Why would they ever make it Top 4 at Cities?

After reading the 2 posts about the Oslo CC, I saw that it, and all the other CCs, had a Top 4 cut. In this tournament, there were two 5-1s to not make the cut. Why not just make it a Top 8? If you go 5-1 or 4-1 and don't make a cut, something is very wrong.

It doesn't make a whole bunch of sense to me either, seeing as cities have been T8 in the past. But they've got a reason for doing it, i guess.

Oh well.

Get rid of ratings and make the overall tournament season more fun please =( Top 4 at CC's, so Spring BR's will only be Top 2?

Running top 4 is part of the set guidelines for Cities we have to follow in Norway. Normally top 4 would be OK, but we had a 80 player big City Championship in Oslo on Saturday, that's why some people could go 5-1 and still not make the cut. Not very nice, I know.

It makes no sense to be doing top 8 for the past what, two to three or so years now? I myself never got as to why they changed it. Battle Roads were understandable, but cities aren't, not in the least.

Top cuts have steadily been shrinking

This is nothing new POP has been mandating smaller top cuts for two years now. Last year they cut States from Top 16 to Top 8. This year they have cut Citys from Top 8 to Top 4. Heck three years ago I made the playoffs in a City Championship that had a top 16, and now you can not even have that many for the playoffs in a State Championship.

There has never been an explanation as far as I know as to why they are mandating such small Top cuts at Perimeter events. I wish we could get this changed, but I think cuts will continue to get smaller in the future. I do not think it is unheard of to expect Top 2 at Battle Road, and then Top 4 at States and Top 8 at Regionals, as that seems the be the way things are headed. Instead of doing that I would prefer that they just get rid of the playoffs altogether and just make the leader after swiss play the winner of the event.

How about POP recognizing some areas were getting many more matches/rds in bc they had enough for T8 at CCs? Trying to even out the process so the rankings are a closer indication of the skill level, not the sheer number of games someone gets.

Keith

PS What about staff and venue limitations too. Some places dont want to stay open til 9 - 10 pm for a CC.

Going undefated or X-1 at a big event requires much more skill than it does at a small event, because you will have many more difficult matches (all your matches should be really hard after you've gone 3-0 in the first three rounds of a 6 round Swiss, for example).

And why should areas with many players not have an advantage over areas with smaller player bases? Isn't one of the key points of Trading Card Game Organized Play systems to make it desirable to grow your area's player base because it's benifitial to have many players?

it makes no sense at all because you're gonna have 20+ players in the 15+ =\

Oslo CC actually had 26 in Masters, and Seniors had FORTY. x_x

Eskil, as I'm sure you are aware, the system has to ballance the deserved additional reward for playing in a big event against the phenomena where a single town with a large population of players has an advantage over whole countries: which even if their playerbase were larger would be at an insurmountable disadvantage just because the events are smaller. Its not just a European issue either, it has its parallels in the grumblings that regularly occur from areas in the USA.

Um, States were always maxed to T8, just some States got so many players that they couldnt justify doing a T8 and had to do a T16, most likely based on what the software gave them. You can say max T4, but if you get like 50 players in 1 age group, your gonna have a hard time doing that.

If a TO chooses to ignore POPs regulations and instructions then don't be surprised when POP cancel the premiere status of that event.

I agree. Me doing torterrible in Oslo CC will take me from T20 in rankings to around 150th
Now I am depressep :p

But anyway ON-T: Why do hey even cap tpo cut limits in the first place? Top Cut should be 1/4 of the total players, rounded to the nearest power of 2

There may be a t8 cut, but only t4 get prizes.
like in BRS there was a t4 cut but only t2 got prizes
just a thought

I know, and I agree that this can be a problem. We have the same problem in Norway, where Oslo and its surrounding (close) area has such a ridicously large player base that other smaller cities in Norway have no chance on the ranking list.

Still, I wanted to create some debate. I think this is an issue worth discussing. In fact, I agree with Black_Jirachi that I really find it strange to have top cuts forced smaller than the guidelines/standards for normal Swiss + Top Cut tournaments require. It results (IMO) in a less well-run event.

The guidelines on CCs are very clear, MAX top cut of 4 at CCs. No way around it. IF as TO/PTO goes larger than that, their event may lose its status and no one gets credits/points. A bad result all around.

I will follow the guidelines as provided by PUI. It does not mean I agree 100% all the time with them. It is tough to tell a crowd of 30 or more that the topcut will only be T4. JMHO

But, from a points perspective, the best "points" result usually lands at the x-1 who does not make the cut, for all but one cut players take a loss before the end of the event.

Gosh guys, a whole bunch of complaining is all I've heard so far. I think we all get the point by now: WIN EVERYTHING!!! If you're not good enough to go X-0 at any given tournament, then you don't deserve to win. It's that simple. Besides, luck clearly doesn't play a part in this game, so I think the T4 cuts are justifiable. If matchups were that important then we might have a problem; heck, if the possibility of a good player getting a bad opening hand every once in a while were present, I might just be a bit upset. But that's obviously not the case.

All I have to say about it is... DEAL WITH IT. Just like these guys said in another topic with a similar theme:

I don't really see what's the problem?
It's understood: WIN.

The people with the best records don't have to worry about cuts. You guys are "play to win" all the time but when you don't [and lose/don't have the best record] then you get mad at POP ' and say they're not giving enough chances.

This is coming from somebody who has missed more top cuts by resistance than almost anybody that I know of.

GET OVER IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WIN YOUR GAMES!!!

There is nothing else to it.

Again, I've missed about as many top cuts by resistance as anybody in this game. More than many I know of, in fact. I've gone one loss and missed the top cut before. I don't cry over it. I tell those in the top cut that they played great, and I go off and look for side events to join.

You can't do that? Sry, you're an idiot, and you don't deserve anything more than what you've got.

(please note the sarcasm for the above)

Aside from the fact that many people don't want a tournament lasting until 9 or 10 PM, this honestly makes no sense at all. I apologize for my pessimistic tone with this post, but I'm getting really tired of being disappointed by the Pokemon TCG. It seems that recently there's been an issue with every single step POP has taken. Battle Roads were decent, but there was still a problem with the contents of POP 6 not being disclosed before the tournaments began (not a big deal of course, but only because the cards in POP 6 were rather useless anyway). Now we have the news that City Championships are limited to only a Top 4 cut. So provided that a tournament actually pulls a large crowd, many of those players will be disappointed that their X-1 record didn't earn them a spot in the top cut. I guess tournaments will get over sooner, which means that people can get to bed sooner, but I know I won't be sleeping any easier.

I'll still hold on to the fact that more North American invites are being given out this year (a big thank you to whoever had a hand in that), but there are many things going on that I don't really understand. And this is just another one of them. :nonono:
