I was watching are you smarter than a fifth grader and the question was does a camel's hump hold water?
True or false?
First Grade question...
I learned in 3rd grade that is true beacuse they live in the desert and water might be hard to come by...
Now they say its false and its FAT....
What in the world?

Ya, I thought that the Hump held water as well, I heard it is because the camel can live in the desert for a long period of time due to the water supply it has. That is really weird.
Google time...

Oh ok the water thing was just believed that for a long time because the people that lived in the desert said that...
They didn't know for a fact themselves....

I don't understand. You thought something you learned in school was right?

Okay, I'm confused.

The camle achully dose not "store" watter but "saves" on water by not sweating, when it goes to the bathroom it dung is so dry you can start a fire with it and it rairly pee. The organs them selves "hold"a lot of the water in it's body. It's body uses up so little watter that this alows it to live for a while with out water.

on animal planer they said that their pee is as thick as syrup! thats sick!

and i for one (somewhat) care about camels, theyre better and more usefull than horses at least!

Vegeta ss4 yea I know I have bad gramer/ spelling .... Its something I always strugle with (you should see my first drafts papers :frown:)
Any ways camles can be more useful in hot sandy areas because horses need more water and need to dring more often. Camles last longer and can hold up to....if not more...than hourses and can travle farther in desert terrain.
I personly love all animals so I like both camles and horses

i learned back in the olden days that it is fat.

but yeah. like everyones been posting. camels got some special adaptations to make it live in the desert better. like oval red blood cells. super duper kidneys. big noses to inhale water vapor better. and coats that reflect sunlight. etc.

and on some newspaper ads, i see some of them smoking cigarettes but i dont know how that helps them survive in the desert. seems kinda stupid to do that. :)

I watched that show "Are you Smarter then a 5th Grader" and I dont think any of the stuff asked is actually 1st-3rd grade material, then again I went to school in a very stupid school system to.

Okay I'll answer from what I can remember.. which maximises the chance of my showing my ignorance LOL

I used to think that the hump stored water too. Then like lots I was taught at school I later learnt that it wasn't the whole truth... the water is not stored as liquid water the Camel (evolution?) is much more clever . Since Oxygen is freely available (air) the Camel just stores the Hydrogen bound up as carbohydrate - Fat. I may have once known the process by which the fat is converted back into water but I don't remember anything about that part.

-----------seems like this is wrong too-----------

The Truth is such an ellusive thing! Ignorance is just sooo much easier.
