Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

#4 taken down by Bug! (Grand Prarie, TX)

Cyrus

Iron Chef - Master Emeritus
Well, the couple weeks before this event certainly were interesting. With a little guidance from Steve (Squirtle), I was able to really get into experimenting with Flariados. After spending a while truly discovering what worked for my style (various nuances here or there), I was ready to go into the Grand Prarie, TX CC.

Round 1: VS Jennifer (Medicham ex/Tyraniter ex???)

Yeah, beats me, but very polite lady. Anyways, I hit no energy drops for the first three turns, but when I finally got some, I absolutely dominated this game. (1-0)

Round 2: VS Billy K. (Lunarock)

Oh gosh, I have to play against my older brother round two! Going into this game, I made sure he was totally prepared for the Flariados matchup, and as a result his play was beyond excellent. However, I knew his list, seeing as how I built it (bar his two neat techs). Well anyways, we get off to a very interesting start: I am struggling to get flareons out, while Lunatone starts spanking me around by T2. At last I stabilize, and then it's a war of attrition. Eventually, after a perfectly played game by me (and a near-perfectly played game by Billy), we finally get time called on us...it's his turn, and he rolls REVERSAL: tails! His flips were considerably better than mine, but that one critical tails gave me the chance to umby up his benched solrock FTW. Great game, Byl. You're improving! (2-0)

Round 3: VS ??? (Salamence)

I'm not sure how he really played this, 'cause I killed him quick. Sorry, man. (3-0)

Round 4: VS Rokman (Flariados)

Oh great, the mirror. Well, he T2 70's me, but I t2 70 him right back, and as a result, he's caught in a bad spot the whole game. I try to establish board control, but he tries to break out of it the whole time. His SSU's were not good (0/2, with his third getting discarded by a holon trainer). I win this game by a good margin, but it could have been considerably closer if those two flips changed. GG (4-0)

Round 5: VS Soles (Bandoom)

Long story short, I have a great opportunity to T2 ko his houndour, but...he's going first, and smogs me -_-. Oh well. He Basically dominates, with me getting not much. However, the one moment where I can potentially make a comeback this game (spider trapping a damaged houndoom to 10 HP left), he plays rainbow, kills his own houndoom, and benches me for the win. GG. (j4-1)

Well top cut was interesting...

1st-Soles (Bandoom)
2nd-Me (Flariados)
3rd-??? (Salamence)
4th-Rokman (Flariados)

T4: VS ??? (Salamence)

Game one::: Now this game is considerably closer than our swiss. I once again miss a ton of early energy drops, and as a result he dominates with a Salamence ex d, but fortunately when things look at their worst, I topdeck a grass energy, tear through his Salamence ex d/Latios ex d, and win just fine, 6 prizes to 3..

Game two::: Long story short, I poison/para him T1, and OHKO t2 with ariados. Sorry! (6-1/5-1)

T2: VS Soles (Bandoom)

Game one::: After a couple turns of great plays with a lone Spinarack, I'm able to turn this into an autowin with the Umbreon ex. He's left with no options after a while, and scoops.

Game two::: Long story short, this man cannot get a break. I T1 poison/para his banette ex, and T2 flariados, despite his buffer piece attached. It woulda been much more of a game had he not gotten so unlucky with the poison flip, but Umby was just waiting to get played again...Good games, bruh. (8-1 for the day, 6-1 in matches).

So so far, I'm 4/5 on CC wins, with one more coming up tomorrow! Wish me luck :D

Props:
-Usual props. Great staff, great event, and Birch is THE man of the day!
-Top cuts.
-I've won four different CC's with four different decks. If I win tomorrow, it'll be five with five =)
-Steve Silvestro for helping me restart Bug.dec investigations.

Slops:
-Kinda closed playing area, but that became consideraly less fo a problem after about three rounds.

lol we were actually tied for 17th in NA (an honour to be tied in rating with such a great player at any time =P) before this but you go 6-1 and I go 5-1 (got d0nked out of a good matchup ughh) =/
Guess you win!
gj on 4/5

Haven't had the chance to go to so many CC's yet, but good job. Enjoyed the summaries. Im 3/3 so far, but I think it ends there =(. Too bad Stoney Creek and Sauga couldn't be on different days T.T.

