Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Nevada States (...M:tG) Tournament Report

I went to FNM the day before to play test my Red/Green deck since I hadn't played type 2 all year I figured I should get a little practice in and see the decks being played in action. After playing it a few rounds I came to the conclusion that this deck is no were near good enough to make top 8 so I went over a few of my Magic buddies and asked them what I should build and they suggested I go with mono-black control since I have a playset of Thoughseize. I traded for a lot of mono-black stuff and went home to get some sleep for the next day but when I got home and looked at what I had I realized the deck didn't have anywhere near enough creatures so I decided to go with burn so I started searching through my stuff for the best burn cards for my deck and finished the main deck minus the cards I was going to have to get tomorrow. The next morning I got up and worked the sideboard for about a half-hour, tossed my deck in my Zapdos deck box, grabbed my Pokecenter playmat, and headed to the tournament. When I got there I couldn't find pat460 and he had the 2 Incinerates I needed but he showed up in a few minutes and I borrowed the other cards I needed from 2 of my friends now on to round 1 but first the deck list.

Mono Red Burn
Main Deck
4x Mogg Fanatic
4x Martyr of Ashes
4x Keldon Marauders
3x Jaya Ballard, Task Mage
3x Seismic Assault
3x Browbeat
4x Shock
4x Sudden Shock
4x Incinerate
4x Fiery Temper
4x Keldon Megaliths
19x Mountain
Sideboard
2x Pyrohemia
2x Molten Disaster
3x Threaten
3x Incendiary Command
1x Tarfire
4x Guerrilla Tactics

Round 1
Me vs. some guy
Mono Red Burn vs mono red
His deck was really wierd since he was running Shivan Dragons and the Red Akroma. Game 1 I was able to kill him with a few Mogg Fanatics and a few burn spells since he didn't draw more than 2 lands the whole game. Game 2 I don't see much of anything and he sees one of his Shivan Dragons with plenty of lands to pump it. Game 3 it goes back and forth he has a few big walls so I can't get to him with any of my creatures. He drops his Akroma and passes on the end of his turn I burn out his flying blocker and threaten his Akroma to do just enough to kill him.
1-0

Round 2
Me vs. Matt Viviani
Mono Red Burn vs Mono Red Elementals
I've known Viviani for years and I know he's real good but I've gotten a lot better over the years. We're both like mono red eeh. It goes back and forth both games as the mirror match would but I end up taking the match. Good games Matt.
2-0

Round 3
Me vs. Jeremy St. Clair
Mono Red Burn vs. Mono Red (Can I play against anything but mono red!!!)
Game one he gets a great start and takes an early lead me being land flooded doesn't help :-(. Game 2 He gets stuck on 2 lands for a few turns and I Incendiary Command one of his land basically for the game. Game 3 He suspends a Gargadon on turn 1 and gets the Mogg Warmarshall and everything to sack for it. Great games sir.
2-1

Round 4
Me vs. Keenan Richard
Mono Red Burn vs. Red/Green Aggro
I'll just say both games he suspended a Gargadon turn on and then dropped and Mogg Warmarshall and then a Keldon Marauder and then when he got his Gargadon into play he swong with it and his Treetop Village. GG Keenan
2-2

Round 5
Me vs. Jose Torres
Mono Red Burn vs. Red/Black/Blue control.
His deck was really interesting game one he got me with a blaze for like 28 after he removed like 7 counters from 2 storage lands. Games 2 and 3 I'm able to burn him out fast enough.
3-2

Round 6
Me vs. Gary Cerefice (I'm not Ash though so I will not loose to Gary!!!)
Mono Red Burn vs. Black/Green Elves
This is like the worst possible match up for him. Every time he drops a creature I burn it. I win this match quite easily.
4-2

I end up coming in 14th out of 47, not bad for someone who didn't play Type 2 in about a year.

Props
Doing so good at my Comeback to Magic Tournament.
Hanging with my Magic buddies.
Trading a Toughtseize for the Extended Art Doran.
The really good extended art participation card.
One person from Team Rocket making top 8 (go Brian Page).
Seing how many Magic players use Pokemon deck boxes.

Slops
Not making Top 8.
Not having any good places to go get lunch from that are close enough.

Nice job. I would like to see you do that well at pkmn states if you were to come back into competative play.

