Booster Box Collation/Distribution

Hey guys,
I'm pretty new to Pokemon, but not new to card games/minis games. I'm thinking of buying a box of the next set in a couple of weeks and I want to know what I can expect from a box as far as commons/uncommons/rares and LV.Xs. Will I get playsets of commons and uncommons? What is the Holo/nonholo rare distribution. How many LV.Xs might I get?
Thanks in advance!

You should expect about 252 commons, 72 uncommons, 36-50 rares, 36 holo (could be rare, could be common or uncommon) and 0-1 Lv. X. That is the usual distribution from a box. There is 1 holo and 1 rare in a pack and 36 packs in a box.

There is guaranteed 1 holo rare, 1 normal rare, 1 reverse holo card (that can be any rarity), a few uncommons, and the rest uncommons in one booster pack.

As for booster boxes and the number of LV X's you can get, that's a different story. In general, there is only 1 GUARANTEED LV X in a sealed booster box since there are only 2 LV X in the Secret Wonders set. Anyone know what happened to the Garchomp LV X???

That doesn't mean that you will still be lucky and pull more than 1 LV X in a box. There have been some "lucky" boxes before where there were 2 - 3 LV X in one sealed box, so keep your fingers crossed!! :thumb:

At our pre-release today, I was lucky enough to pull a Honchcrow LV X out of my first 6 packs. Talk about lucky! However it seems like we only saw swarms of Honchcrow LV X there and nothing else...

Chris: You are not guaranteed a level X in every sealed box nor a holo rare in every pack. Each pack has 10 cards. 1 rare, 1 RH, 3 uncommons and 5 commons. The RH can be any level...rare, unc or common.

There is only 1 guaranteed reare which may be non-holo or holo, you don't get one of both. Also, for exact values, it's 3 uncommos in DP on boosters (2 in Ex series boosters) and 5 commons.

As for Lv.X cards, 1 is average, but I've heard some boxs have none, and some have 2.
Hope I've helped!

Okay, I dont know about the above numbers, but you will most likely on average get the following -

You get a total of 360 cards in a box.

180 of them will be Non-Holo Commons
108 of them will be Non-Holo Uncommons
36 of them will be Reverse Holos - (Can Be Any Of The Holos, Rares, Uncommons, Commons, But Not LV. X's)
24 of them should be Non-Holo Rares
12 of them should be Holos (0, 1, or 2 of these might be a Lv. X)

Hope that helps,
Drew

Actually I did screw up, my apologies everyone. I mis-informed you all earlier by saying you get 2 rares (1 holo for sure, 1 standard) and then 1 reverse holo of any rarity. This is of couse, inaccurate. I meant to say that it is possible to get 1 standard foil rare and then another reverse holo rare in a pack, because the reverse holo in general can be of any rarity. Also, I believe that for every 36 packs in a box, 18 of them have a standard holo rare in them. Those are my calculations based off all the boxes I've gone through. But yes, everyone else nailed the numbers on the head. Luckily you are guaranteed 1 reverse holo in general for every pack!

Actually Keith, you are guaranteed at least 1 LV X (1 is the avg because some boxes have 2 or 3). If there have been issues (never heard of any yet) about 0 LV X's in a box then that would be an error box. Heck, all my boxes where I got my 2 LV X's in them were errors too because you should be getting 1 for sure. I have not heard of a case here in the entire state of Colorado where someone never got a LV X in their box. Perhaps I haven't kept my eyes open on this forum about that issue in general, however the people I've talked to in 5 different leagues have never had this issue. However if they did, they never told me about it so I simply was under the impression that 1 LV X is the set # in every box. The box owners I've talked to here at our local leagues have had at least one box where they had 2 LV X's in their boxes for DP and MT, mine included. Very few other boxes had just 1 lv X. No known cases of 0 Lv X's here. Obviously we simply got lucky...

But still, my original point of buying by the box rather than pack by pack in different stores still stands. It is a personal preference, but at the same time I believe anyone can have a better chance of getting what they want out of a box rather than taking on much higher odds with individual packs in the stores....

Chris: I have personally seen at least 3 of the boxes in my shipment come w/o a X in it. I ran 2 PRs and had generous judge support. It sucked to see the judges at one of my PRs not get an X in the box. With the PRs and side events....I've seen several cases opened. It appears about 1 in 6 boxes (or 1 in a case) goes w/o an X. I dont think i've seen a box yet w/ 2 X's in it. Of course, when packs get scattered in PRs, you cannot be sure about the distribution there.

I would NEVER, EVER recommend buying boxes or even packs really if you have access to singles online (through ebay or trades). It's so random, and yes, you can get a box and not pull a single lv.X. For the same price of the box, you could buy so many sets of cards (4's of this, and that).

Honestly, look for a good list, and write down the cards (trainers usually) that they run, and go after them. Go after some good pokemon, combine with the good trainers, throw in some decent energy, and you'll have a better deck than you would if you bought a box of any set. And it will save you money in the long run because you won't have to buy all the packs and boxes to get the good cards and you can just throw in other pokemon when you want to play another deck.

Good luck with your boxes/packs.

I've now opened two sealed boxes personally, and have yet to pull a lvl X from the new set. Nope, no guarantees here!!

I totally agree with you Prime. We bought a box of DP2 with zero Lvl X. I have bought 15 random blister packs and pulled a Lvl X. We will probably never buy a box again. You are right in saying that it makes more economic sense to buy only the cards you need to build a deck. Its much more economical. I will continue to buy random packs because my child enjoys opening them and on occasion pull something good, but a box is no fun when there is no lvl X.

Now why didn't I just think of recommending that?? I do usually buy a ton of single cards on ebay to complete decks if I can't manage to trade for them or pull them. It really is more cost effective to complete a set or get the cards you need this way. However it's more costly when the set is brand new rather than waiting until the next set comes out when it comes to collecting. But yeah, deck building purposes, absolutely. There are so many buy it now options on single cards for cheap that it isn't even funny. :thumb:

Well, much of a box's value is how much of the stuff you don't need you can immediately sell/trade, which might often times tip the scale or be more beneficial than simply buying singles, but it is ultimately, a gamble.

Yes, you are not garanteed a Lv.X in a box. Me and my friend bought 2 boxes each.(All 4 were from the same case BTW)
I got two Lv.X in one box and one in the other. My friend got one Lv.X in one box and none in the other.
Boxes are relitivly cheap where I am though.($70-$80)

Chris: me too. The 12 foils and one Lv X are not guaranteed: I opened a box which had 11 foils and no level X

The only guarantees are printed on the box (contains 36 x product code XX-XXXXX-XXXXX) and on the individual packs (10 additional game cards)

If you are getting 12 Holos and 1 Lv. X that is a really good box as they are only suppose to be 12 holos in a box. My chart way above is the most accurate way to describe what you will get. Trust me, over the years, I have opened enough boxes to know.
