OK this is going to be a bit long but I have an important point to make and because I just relized it all started here I decided to end it here and maybe save some people along the way. Here is the first day I got World of Warcraft http://pokegym.net/forums/showthread.php?t=18915

If you look at posts i started playing world of warcraft on 5/10/05. This game took me over, I lost control and over 2 years of my life. I dident mean to happen, I was at a pokemon tourney and my friend was playing it in the lan room during lunch, he let me play for a few min. I thought to myself wow this game is kinda fun, I think ill buy. So I did, but what I dident know was that its an endless grind, there is no way to win the game and everything you do in it is pointless. About a month later I graduated high school, but instead of going right to collage I took a year off, want to know what I did? I played wow and raided for a year. a year passed and I had all but quit pokemon, all my friends from pokemon had become as obsessed as I had, leaving the house became a chore as I wanted to be on so I dident miss out door raid bosses or raid invites. I had never been like this about anything but slowly over time it became my life. 15 months had passed and September came again. The game was getting old after 15 months of nonstop play, nothing new, same old stuff. By this point I was in the best guild on the server, still putting up with loot problems and guild drama. I stopped paying for my account and started collage. First term was great, no problem, it was great to be around real people again, but then 3 months later right after Christmas the expansion was released, all new stuff, all new loot and levels, what is the harm in just getting it and leveling up to 70, you know, mess around with the old gang and not raid......big mistake, 2nd term i got 2 Ds and an F and 3rd i only passed one class. Why? Because of WoW. Once again I found myself sucked in, I couldent stop. This is the power of the game, you lose track of time and your goals shift to in game goals. There is no such thing as playing in free time for fun. I have seen too many people I know start playing this game. Now September has come again. I stopped playing wow a month ago and im doing well again, but a new expansion, Wrath of the Lich King comes out in less than 6 months. You can not imagine how much even now i want to play it. I want it more than any real life goal because the real world can no longer live up to the world blizzard has created. You can be a whole new person and hide in a full fledge fake world. I refuse to buy this all new and improved wow because I know if I do its another 6-12 months of my life I will never get back. If I dont stop this now all my friends will be graduating collage and getting real lives and what will I have? Nothing thats what.

And just so people know im not the rare case where someone becomes addicted, this is the norm for just about everyone I have ever played with in game or the people I know in real life, Rusty_Bucket can attest to that as well as he is a good friend of mine, who has played just as much wow as I have, or the south park episode that just won an emmy, that is another real example of what happens to a large majority of people who get hooked on wow, I for one know my body looked a bit better before I lost all interest in things like working out or jogging farther than my fridge to grab another soda.

If you want to know what snapped me out of it, what made me decide its just not worth it, its when my good friend and fellow OR pokemon player Cason AKA AbsolutelyNobody died at the age of 15. I know he was never as addicted as I was, he had lots of friends, good grades, in fact he had the most potential out of all the people in our circle of friends but we got him into wow and he did play a lot. A lot of his free time was spent leveling his warrior, then his priest, then getting them gear. When he died I thought a long time about if I was to go tomorrow, would I be happy with how I lived my life. Would he regret all the time he spent playing World of Warcraft when he could have been hanging out and spending that time with his family and friends. I know I would hate myself for wasting years on something so stupid after putting it in that context and I decided I could not play again.

Im sorry if this post has become a downer and im not even sure if I should post it here but I do see posts about Warcraft and becuase my first time I talked about WoW was here on the gym, I thought I would make the last time here as well.

To sum up this long post its not a knock to anyone who plays WoW, Im not saying everyone who plays it will become so addicted they will lose sight of real life obligations. What I am saying is that of the 5-10 people I know in real life who where converted into playing this game (some of them by me, please forgive me /beg) I would say more than half went through a point or are going through it now where that stupid video game is where the day begins and ends. So if you are thinking of just trying the 14 free day trial or want to start because your friends do it, don't. Your better off not knowing what its all about, take it from me. Someone with 3 70s 2 60s and 311 days 16 hours played.

Oh, thank god I didn't start playing. Thank the stars I didn't get an account. Thank... thank everybody! This settles the fact in my mind that WoW is nothing more than a time-leeching brain-sapping life-draining embodiment of evil (no offense to any players of the game). Now all we have to do is wait for some guy who not only fell into the game and managed to pull himself back together out of it, but also has the cahones to sue Blizzard and win. If he can pull it off, more and more people will and.. but I'm getting ahead of myself fin my plans to destroy WoW without ruining the chances of a continued Starcraft series. Congrats on quiting the addiction bro, and sorry about your friend.

Wow, this is.....Wow.

