Worst Worlds Ever!

I used to share a similar view about the quality of players doing well at U.S. nationals. I was disgusted when one of my best friends lost to a scrub in top 32 who was lucky to make cut, and lost the round after( he even had bianca in his deck! humiliating for my friend). I felt that a lot of this format did not involve skill, and to a degree i still think that to be true. I attributed it to the fact that conservative players, starting with myself and going all the way to the top like pooka, were getting hosed by the fact junk arm existed, and players could make huge gambles with large amounts of outs and constantly get away with it, even when sometimes they shouldn't. I was happy when harrison made his silly play and lost, because someone finally got what they had coming for trying it over the smart play once again.

I am still glad I didn't go to worlds to try my luck at the grinder.

As for the quality of players, I think it's safe to say that there are enough good players out there to be able to say that no matter which ones don't attend each year, the majority will be very good players. I think that this year, the ones who did best were the ones who adapted the quickest to the way the format worked : burn and set up fast, take the first ex kill ect ect. After playing a game and losing to kevin nance, I truly got the feeling that there was a way to understand the format and do well accordingly. Some players just "got it" this year. Next year, it will most likely be very different, with conservation somewhat more encouraged. I wish I wasn't going to college, otherwise I'd be down to play all year.

Can't say I agree with the CP thing yet either. I hate the concept of having to appear at so many tournaments when you should be good enough to qualify just through winning the big ones. ELO's only true flaw was that when the format became flippy or luck based in any way, it became a problem for consistent players. CP was still probably better this year overall.

Pokedad1, has it ever dawned on you that in the past THREE THREADS you have created, you have yet to receive a single positive response from even one person? Have you ever realised that the majority is against you? And do you seriously, honestly believe that all the trash you posted in your original post is absolutely right and reasonable? To be honest, I'm still uncertain whether or not you're a troll. If you are, you have been probably the most successful one in Pokegym history.

I honestly can't believe that someone your age - someone old enough to be a parent of a youth - is throwing tantrums about who should or shouldn't have won Worlds. Your thread title, "Worst Worlds Ever!" is a downright, indiscriminate, categorical INSULT to not just the entire player base, but also all the tournament organisers and judges who took their time and effort to make the annual World Championships an enjoyable experience for players all over the world. Not to mention the people designing the trophies, forking out the prizes, managing the event venue, etc. You whining about your "ideal" players not winning - and worse - degrading the prowess of the winners (Igor doesn't deserve the win because his opinion misplayed? I'd like to see you concede every single game in which your opponent misplayed, since you're totally undeserving of the win by your logic!) violates the Spirit of the Game so much that I really can't find a suitable adjective to describe your lack of sportsmanship!

When I was a child, my dad already taught me to appreciate what I have and what others do for me. He would tell me off whenever I unfairly complained about something not going my way. Well, I find it really astounding and pathetic that you actually need the younger generation - people around the age of your son - to educate you on this matter. Please never, ever, ever let your son get on Pokegym. I am genuinely worried about how his self-esteem would be affected if he knew his father possesses less maturity than him.

The only really awful thing of worlds was doing top 16 with 127 masters. =/ I think 29th place was 5-2, top 32 would've been perfect. I really think this needs to be fixed if we are going to continue to have an awkward 110-127 players.

Everything else in this thread is silly. The 2 Darkrai lists that made the final were both really good in the mirror. (Igor's Terrakions and Harrison's multiple Potions). With 7/8 Darkrai in top 8, this worked well.

Would you like some cheese with that WHINE?

Every post that you have made on these forums, every single one, has been to bash, whine, complain, and otherwise make a nuisance of yourself. And I don't think you even realize it.

Your kid was not good enough to make Worlds. That's tough. I feel for him. But to come out and bash every single player at the World Championships is nothing aside from pathetic. It makes you look petty, juvenile, and simply idiotic.

Grow up.

You are old enough to have a kid of your own. Learn that the world does not cater to your every whim. You do not get everything that you want just because you want it. You have to go out and EARN it.

Your kid learned that lesson this year. He will try harder, compete better, and he will be in a better place to compete and perform well next year.

You obviously have never learned. Nor will you likely ever, given the attitude you have displayed on these boards.

The players at the World Championships are the absolute best players in the world. How do I know this? Pooka went sub-.500. Ness missed the cut. Chuck isn't even playing. These are the best players I've ever had the opportunity to compete against. And they couldn't Top Cut against this field.

As far as the misplay in the Finals? Your point? Players make mistakes. All players. It doesn't matter how good, how experienced they are. I've seen all of the best players in the world make massive mistakes at crucial moments.

Do you want to know what makes them the best players in the world? They don't blame ANYBODY ELSE for their failures, like you are doing. They take responsibility for their actions, they learn from them, and they grow from them.

If you want your kid to become one of the best players in the world, here's my advice for you.

Never, ever, EVER talk to him again.

Do not take part in any of his activities.

Leave the room when he's playing.

You are the worst influence this kid could possibly have.

