balance that you have to deal with a problem time limit. That's a known factor when it comes to playing those decks so you make your choice knowing the risks.

i understand time limit in some occasions but at nats and worlds top4 and top2 should not be timed

Top cut has no upper time limit.

21.3. Match Time Limits
Single‐game matches should be a minimum of 40 minutes for Constructed tournaments or 20 minutes for Limited tournaments.

Best‐of‐three matches should have a minimum time limit of 45 minutes, with no maximum time limit. The specific time limit for each round’s matches should be announced by the Tournament Organizer at the outset of the tournament.
With this in mind I sincerely doubt that P!P "want(s) those decks to struggle". What with so many two day events popping up now I would hope those time limits would be extended since the Organizer isn't pressed for time on those occasions.

Wayne, where'd you find that older version of the rules? That 40/20 split was changed for this season.

Bah! I clicked on the wrong download! Here:

21.3. Match Time Limits
Single-game matches should be a minimum of 30 minutes plus 3 turns for Constructed tournaments or 20 minutes plus 3 turns for Limited tournaments.

Best-of-three matches should have a minimum time limit of 45 minutes plus 3 turns, with no maximum time limit. The specific time limit for each round’s matches should be announced by the Tournament Organizer at the outset of the tournament.

Better?

Sourrr grapesss.
You knew your get was slower than others going into the tournament; that's the risk you took.

I agree with Chad. If top cuts were longer it would give decks like vilegar and dialgachomp a much better chance in top cut. If a deck like vilegar has to go in to sudden death to start game three the only chance it has to win is if it is playing mirror. Slower decks deserve a better chance in top cut, like they have in swiss.

Kevin, you can't disagree because you play flygon :)
Anyways, I just feel that a deck should have the seem perks that it would have in swiss. A lot of games go to sudden death in top cut. I just don't think that's right.

Top 16 at Oregon states left us at the venue until 12:30, with hour long rounds.

With, say, hour and a half finals, that's an extra 2 hours, leaving the staff on hand till 2:30. Staff that was already at the event as much as 3 hours before the players to begin with.

Longer top cuts are a no-no in my book. You play a lock/stall/slow deck you should go into the tournament well aware you're going to be crunched for time in top cut. Time is a part of the game, like it or not. Prepare for it, just like you would prepare for Luxchomp, lunch, or a zombie invasion.

But I do not think it's fair to make time THAT much of a factor in the game. It's pretty much taking away the whole point of playing, since it almost always gives the win to the fast decks.

I must say that at larger events the longer rounds would possibly impact the TOs ability to finish the event on schedule.....within reasonable time limits for all age groups......

It shouldn't be about top cut time limits favoring or punishing one deck or another. Does top cut still resemble a best of 3 scenario for games of Pokemon should be the question we're interested in.

Before the 'mostly completed game' rule for game 2, it really DID NOT. Player A could win game 1, player B could win the match via 2 prize cards (the first of game 2, sudden death).

Obviously, untimed would be 'best' for each and every player, but it damages the timeliness of the event. I think 45 minutes is insufficient, but it is only a floor. I'd like if PTOs communicated the intended length of top cut before hand so people could prepare accordingly.

Nothing in life is perfect. This isn't a professional sport. Make the best of what you have. It's free.

Easy fix, IMO. Just limit each game in multi-game matches to 30+3.

JMO, but I think each game should be independently timed in best of 3. It just seems plain weird that single games cannot go beyond 30+3 in swiss, but in the play-offs, the first game can actually go to 60+3 (or 90+3).

Just imagine. In the NBA playoffs (supposing it was best of 3), the first game is 90 minutes. Game 2 is 30 minutes. Game 3 is 5 minutes (sudden death). That would get "old" real fast.

Poor attitude. Pro basketball players are the best in the world, in our community we have the best Pokemon players in the world. For most of us, the OP experience isn't free, there is money for cards and gas at a minimum. Top cut time limits often don't cost anyone anything, so arguing people should be happy with them because they're free doesn't really make sense.

not only that, but I'd be willing to bet that most venues aren't willing to let events run there long past midnight. I know that Illinois pretty much needed to get out of the venue by 10pm, and Missouri was in a retail location that seemed like they were on their last legs when I had to leave at 10pm with the finals still to go.

You have to balance competitive play with venue restrictions. Sometimes, the venue restrictions have to win out. But the 1 hour balance has been there for years with little complaint. I believe that Nationals went 1.5 hours this past year. But they also had a massive venue for 4 days and planned specifically for this type of round structure, running several of the top cut rounds on Saturday so that Sunday wouldn't take too long. States generally don't have that luxury.

Really? What you describe is a hobby, not to be confused with a profession, and as such you really shouldn't get all worked up about it. After all, you do hobbies for fun.
