Our Modified format HP - DP. Does it work at all?

I've been testing this format a lot lately, and I must say I'm very worried about our DP2-less fall.

For every new Modified format that comes around, POPs R&D developement do a lot of testing, to make sure the format works, and has everything it needs to build healthy decks. I'm sure they did this for HP On too, but they must have tested it with DP2. Because without DP2, this format is WEIRD.

Having no Holon Farmer really hurts every Stage 2 deck. In the USA, you can use the superior Night Maintenance instead, but we can't. I am having tremendous problems making any deck containing any LvX work. With 3 Stage 2 and 1 LvX, your chances of winning are very tiny if just ONE of your Stage 2s are prized.

If one of them are prized, your opponent only needs to KO two of your Stage 2s, and you're left with nothing. Farmer or Night Maintenance could've saved you and help you create some resistance for your opponent while he/she tries to draw his/her remaining 4 prize cards. But without these cards, you've basically lost long before all prizes have been drawn.

How do you survive this weird format? Lots of side-attackers? Only fast Stage 1 decks? Europe and other DP2-less countries will see a fall with decks built very differently than those in the the US, I think (not just the difference that they don't include DP2 cards).

I agree with you the HP-DP1 format is difficult.
While you can get basic nrg's back out of the discard in 3 ways (stone/reycle/restore) there is no way to get a pokemon back.
(Unless I missed an option)

I think it's going to be you play 4 or you have a big problem.
Losing Mr. briney also hurts, SSU is in no way a replacement.

I think we will see a lot of 4-4 Lucario 4-3-4 Machamp decks just because of this, or maybe Noctowl will fly around.

Agreed.

I'm almost tempted to petition POP to make a Europe-only "promo" version of Night Maintenance which we can hand out in hundreds at Leagues all over the continent. :((

Well that isn't a bad idea, why don't you try.
It would at least make the format better imo.
I also really hope we will get an equal international format and not Country X has HP - A and country Y has HP - B, that would really suck.

Im always interested in different formats and thats why I troll the Intl forums. Just some addition has anyone tried DP1 Drifblum? You can get a combination of any 5 Pokemon or Supporters back from your discard pile and shuffle them into the deck. Granted you have to waste an attack but it does have a hefty 80 HP Any good?

Thanks for the interest, Johnny. I've considered Drifblum, but my big concern with it is this: You will only ever put it in the active position very late-game, to get those Pokémon back that you need to get your last prizes. However,

when it's this late in the game, your opponent also has few prizes left, meaning it would be a very critical move to "give" him/her the prize for the Driflum. Sadly, I could only see it working if your opponent is way behind on prizes and your winning chances are already good. :(

John / Drifblim - Like you said, you spoil an attack for it which is bad (to compare with using a trainercard). in a way this is the same for Noctowl.

We actually never had played (untill Worlds) DX-DP1, so we will move from DX-PK to HP-DP1 which is a big difference.
OF course we will get decks working, but it's going to be weird.

He Eskill our format is going to be HP-DP1 not DX-DP1 as in you title.

We can use DP2 when it is released. However, DP1 has only just been released in Europe , DP2 has no announced European release date that I'm aware of.

POP have yet to tell us what the modified format for the rest of the world will be.

POP announcement for 2007/2008 said:
Due to the varied release schedule of the Pokémon TCG: Diamond & Pearl set, the Modified format will vary slightly from country to country until each market returns to a more unified release schedule. As new sets are released, Pokémon Organized Play will update the Modified format list on a country-by-country basis.

Ian is right- HP-DP1 is not confirmed yet, though I can't really see anything changing much.

The lack of retrieval is a pain- i can only suggest playing super consistent decks! Oh and Old Rod

The last thing I heard is that the release date of MT has been changed from november 7 to october 10. So within 2 months MT will be modified legal in Europe too.

Why does it matter? It's not like your opponent has the same problems that you do?

Sure it makes comebacks tougher, but I dont think comebacks have been that big ever since pow! and admin rotated out anyway.

WHich is why It makes this topic all the more important. Yes our opponent has the same problem but if we have the 1up on them on knowing what to do with thwat we have thats one more trick up our sleeve.

How did you get Pokemon out of the discard before Delta Species?

There was a long stretch when you couldn't get Pokemon back from the discard.
People have just forgotten than and gotten used to Farmer letting them do it.

There was a long stretch from when Nightly Garbage Run (Night Maintenance's doppleganger) left the modified format to when we got Farmer.

Or am I forgetting some other, reliable way to get them back

Old Rod, anyone?

Aaah, that's embarrasing. And I can't even edit the title to fix my error. +_+ I meant HP-DP1, of couse.

As Magic_Umbreon mentioned, we did have Pokémon Retriever. It was a very important card in a lot of decks. I also think features like lvX makes you more reliant on these kind of cards than we were before.