I haven't touched Type 2 in years. I top 4'd in a Type 1.5 tournament not too long ago with my Ankh Sligh deck, though, but that's about it for Magic accomplishments on my part lately. In general I'm just too lazy/poor to keep up with any format that ever rotates, even Extended.

Magic on a pokemon board, lol. I haven't played in like at least a year, but I know that Browbeat CAN'T be a good play, ever. Just a random observation. A card that gives your OPPONENT options is never good.

Clearly you've never played with Browbeat, then. They can either take 1/4 of their starting life total in damage, or they can allow you to gain +2 in card advantage. Either way, given the colour you're playing, you're at an advantage.

It's not the strongest card available, but it's leaps and bounds better than any of the other "punisher" cards.

You'll never get what you need. If you opponent has a lot of life, theyll GLADLY take the 5 Damage. If you need to finish them off with the last bit of damage, they'll let you draw 3? (I think its 3?).

Yeah, if they're at low life, they let you draw into more burn. You're playing red.

Regardless, I've never seen a red deck where 5 to the dome for 3 mana and one card (the Browbeat itself) is a terrible deal. Well, it's bad in my red deck, but only because it costs 3 mana. No spells in my deck cost more than two, although I do run Cursed Scroll so 3 mana isn't anathema to playing said deck.

EDIT: Wow, I totally made a confusing typo there. Fixed way way way later.

Yeah, it does work pretty well in aggressive burn decks. Taking 5 means 5 less damage to burn off, which is obviously an advantage for the Red deck. Draw 3 means huge card advantage, which is obviously good in any deck. While against most decks, it wouldn't hurt to take 5 early, against MR, it hurts alot.

Sorry you didn't make top 8.
Texas States for MTG wasn't far from me I was thinking about going too.
It's good to see another MTG player here
Jaya Ballard Task Mage = teh coolz :)

The only thing I wish I played differently was Dead/Gone over Shock in the main board. Hopefully I'll do better in the sealed PTQ next week, I'll post another report after it no matter what though.

I've been hearing from other players that the PTQs for Holleywood are going to be Type 2 and it should be some time early next year. You might want to think about giving type 2 another try. I mean and deck like mine (depending upon what good burn stuff comes out next set) would probably cost no more than $40.

EDIT: By the way Wizards website has some of the States Top 8 deck lists.

If I can adapt to how much slower Type 2 burn is than my Sligh deck, I might give it a shot. I'm too used to Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning, not to mention Wasteland.

That said, I'd probably enjoy playing a format where Jaya Ballard is viable. Also I'd probably run Chandra Nalaar just for ****s and giggles, despite that Grim Lavamancer is pretty much better/more efficient than either of them.

...is this actually type 2? I recognize all of these cards from being pre-Mirrodin.

Wow, things must have changed a lot.

Lots and lots of reprints. Tenth Edition brought back a lot of good, old cards, as did the Time Spiral expansion.

Very nice showing at the tournament. To bad on missing top 8 =(, but going 4-2 after such a long time of not playing type 2 is impressive.

Good luck at the next one!

That's the reason why Magic will always own Pokemon, they actually repint good stuff and even when they don't reprint it there's older formats.

The PTQ is less than 24 Hours away. It's driving me nuts.

By the way shame on you pat460 for not posting here. What are you, afraid someone is going to find out you play something better that Pokemon:eek:?

Careful. Saying this kind of thing is apparently a moddable offense.
Well I don't really have time to post my PTQ report today (I got a real pile of garbage to build with so it didn't go well anyway) but if that is the case then I have a few more things to say.

Magic is by far a better game. It has better organized play, prize support, and game play. Oh ya and when sets rotate they don't become worthless. And if they wan't to stop people from saying things like this then that just shows what kind of people the mods here are.

And I changed the deck a little again.

Main Deck
4x Mogg Fanatic
4x Martyr of Ashes
4x Keldon Marauders
3x Jaya Ballard, Task Mage
3x Seismic Assault
3x Browbeat
4x Shock
4x Sudden Shock
4x Incinerate
4x Fiery Temper
4x Keldon Megaliths
19x Mountain
Sideboard
3x Magus of the Moon
2x Molten Disaster
3x Threaten
3x Incendiary Command
4x Guerrilla Tactics

Magus of the Moon just hurts so many decks.
