Ok, the full doc with all the info (and trust me, there's a bunch of changes incoming) isn't ready yet. That should be up pretty soon, but I just talked w/ Dave and he's fine with me announcing the following:

Next years World Championship invites will not be based on a Top X system. There will be a cutoff. Everyone with more points than the cutoff will make the list. No one will bump anyone off, no one getting an invite via points will prevent anyone else from getting an invite from points.

No other info is ready at this time, this includes point adjustments, the cutoff, etc. Wait for the doc!

Somebody please Front Page this post! This is spectacular news, and mebbe it'll get some people to stop posting stupid things!

This news is... AMAZING.

Seriously, this gets rid of so many problems. People in this thread are arguing that they're bumping other good players out of the Top 40. Well, now, it doesn't even matter. Plus it gives players a more defined goal to look forward to, something which I really like. FANTASTIC decision.

So happy with this decision.

Awesome stuff Exo! Can't wait to see all of the changes you guys have made to the system for next year. Hopefully we get the announcement soon so I don't have to heckle the answer out of you at PAX :p

This is a huge announcement, and one that I see making the whole community incredibly happy. Thank you for this post!

Thank you SOOOOOO much Dylan. This is one of the best announcements ever made by the pokemon company.

Wow, a cutoff. I cant imagine the now probable scenario for several players where they walk into Nationals knowing they need a certain result. No pressure! lol

Its worse under ELO or the 2011 system. In 2010 nats, I walked in knowing that the only way I could get my invite was by going 5-0 drop or better. It wasn't set in stone, but my math told me it was that way... ELO pressured players into not losing which is much worse than pressuring players into winning.

I think there was a lot of paranoia (at least for me) over the 2011 CP system. I always wanted to stay above the curve, but I rarely ever knew where that curve was based on the fact that CP was new. It was hard to predict how much the top40 would change with each event. Now, with a flat bar, we all know exactly what we have to do to make worlds

If I had to guess, the cutoff will be 50. Nice, easy number :) I could see the cutoff being different for masters as for seniors and juniors. Also, a dynamic cutoff would seem kinda necessary for non-American nations. IDK what the "cutoff" was this year, but I've been told that events are scarce in some parts of the world, so getting to 50 CP (for example) might be difficult. IDK... any foreign players want to chime in on that one?

Overall, great change! Very logical and great for the game... unless the cutoff is something absurd like 70 CP. THAT would be a challenge!

I can't wait to see the changes. I hope they are good because not all change is a good thing.

This is such a great move, now it will get interesting to see when the rest of this info will be released. Mainly looking to see how high the bar is set, as well as how the premier events are weighed in terms of point distribution. But taken at face value of what we just found out, this is excellent news. Very smart move, TPCi.
