Prize support is disappointing

It's disappointing to see magic have $30,000 prize purses at very similarly sized events with 1st place getting $3,500 stretching down $200 for top 64.

Most of us are still gonna play if they didn't have any prizes at all, but we really deserved to be treated better.

so guess what? since the US was the only country with a top 128, that top 128 would almost certainly NOT get cards!

why, you ask?

...because of the simple fact that a top 128 card would be EVEN MORE RARE than a top 4 card. do the math: top 4 x 3 age groups = 12 cards per nationals x 26 nationals in 2012 = 312 'top 4' stamped cards WORLDWIDE vs. 128 'top 128' cards WORLDWIDE. sorry, not going to happen, folks...

jmho.

There's a simple solution to this so-called "problem." Stamp the country name (or a small flag) and the placement. Problem solved.

slayer_chaos, you can't fairly make that comparison between Magic and Pokemon. You don't pay a $20 entry fee to each event you attend. If you did, you'd definitely see a drastic increase in prize support.

..which would then increase the setup charges for those stamps by 26 times, as each different country's stamps would need a different die...PLUS the cost of the different dies for the 'deeper' US top cut...

everybody needs to stop treating Magic in a way that isn't a matter of "different game don't use it as an example or guide" when in fact they have this whole thing figured out.

There's a reason I'm leaving competitive pokemon

I'd like to see some kind of top cut card. But once a balance between all the competing requirements has finally been produced I have no doubt that there would be complaints from players that it wasn't exclusive enough and didn't recognise their achievement.

Whatever it might look like it would not have the kudos of the worlds Txx cards.

There's a reason I'm leaving competitive pokemon

Different audience, different competitive structure, different community, different card backs, different game.

Pokemon will NOT see growth in its target audience by moving to a competitive structure similar to magic - significant entry fees for higher prize support. I think you need to get this whole thing figured out.

And if I had a Golden Catcher for every time I heard someone say they were quiting over this or that terrible travesty wrought by the merciless overlords at TPCi, I would use them as coasters.

Tournaments aren't "free"

I pay to travel to events, buy cards for my decks, and get little to no return on my investment. If I wanted to play this game for fun, I could shift my focus to strictly third party online play, where at least I break even on what I put into the game.

So meeting and playing with people isn't a return.

Using that ideology absolutely no hobby is worth your time or money, because you can just go find another similar game for free. The point of games isn't to make money, it's to have fun and interact with other people. This simple fact seems to be lost or forgotten on a lot of people here.

If getting a return on an investment is your priority, then no, Pokemon is not the game for you. There are many reasons to play this game, but that is not one of them.

In fact, I question whether playing any TCG is a wise choice for the shrewd investor who wishes to see a healthy profit.

There's an even simpler solution.

Produce cards that simply say "Top Cut". Or something similar. Maybe "Finalist" or something like that. I don't know what the exact wording would be, but something that every player getting into the Single Elim rounds would receive that people NOT getting into Single Elim would NOT get.

You can't please everybody all the time. But this gets closer.

Not saying that some posters haven't tried to see why this might occur , or to see through the unfortunate obfuscation of NDAs etc. But there is no denying that it is a GIMMEE MORE thread.

Of course this is a "give me more" thread, but in general, it's far from an entitlement thread. Even if the OP is a guy who does feel entitled, there are a lot of questions that stem from finishing top 32 in the world's largest, second most prestigious event, only to get less prize support than a City Champion would.

"Wut" indeed.

You have to understand that people generally don't get a monetary return for hobbies. I don't get monetary return for playing basketball or baseball. In fact, I have to pay $450 a year to attend a recreational softball league.

If you're looking to make solid return on investment, then there is no competitive card game that's right for you. Try investing in stocks. I play Pokemon and have an investment portfolio. The things I'm looking to get out of Pokemon and my investment portfolio are completely different.

If you're looking to make new friends, play a game you love, and get recognition for your performance, then Pokemon has probably the best trading card game community in the world. If you're looking to make money, then the TCG market is not the best thing to invest in; none of the TCGs give any substantial monetary return compared to what you could get in the financial markets.

I would've thought the promos for nats top cut would be cumulative, similar to tropical beach; e.g. you win nats, you get 8 stamped copies of the promo: T128, T64, T32, T16, T8, T4, T2, Winner.

I think the only way that the prize support issue can possibly be solved would be if a number of individuals would dedicate their time and resources to set up a secondary tournament circuit for the game where there are entry fees and decent prizes.

Oh wait that operation would probably get shut down pretty quickly by the higher ups. Time to scrap that idea and remain hopeless because SDPokemom is saying all our ideas are rubbish

I don't think TPCI are stopping anyone from trying this.

Seems a bit unfair to just assume that they would and then bash them for it. Why not wait for the response?

Reason it hasn't happened is likely because no-one has the time and money to risk on something that may not even work.

Get out of here.

15-20 for that small increase? Please

EDIT: Yours is feasible with $10 being the price at Nationals, but very close to breaking even. That's why $15 sounds better in their eyes. I did not count trip costs too, which is why $15 is even highly likely with those prizes.

The huge difference between the two games is, most (99% of) magic players have to pay to play. For everything.

Compared to Magic, we get so much more for putting so little in. Yet, the tournament in question is Nationals, which the prizes are grossly unfair for in my opinion. Getting nothing for top 64 just isn't right. Make us pay for that one event, I just want to see the best 64 players in the United States get rewarded for their success.

In fact, those end of the year play points that were some kind of cruel "reward" moved almost no one and affected almost nothing. Some 3 or so people were actually affected by Championship Points at US nationals. I was watching everyone like a hawk, it was quite a surprising effect to see over the course of a couple weeks.

Pokemon is like a freebie game when it comes to tournaments. U don't have to pay for anything. Plus if u win guess what free vacation and tons of money spent on tpci's side to send people places. This is like telling ur grandpa he sucks for giving u an android instead of an iPhone! Do it for the love of the game. Not for the free stuff. Do it for the prestige!