Im sorry about your freind and everything, but you say that WoW is addicting, but it's not. I say it is from time to time, but as a joke. There isn't really anything about it that addicts you. It's your choice to play or not to play. To make a post telling people not to play a game based on your choice to become addicted to it, in my opinion is pretty dumb. I play WoW and I'm not addicted. Want to know why? because I choose not to be.Once again I am sorry about your freind, but this post is pretty dumb.

I still want to play it one of these days for fun anyways. I highly doubt any mmorpg could make me that addicted to even abandon Pokemon as my prime-time hobby (besides, I rarely have the time to run some marathon of playing WoW anyways, I'm lucky if I can even find time to train Pokemon these days).

But anyways, basically never lose sight of what's important is the moral here.

Some people have the self-control to avoid the addiction. Then again, some people have the self-control to quit smoking without the patch. If you can control yourself, then great, but don't deny that people can get addicted. That's the reason why my mom ate a ton of lollipops when she quit. Addictions are rarely just physical, they're psychological too.

if you were any good at WoW you would be addicted, true story lulz.

I've been playing Final Fantasy XI a long time now myself and for a long time I did let it take over my life - mostly when I didn't have anything better to do at the time anyway.

It's just a matter of learning when to stop. FFXI is even worse than WOW in that regard because nearly anything you ever do will take a minimum 3 hour sitting, lol.

Well, not quite everything but a large portion.

I've come and gone from my MMO days. It was fun, having something to work towards each day. I'm happy to have done it, and happy to see it gone. Now it's FPS's chance to shine!

So I did, but what I dident know was that its an endless grind, there is no way to win the game and everything you do in it is pointless.

Wait, you got into an MMO expecting that there'd be a defined end? That's... pretty illogical. The game makes most of its money on monthly fees, so making people stop paying makes no sense.

I'm not trying to mock you here, I'm just... pointing out the extremely obvious.

Wow, this is.....Wow.

Ya think? I'm just wondering if those puns are intentional or not...

If you can control yourself, then great, but don't deny that people can get addicted.

You also can't deny that the only addition is psychological. You can have the lack of self-restraint required to balance it with life, but you've still got only yourself and your inability to do so to answer to.

In short, when it comes to things like WoW addiction, to borrow a line from the PSX version of Final Fantasy Tactics, "blame yourself or god." Harsh but ultimately true.

FFXI is even worse than WOW in that regard because nearly anything you ever do will take a minimum 3 hour sitting, lol.

For me, the worst I ever do are like... five-hour long sessions in Sky farming water/diorite, and occasionally trying and failing to get dlegs to drop. :frown: Also levelling my {Pankration}mon. But thankfully that's not very attention-intensive.

EDIT: Edited because I just got the drop on dhead. I haven't as of this writing found a non-gouging price on the cursed kabuto though. :frown:

But aside from that I don't play the game as much as I used to, so I consider it a fair trade.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I meant by that.

For the record, the "wow" wasn't a pun.

I agree with Marril, if anyone cant tell that from the similarity in our posts.

I play WoW I'm not addicted "shrugs" it's one of the better mmo's out there. People can be just addicted to FF or city of heroes or guild wars as to WoW but only WoW gets attacked.... stupid eh

I've played SWG, Oblivion, and others, and WoW is the best.

I'm not addicted to it to the point that I don't do any school, or do anything and waste me life on it. I play only after dinner to eat time, and I'm a 57 rogue. People who have no self-control over them selves will get sucked into the game, literally playing 24/7. I have not, and I've been playing for months now.

WoW gets infinitely more press in general because it's the big huge craze, like Everquest before it. Better games like FFXI or CoH get less press because there are fewer idiots playing them who do things like spend a hundred hours straight in an internet café and die.

I used to be addicted to WoW.

Now I'm addicted to Pokemon instead

But that's an improvement. Pokemon gets me out of the house. Just wish it didn't cost so much

I still hit WoW a couple nights a week, but nothing like I used to when I was clinically depressed. Now that was a year of my life I'll never get back.

Mmmm I don't have a positive comment on this topic, except that Oblivion > WoW (especially due to the fact Oblivion has an end and doesn't make you fail your life for multiple years, whoops)

I play Battleon
The graphics are so cheap and the game play so laughable its impossible to become addicted

I have heard horror stories like this, and i am sorry it happened to you wolf
I can only hope you are able to get your life back on track

I stopped playing WOW but I know where you are coming from.

It's not only about self control but Wow has so many addictive elements, I found myself playing an entire day of the game (I thought I was in control). I gave up the game because I really didn’t find the game fun anymore.