Have the kid study the players in the videos, both on Top Cut and on the World Championship stage. They know how to play this game with honor, integrity, and spirit. Note that between every game of the VGC finals, Ray Rizzo shook the hand of his opponent. Note that every single player bowed their head to their opponent at one point or another. Look at the way they interact with each other.

And contrast that with how you are interacting with every single player both on these boards and in the World Championships.

Next time, before you start posting trash like this, take a moment, have your wife and your kid look it over, preferably multiple times, so that you may learn what it takes to converse with another human being.

Check my sig. I posted it last year. It's not exactly how I'd do it now, what with the removal of the Top Cut from BRs. Given that, I'd make BRs look like yours. But I don't think the others are too far off what they should be.

No Fair! You Stole My Line!!!

no, he already is better than probably most posting here, and nothing will change next year ... we still can't take him to multiple battle roads and marathons to get enough cheap points to get an invite ... you must be one of those who are benefiting from this broken system and obviously don't want it to improve ... and don't worry, if nothing changes, my child decided to not play until it is fixed ...

I've run out of Thanks but . . . Bullados - that was an awesome post. Absolutely spot on and I hope pokedad1 has the sense to take it to heart.

... Nope.

pokedad1-just stop i think at this point your embarrassing yourself, there's absolutely no need to bash all the players who went to worlds regardless of country, how they won, what deck they used, etc. and to be honest at this point i feel like it's at that point where your son would tell you to stop. so please just do that. i(unlike most people on this thread) have no idea who you are or who your son but if you just won enough tournaments in your area you wouldn't need to go to a marathon.

You know, pokedad1, there's a LOT wrong with what you said that I could spend hours proving wrong, but I'm going to focus in on this.

no, he already is better than probably most posting here,

Really now? Reeeeeeally now? I'm going to just go ahead and scroll up the page and see what accomplishments these people have.

Let's see... there's a 3rd place at Worlds, a UK National Champion who also got Top 32 at Worlds, a two-time Worlds competitor, and a one time World competitor. Oh hey, and a Top 8 Nationals qualifier just ninjaed me.

And that's just on this page.

So yeah, don't go around degrading other people and assuming that they suck just because they don't agree with your messed up view of the game.

In your opinion. Seems strange, but, Worlds invites are not given out by TPCI asking parents if they think their kid is good enough. If it was, I doubt even Wildwood NJ could cope with the overwhelming number of entrants.

I'm sorry your child has 'decided' not to play next season. The only person who loses out by that decision is him.

... Nope.

Yeah, I was being way over optimistic there. Should have known better by now.

how about if you win cities, states, top cut regionals as well as nationals, but your parents don't have the time/money to shuttle you around over half the country to play in multiple battle roads, cities and states and now cities having week long tournaments like chicago. That gives others a huge advantage. If you can travel alot or live in a big city to do marathons you have a huge advantage over those who can't.

To be considered a Top 40 player in North America at the end of 9 months of tournaments:

Winning a City Championship is not enough, there are hundreds of those.
Winning a State Championship is not enough, there are 50 of those.
Winning a Regional Championship is certainly something, which is why those Top 2 finishers get a paid trip to go compete at Nationals. But Top Cutting is not enough.
Winning a National Championship is certainly something, which is why those Top 8 finishers are invited to play at Worlds and the Top 4 get a paid trip to make sure they have a chance to compete. But Top Cutting is not enough.

There are players and families that are indeed more dedicated to the game than you can afford to be, and thus take advantage of the opportunity to gather the points necessary to be considered one of the Top 40 in the long run. If you can't afford to do that, then your son still has a chance to make it to Worlds by simply finishing Top 8 at Nationals.

Pokémon has clearly said this past year was a learning year, to test the CP system. Until they post the Championship Series information for this new season, no one knows yet if it will change.

fact- also pokedad you previously said something like i can't go to a ton of br's or cc's marathons and not get cheap point to get an invite etc. okay i didn't quite get top 40(44th, but for purposes of my argument it's easy to see that i could have got t40 if i didn't go on cruise control for spring br's)
How i got 47 points-
ONE from BR's
16 from CC's(only got 4 out 5 BFL, 2 T8, 1 T4, 1 win)
10 from Regs(1 1st)
10 from States(1 T16, 1 T32, 1 T8)
10 from Nats(1 T8)
so clearly if i had say another t8 at CC's(which i was very close to btw, 2 9ths, 1 10th finish) i just took advantage of the system by racking up all the easy points and therefore got an invite not b/c i did well at major events but b/c i got 20 points from BR's/CC's in a competitive area which had 40+ at several autumn br's and almost every cc. yep did it the easy way.

I don't think there's anything to fix here; there needs to be some sort of cut-off. It stinks that 16 players missed top cut because the tournament was one player short, but if you dropped it to 127, then you'd have the same issue if 126 players entered the tournament. There's always going to be a "top player not to make the cut." It sucks but it's the only way to be fair.

RM

P.S. I just started playing earlier this year, but I want to play competitively this coming season. Where will I find the rules for tournament play/CPs/etc.?