Squirtle: TY, and sorry about the great Pokedrama =(
Higumaotoshi: Haha, we may stay at virtually the same ranking if your people were higher up than mine; other than Evilcacturne666 and Rokman, the people I ran up against were all in the 1600's/one or two low 1700.
Throne0fLegends: Thanks, and I'm honored that your first/second post on Pokegym was this very tourney report :D.
~Blazi-King~: cuz you actually did a legit job =x? Haha, great going. Do we have the pleasure of playing against you today in Lewisville?
Darktwins: TY.
Moza: Yesshhhhh, verrry leet!

well i've seemed to get the best of you when we have played in the past but either way at the end of the day i'm proud to call you my teammate johnny,as i've said b4 you were the best tx player IMO and this is still true today. gj and propz on a job well done bro.

Spaz: considering we've only played in that ONE tournament where you had the 90/10 matchup advantage... lol but yeah thanks for the props.

Lewisville didn't go nearly as well, but here's how I did there...

Round 1: VS Rokman (Flariados)

Similar to our swiss round the day before, only instead of his flips being mediocre/mine being good, mine were awful, and his were...well, just 1/1 on SSU. While his Vaporeon is a bit obnoxious, it isn't nearly as terrible as my lack of drawing into anything with adventurer/topdecks in general. Bad beat. (0-1)

Round 2: VS George (Flygon ex/Feraligatr d)

George C, Blazi-King's brother, has been doing pretty dang well with this deck, and today was no exception, as he put pressure on me from the start with a quick Feraligatr. My setup is gimpy, but at least I get out a T4 flygon ex, and start pounding away. He's never able to recover from there, especially 'cause I get out my lati@s. good game, bruh. (1-1)

Round 3: VS Donovan (Gardevoir ex d)

Well...I saw this thing, and it looked surprisingly similar to the Cardiologist list! Oh well, I knew exactly how to play against this: watch out for which powers get shutoff, and if possible wait to evolve. I got my one and only good start of the day, and kept up to pace with him. His Gardevoir ex d puts pressure, but Flygon ex d just laughed at it. From there on, his setup fell apart. (2-1)

Round 4: VS Jose Eguia (Tyraniter ex/Altaria ex)

The Eguia family is by far one of the most creative in this game, yet I had never played against Jose before ANYWHERE! Well, I started with my second worst hand of the day: latios ex d, windstorm x2, rare candy x2, flygon d, and some other worthless card. Luckily, I topdecked a mentor t1 (going second), and got some setup cards..but unfortunately, I still had no energy, and drew into no energy/draw for the next three turns! Meanwhile, Jose's got a Big Tex doing t3 KO's to me, and I'm struggling to get back in this. At last, after some deck thinning, I FINALLY hit a grass energy to supply to Latios, and then attach a castform so I may Ice Barrier for quite a few turns. This gives me CRITICAL time to get back, but he sends up delta tyranitar to break my anti-ex lock. I respond with a Flygon ex d, which of course is met right back with another attacker. We keep on shooting back and forth until a CRITICAL point in the game where I have just enough to OHKO his Ttar ex due to my two strength charms. With few options and time running out, he keeps shooting at me with various Pokemon, but I simply swarm with the regular Flygon. Time is called, and our decks are almost all gone, but just in the nick of time, he gets an energy drought through all his retreating, and lets a Ttar ex UF stick out there to be ko'd. Very good game, Jose. (3-1)

After the game, we figured out that swift damage should have been reduced, as by the recent ATM ruling. However, I believe I would have won this game on time anyways, due to the Flygon delta I sent up having three metals attached. I forget if he had 0 or 1 darks attached, but he lost two of them on a previous big tex, and at the end of the game he revealed to me the one darkness prized...the same card that would have bought him enough time to deck me out! I'm pretty sure I would have won on time, and even if not then Jose definitely would have lost naturally due to deck out. What a messy game in every way, but it was well-fought by both sides. Unfortunately, neither of us made the cut, as you will read into later...

Well, I figured with all my bad luck burnt out, I was primed for a #5 cc win, fueled on good luck??? Wrong.

Round 5: VS Justin Shaw (Bandoom)

My hand...after plenty, PLENTY, of riffling, piling, etc...is...

1 Holon's Castform
5 energy
1 Windstorm

That of all things against a T2 banette. Whoopdee doo...oh well, lol. We play again for fun, but because my two flygon ex d are prized, and he hits all his er2 flips...yeah. UGH! Nice person though, and he went on to get second (with a very high quality list...although it was made by Mr. Meches, hehe).

Well unless I can go to Oklahoma City (I really want to), this is the end of the road for my CC season, and it's been great! I've scored four CC wins of the six I've been to, and have played five different decks! However, it may not be over yet...here's to hoping I do poorly in my Debate tourney so I can play pokey :thumb: . Haha just kidding!

Hope to see all my Texas/OK buds at prereleased and states, otherwise!
