Problems with top cut at BRs?

At an event I went to on Sunday, I went 5-0 during swiss and sat down to play top cut. But then there was a problem with the computer which didn't let us do top cut. The TO was very apologetic, but had us do top 4 anyway and recorded the results unofficially. He said they would try to get the top 4 games added to premier rating later. I lost in top four and didn’t play for 3/4. There were around 20 ppl in masters at this event.
I’ve had similar things happen at other events. I was second after 4 rounds of swiss at another event. There were eight people there and the computer did not do a top cut.
Also, at both of these events the computer didn't say what a top cut would be during the tournament.
Has this happened to any1 else?
Do you think that doing the unofficial top cut for prizes but probably not points was right?

If they don't check off the box for doing a top cut when setting up the tournament, this can happen.
POP's IT person can take the manual results from the top cut they ran and manually add it into the results, so running it on paper is a valid solution to the error.

Well, I assume that Pokepop got it right, but a few things. I beleive that if a certian number of players drop the Top Cut reduces in the software for some reason. I know that isnt the reason why that happened. However, BRs shouldnt have 3/4 matches as you imply since it is on the website as such.

Drew, unless the rules has changed with the new season and TOM 1.26 (I don't believe that it has) the tournament structure (rounds and top cut) are determined at the start of the tournament . Adding players or dropping players does not change the tournament structure. The only way the tournament structure alters is when sufficient players drop to prevent a valid swiss pair from being found.

[ Hmm I've just thought of an awkward case: 12+ players T4 cut then drop all but three players at the end of the fourth swiss round. Not that it is ever likely to occur in practice]

Well, for T4 you need 13 players or more. We had a BR last year, when we had 17 players in MA. We had 5-6 players drop in the last 3 rounds bringing the total to 11/12. The software changed the Top Cut from 4 to 2.

Drew I just tried it out..

16 players T4 cut

I dropped 6 players at the end of round 4 (leaving 10 in the final standings) and it was still a T4 cut.

The new software may have fixed the glitch. I was at the event last year, and the computer did do a top 2 cut with 16-ish players starting the event. Does TOM tell you at the begining of the event what the top cut is going to be?

It must of been adressed and fixed then, but trust me, it happened more than once last year at BR events in our area.

Prof magma: Yes there is a tournament report that I print out once registration is closed and the player roster has been posted. I add details such as expected finish time and lunch break.
Drew: not mistrusting you at all. It never happened to me doesn't prove that it didn't happen to someone else :)

There was no top cut at the last 2 Battle Roads I went to (Lancaster and Bakersfield). The same tournament organizer ran and judged each of them. He intentionally did not do top cut. At the Bakersfield one there was four different people that ended up being 3-1 in the end, and though I won, I feel that the others with 3-1 records got screwed. The only reason I won was because of Tiebreaker2s, (which is the total win % of the people you played against) were like 4% better than that of the 2nd place person. The other people that went 3-1 performed just as well (if not better) than I did, and the only reason they didnt win was due to something that is completely out of their control. dumb.

How many people were in your division at these BRs?
Without knowing that, it's impossible to say if there should have been a top cut or not

Well, I went to the Fountain Valley BR and there were only 10 Masters Division players there. They still did Top 2. And at the Rancho Cucamonga BR, there were 20 Masters and they did Top 4.

At the ones I was talking about in my other post, there were at least 12 in each Masters. With no Top Anything. Both of those were judged by the same judge/organizer so this leads me to believe that he just sucks at what he does.

You can click on a button on the tournament's page on the POP website to report it.
If you think a top cut should have been run and wasn't, and it was done more than once, report them.

I think a bigger "problem" is the 3-4+ BRs I've seen from my favorite part of the country getting 6 rounds a piece. That shouldn't even be legal. I hope this is fixed by Cities, or we're going to see inflated ratings for "more privelged" areas of the country =\

My bad and my apologies to all the players. There should have be top 4-2-2 at Lancaster and top 2 at Bakersfield.

It could be that I'm very bad at this, as you say. Since you seem to be a very experienced player Zack, calculating stuff and all, and had even been to a BR, you could have let me know. Or, you could have tipped one of your truly gentlemanly and sportsmanlike pals, and they could have let me know. I mean those compliments sincerely.

Zack, its totally on me and not your responsibility. I'm just saying, if you were sitting there thinking that, it would have been cool for you to tip me off.

I sincerely hope you, Zack, will follow through on Pop's tip.

Again, my sincere apologies to all the Lancaster and Bakersfield players, including Zack, for the colossal foul-up.

4 rds of swiss, T4 cut = 6 rds. What is your complaint?? Unless you are claiming 6 rds of swiss. I'd like to see the BR on that one. Name the locations Chad.
